It doesn't matter whether Penn State linebacker Jesse Luketa is in the weight room, the film room or on the field. The same seven words are always running through his mind. How are you going to be remembered? "It's been ingrained into my head," the projected first-year starter said Thursday during an online news conference with reporters. "It doesn't matter if it's our individual periods or competition periods or team periods, it's the same mindset. It keeps me hungry, so I keep that little chip on my shoulder." For now, Luketa realizes he's best remembered as the replacement to Micah Parsons, the Nittany Lions' former weakside linebacker who's a potential top-10 pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

Luketa doesn't much mind the comparisons - "I'm comfortable with it," he added - because that's not what drives him. Sure, Parsons was a potential Heisman candidate. And, yes, defensive coordinator Brent Pry said last year Parsons was among the nation's best. But Luketa isn't trying to be Micah Parsons; with a smile and a buttoned-up Penn State polo, he said he's simply trying to be "among the greats." He's trying to be remembered long after his playing days. "The only thing I'm concerned about moving forward is how people are going to remember Jesse Luketa," he said. "That's what wakes me up day in and day out." - Centre Times

The Penn State linebacker room isn't short on confidence heading into the 2020 season, and for good reason. The Nittany Lions return arguably the best in the country at the position in junior Micah Parsons and have plenty of talent to fill in around him. Jesse Luketa is one of the players ready to step into a starting role, and he thinks the Nittany Lions can't be matched at linebacker. "We have the opportunity to have the No. 1 linebacker room in the nation," Luketa said on a conference call with the media Tuesday afternoon. "We're talented, we're fast, we're physical, we're smart and we're eager to learn...I'm excited for our guys. I'm excited for the country to see what we have to offer and what we're going to do to opposing offenses." Regardless of who starts next to Parsons, Luketa is confident he and the rest of the linebackers are at the peak of college football. "You see the film," Luketa said. "You see the individuals we have in the room. I see the work we put in day in and day out. Call me crazy. Call me what you want. I know the talent we have, I know how we work, I know how hungry we are. And it's unmatched. It's unparalleled. It's as simple as that." - Centre Times

Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons has generated most of the headlines on defense this offseason - but strength coach Dwight Galt said another young linebacker is gaining ground after "one of the greatest improvements" he's ever seen. Sophomore Jesse Luketa has turned a lot of heads these last 18 months, according to Galt. Parsons used to be "1A" to Luketa's "3C," the strength coach added, but now it's more 1A and 1B.

"Jesse Luketa has done an unbelievable job," Galt said Friday during Penn State's annual Lift for Life event, which raises money to fight rare diseases. "In the 18 months or whatever he's been here - 19 months? - he's had one of the greatest improvements I've seen in an athlete." Galt didn't need to consult his records to rattle off some of Luketa's improved numbers. Some of the gains are so stark it's hard to forget: Luketa came into Happy Valley with a max bench of 245 pounds and, on Tuesday, did 360 pounds. He used to run an official 4.92 in the 40-yard dash; now, he's down to 4.68. And his vertical jump is up to 37 inches. - Centre Times
