 Zakoby McClain, Auburn, Player News

  12/16/21 - OLB Zakoby McClainSr/2022, Auburn, 6-0, 227 (DS#17 OLB) + More +

Zakoby McClain will lace 'em up one more time before he heads to the NFL Draft. The Auburn linebacker on Tuesday accepted an invite to the East-West Shrine Bowl, which will be played Feb. 3 in Las Vegas. McClain led Auburn in tackles each of the last two seasons and has been an emotional leader on the Tigers' defense during that time. He led the nation in tackles as a junior last year, finishing with 113 in 11 games, becoming the first Auburn player to finish a season averaging double-digit tackles per game since Dontarrious Thomas in 2001. He followed it up with 96 tackles this season, including eight for a loss, and six pass breakups. McClain also earned second-team All-SEC honors this year, making him one of three Auburn players to make the all-conference team. - Birmingham News

2021 ALL-SEC SECOND TEAM (COACHES): LB Zakoby McClain, Auburn,...McClain, the nation's leading tackler last season, has led Auburn in tackles 14 times in his career. With 96 tackles this season, he needs four more to become the first Auburn defender since Takeo Spikes in 1996-97 to record back-to-back 100-tackle seasons. The senior from Valdosta, Georgia, has tallied 13 career games with double-digit tackles, including five this season. McClain earned SEC defensive player of the week honors in Auburn's 31-20 win vs. Ole Miss for making 14 tackles and two sacks. - Auburn Football

Auburn's linebacker group entered last season expecting to be among the SEC's best, and despite the preseason opt-out of Chandler Wooten and an early-season injury to team captain K.J. Britt, the linebacker corps did not disappoint. That was largely due to the play of Zakoby McClain and Owen Pappoe - and it's why this group should again be among the league's bet at the position. McClain stepped up in a major way as a junior after making a name for himself in the 2019 Iron Bowl. He slid into the starting spot vacated by Britt and proceeded to lead the SEC and tie for the FBS lead in tackles, with 113. "Ricochet Rabbit," as he's known, somehow didn't earn All-SEC honors last fall - leaving a chip on his shoulder heading into his senior season. - Birmingham News

  01/08/21 - OLB Zakoby McClainSr/2022, Auburn, 6-0, 227 (DS#17 OLB) + More +

The SEC's leading tackler will return to Auburn for his senior season. Linebacker Zakoby McClain, who led Auburn and the SEC with 113 total tackles in 2020, announced on Thursday that he will return to the Plains for "one last ride" rather than declare early for the NFL Draft. McClain is the second draft-eligible Auburn player to announce a decision to return in 2021, joining fellow junior Smoke Monday. McClain's decision to return means Auburn is set to bring back its two leading tacklers and starting linebackers next season. Open Pappoe, a sophomore in 2020, was second on the team and eighth in the SEC with 93 tackles. - Birmingham News

Either McClain or Pappoe have led Auburn in tackles in each of the last seven games, and each one posted three straight games with double-figure tackles, marking the first time since Deshaun Davis in 2018 that an Auburn defender has hit that threshold over a three-game span. McClain last week set a career high with 17 tackles during Auburn's 31-20 loss to Texas A&M, which marked the most in a single game by an Auburn player during the Malzahn era and the most by a Tigers defender since Demetruce McNeal had 18 against Mississippi State in 2012. "It's not a surprise," Pappoe said of McClain. "I think 'Koby is one of the most slept-on linebackers in the SEC. He does it all. Throughout fall camp, we had scrimmages, and he's flashing all the time and making plays. That kind of performance from him doesn't surprise me. I was really happy for him to play like that, on a big stage against a top-five team." - Birmingham News

Auburn may have lost two veteran linebackers, but coach Gus Malzahn is comfortable with that position group. After all, they still have two of the best linebackers in the SEC. "Zakoby (McClain) and Owen (Pappoe), those guys - I've said this - they're two of the best in our league, and they played really well the other night," Malzahn said. McClain and Pappoe had to elevate their game coming into the season because senior Chandler Wooten opted out, but they had to step it up to another level against Arkansas because All-SEC linebacker and team captain K.J. Britt injured his hand and had to have surgery. The two of them responded to the adversity by leading the team in tackles.

While McClain led the team with 13 tackles, Pappoe was close behind with 10. Seven of McClain's tackles were solo, and nine of Pappoe's were solo. McClain also had two quarterback hurries, while Pappoe had one sack. Malzahn decided to give them both defensive helmet stickers for their performance instead of choosing between the two. He said they were both "all over the field...it was good to watch." "We're in great shape, I think, with (McClain) and Owen," Malzahn said. "You'll see both guys continue to improve." Ranking the SEC teams 1 through 14 after three games. Without Wooten and Britt to rotate with them, McClain and Pappoe played almost every single snap against Arkansas with a little bit of help from safety Zion Puckett who played linebacker for a game. - Birmingham News
