Jaylen Waddle's labored trot on and off the field was obvious to everyone in Hard Rock Stadium on Monday night. Also evident was the junior wide receiver's desire to play in a national championship game less than three months after fracturing his ankle. Waddle caught three passes for 34 yards in Alabama's 52-24 win over Ohio State, playing a limited role for an offense that did not need its most explosive playmaker but welcomed his presence on the biggest stage of the season. "I have a lot of respect fo r Jaylen Waddle, his mental toughness and his ability to be able to come back," coach Nick Saban said Tuesday.Waddle had not played since Oct. 24 but returned to practice last week. He went through about a 25-minute pregame warmup before giving co aches the go-ahead that he would play. That put into motion a plan that saw Waddle not start the game but enter late on the first drive of the game. On his first play, Waddle caught a pass over the middle from quarterback Mac Jones and turned downfield f or a 15-yard gain. "We just had a limited plan for him," Saban said. "We really had, like, plays that he could run where he could run in a straight line and didn't have to do a lot of cutting, didn't have to do a lot of route running and changing directi on, doing some of the things he's so good at, which is going in motion, running bubbles, orbits, all that kind of stuff. - Birmingham News

Alabama wide receiver Jaylen Waddle remains a game-time decision for Monday's College Football Playoff National Championship Game, UA coach Nick Saban said Sunday. Defensive back Malachi Moore remains, "very questionable," while defensive lineman LaBryan Ray has returned to practice and has a better chance of playing. Waddle has been the headline of the week from the UA side of things after his return to the practice field on Tuesday from the ankle injury that was thought to end his season. Alabama may have an additional weapon available when it faces Ohio State in the national title game. Star wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, who has been out since suffering a significant ankle injury Oct. 24, is expected to return to practice Tuesday, sources told AL.com. It's too early to tell whether Waddle will be able to play in the national title game but it's at least a possibility, per sources. The outlook for injured Alabama star Jaylen Waddle continues to be very good, enough so that Nick Saban confirmed Thursday night that it's possible the preseason All-American wide receiver could return later in the season. The update from Saban came afte r Waddle got his cast removed earlier in the day, 26 days after he suffered a significant ankle injury vs. Tennessee that was originally labeled as a season-ending injury. "We're very encouraged," Saban said during his weekly radio show. "Everybody think s he's doing really, really well. He's had a great attitude about it and he's going to work hard and he told me that he wants to try to come back and play, but we're certainly not going to let that happen until he's fully 100 percent healthy." Waddle, a potential 2021 early first-round draft pick, had 24 catches for 557 yards and four touchdowns in the Crimson Tide's first four games before getting hurt on the opening kickoff against Tennessee. - Birmingham News

When Tua Tagovailoa suffered a season-ending hip fracture last November, the severity of the injury immediately raised questions about whether he would declare for the NFL draft, how far he might fall in the draft and if how he would be financially prote cted. It does not appear similar questions will follow Jaylen Waddle's fractured ankle that will end his season and, likely, his Alabama career. Nick Saban said Monday that Waddle's surgery was "very, very successful" and his long-term prognosis is "very good." Saban compared the surgery to the one performed on former Alabama running backs Derrick Henry in 2013 and Kenyan Drake in 2014, both of whom returned to continue onto their successful playing careers.Waddle's injury is not likely to cause much change to his draft stock, assuming he leaves Alabama early to enter the 2021 draft. Two high-ranking NFL personnel executives told AL.com this week they do not expect Waddle's placement in the draft to be impacted, barring an unforeseen complicatio n in his recovery. Both considered Waddle to be a first-round pick, with one executive expecting to see him taken within the first 15 or 20 selections. That evaluation has not changed much since the summer, when Waddle was viewed as a player who could ha ve opted out of the 2020 season and still been taken high in the draft. Nick Saban confirmed Monday that wide receiver Jaylen Waddle underwent surgery Saturday night in Birmingham after fracturing his ankle earlier that day on the opening kickoff of a game at Tennessee. Saban called the surgery "very, very successful" and sa id Waddle's long-term prognosis is "very good." Added Saban: "He's been in the hospital since. He's been pretty groggy. He was going to come and see me today, but he just got back and I'm probably gonna talk to him later today or tomorrow." Although Saba n told CBS at halftime of the game that Waddle is out for the season, but said after the game that Waddle would "probably" be out for the season if he needed surgery. On Monday, Saban did not specifically rule out Waddle's return or leave the door open f or him to come back this season. "It's a difficult timetable to know when a guy can come back from something like this," Saban said."That's something that's going to be ongoing. Probably six to eight weeks before he can even start real heavy rehab , then relative to your position, how fast you can come back after that is really, really up in the air." Saban compared the surgery to the one former Alabama running backs Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake underwent before continuing their playing careers. Without Waddle, Alabama's top trio at wide receiver is expected to be DeVonta Smith, John Metchie and Slade Bolden. Alabama coach Nick Saban said junior wide receiver Jaylen Waddle is out for the rest of the season after breaking his right ankle on the opening kickoff Saturday against Tennessee. "It's a shame because the guy's a great player," Saban told CBS at halfti me. "It's exciting for college football to see a guy playing like that. I hate it that he gets hurt on a play like that. You're not supposed to bring the ball out when you're that deep in the end zone, but he's a great player, so you've got to let him us e his judgment." Waddle took the opening kickoff and got out to the Alabama 15 when tackled by Kenneth George Jr. Waddle's right foot got caught between the grass and George's body and turned.Waddle has been one of the nation's top punt returners the past two years and has seldom had the ball kicked his way this year. He had 733 yards on punt returns in his career, ranking sixth in Alabama history. Waddle currently leads all Crimson Tide returners averaging 19.3 yards per punt return in his caree r, nearly six years better than second place. Waddle opened this season with at least 120 yards receiving in each of the first four games and led Alabama with 557 yards on just 25 catches. Jaylen Waddle entered the offseason as the best punt returner in the nation. He was also effective as a wide receiver in 2019 in limited opportunities, taking his 33 catches for an average of 16.97 yards, which ranked fifth in the SEC among qualified rec eivers. All that was left for Waddle to perfect was his blocking. In Steve Sarkisian's offense, wide receiver blocking is much more than a pet project. Just as it was all of last season, Alabama was effective -and at times explosive - on screen passes th at feature wide receivers as lead blockers in the 2020 season opener: UA completed all six of such screens against Missouri for 50 yards, averaging more than 8 yards per play on passes that are designed to be caught behind the line of scrimmage.Al abama's wide receiver corps remains elusive, playing a role in screen success, but more often than not those receivers have plenty of room to work once they make the catch. "I just worked on getting my hands inside and making solid contact with defenders ," Waddle said. "I think that was one area that I really needed to improve on as far as last season." Junior wide receiver Jaylen Waddle knew this was his season to break out. After two seasons of playing behind Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III, he would be the primary threat to pair with DeVonta Smith. He did his best to prepare for a new set of responsi bilities. The early returns were convincing. Waddle exited the game with eight catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns. The seven catches were a career high and the 134 yards were 4 shy of tying his current career high, set in 2018 against Louisiana-Laf ayette. Waddle did not get a chance to return a kick or punt - where he made his biggest impact last year - but one game was enough to show Waddle won't have to wait for kicks and punts to make his presence known. Mac Jones now has two road starts under his belt, one in last year's Iron Bowl as a spot starter and Saturday's outing against Missouri as the established starting quarterback. In both instances, he knew he could lean on Jaylen Waddle. So he did. Waddle was the intended target on the Crimson Tide's first offensive play, an incompletion. The next nine targets produced eight catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns, making him the star performer of UA's 38-19 win over Missouri. "He gets open, that's his j ob and I think he does a great job doing it," Jones said. "We've had a great relationship since he stepped on campus, going back to summer 7-on-7s, getting that chemistry with him, all the late nights at the indoor."As he was last year, Waddle was used in motion at times to create openings for him, but part of his new role as an every-down wide receiver is to be a more naturally occurring part of the offense, one that gets the ball somewhat regularly even when plays are not designed specifically for him. Waddle did that in addition to showing a skill he had not in the past: making plays to receive the ball, as opposed to once he receives it. In the pass-catching portion of Waddle's Alabama career, most of his receptions have been carefully desig ned where Waddle is granted to space to make the catch, and his job to make defenders miss after that. Jaylen Waddle had to catch lightning in a bottle with every touch in 2019. He was a wide receiver behind two first-round draft picks and two Biletnikoff Award semifinalists, making receptions few and far between. He was by far the nation's best returner, but he only got 20 chances to return a punt and five to return a kick. All in all, Waddle averaged 20.8 yards per touch but only got the ball 4.07 times per game. In Waddle's case, playing more equates to playing differently. As Waddle is poised to ste p into a bigger role in Alabama's offense this fall, he had to take on some new responsibilities that come with a more all-encompassing role, a reality he has embraced. "I think he's excited about the challenge and the opportunity of being an every-down player in our offense and not just a specialty player," Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian said.As a wide receiver, Waddle being on the field more often means he's going to be targeted and running routes on fewer of his snaps, leaving h im to block for the run. Waddle said he's been working on hand placement in blocking. There is also the prospect of playing multiple wide receiver positions, given being on the field for more than specialized snaps, and the potential need to do so should COVID-19 quarantines impact depth in the position group. Waddle said the way UA's offense is structured makes it easier for wide receivers to move among wide receiver positions. "I think we don't try to learn a certain position. We try to learn a concep t, so you're not just out there - you don't really know where you're going to be based on the concepts," Waddle said. "You've got to learn every concept. The Louisville Sports Commission today named 50 multi-talented college football players to the 2020 Watch List for the Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse. The Paul Hornung Award, now in its 11th season, is given annually to the most versatil e player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission and football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung. The winner and his family will be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award dinner at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisvill e on March 2021. The 2020 Watch List is comprised of 50 players - 18 seniors, 22 juniors, nine sophomores and one grad transfer who play a total of eight different positions.These players represent 50 universities located in 28 states coast-to-coa st that are part of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. All 10 FBS conferences and one independent school are represented on the Watch List; the SEC leads the conferences with eight players, followed by ACC with seven players and the Pac-12 an d MWC with six players each. The Paul Hornung Award has created an impressive legacy in 10 years.
