Gunner Romney, Brigham Young, Player News

As the weeks passed by and the doctor visits mounted, those closest to Gunner Romney worried the BYU wide receiver's season may be over before it began. Watching her husband lay in a hospital bed with a pain pulsating through his stomach, Sadie Romney knew his injury wasn't routine: a lacerated kidney that would ultimately require two months to heal before he would be cleared to play again. "It has been super sad, super hard," Sadie Romney said last week as she waited for her husband to make his season debut. "... When they kept pushing it back, I thought maybe he would come back next year. He still has the redshirt year. I know he would hate to do that but if it came down to it he would." Romney, a fifth-year senior, returned last Thursday after lacerating his kidney at the start of training camp in August.

For most of the last month, BYU's coaches have said Romney was close to returning and listed him as a "game-time decision." But for a while, the Romneys worried the injury was severe enough that it could have derailed his entire 2022 season. "It was a really serious injury," Gunner said on BYUtv. "It wasn't something we were taking lightly at all...Luckily we have had a lot of medical help and medical opinions on this." The injury itself happened on the second day of training camp. Romney caught a ball and fell to the ground. During the catch, he cradled the ball squarely on his kidney and the blunt force of the fall was absorbed by his stomach. During the play, a defensive back also fell onto him and pushed an added body weight onto the kidney. - Salt Lake Tribune

Gunner Romney hasn't played a full season yet since arriving at BYU. He played eight games last year after having an early season knee injury. He played 10 the year before that. At the NFL level, he knows an injury prone, older player is not desirable. And the second part of the equation is showing explosiveness as an athlete. He's above-average as a deep threat in BYU's offense. Last year, he averaged 17.5 yards per catch. In 2020, he nearly averaged 20 yards per reception. But there are plenty of athletes at the next level who can be down-field options. The separation will be turning smaller plays into first downs. It is something Milne, a similarly fringe NFL player, has done to stick in the NFL.

"I think my biggest strength is obvious," Romney said of his self-evaluation. "But I want to be able to make [more] out of the shorter plays. So catching the 5-yard route and turning that into [something]. Or just being more explosive with my yards after catch and things like that." By his assessment, his explosiveness will be enhanced by staying healthy. He changed his approach this offseason by taking more time when his body is worn down. In previous years, he might have forced himself to lift or practice when his body wasn't feeling well. The injuries he's had were mostly fluke plays, he says, and hard to prevent. In the first game of the season last year, a defender rolled up on his leg and hurt his knee. A similar play happened in 2020. - Salt Lake Tribune

It got to the point last season that all BYU passing game coordinator Fesi Sitake could do was laugh. "I get it when it happens two times a year, but literally every game there were about two catches...some things just aren't meant to be," Sitake joked. "There are things in this life I try and I push and it's just not meant to be and I give up. These guys probably know 'you know what, it's just not meant for me to score touchdowns." BYU wide receiver Gunner Romney was responsible for the second-most receiving yards, but only got across the goal line twice. Chalk it up to bad luck or whatever you'd like - Romney was constantly stopped just short of the end zone.

Now that star receiver Dax Milne has left Provo for the pro ranks, and with a pair of top transfers coming in, what does Romney have to do to become the Cougars' go-to wideout? Sitake said it'll be nothing big. First, Romney will just have to make sure to string together an entire season. "He had a couple little nagging things that kept him out last year, but if he can string together a full season, that production will take care of itself," Sitake said. "He just needs to continue to get a little faster, a little bigger, a little stronger, a little more IQ at his position." Romney sat out two games last season and had limited production in a few other games due to minor injuries. Otherwise, he put up big numbers - except in the form of touchdowns. In the 10 games Romney played and started in, the junior had 767 receiving yards on 39 receptions for an average of 19.7 yards per reception. - Salt Lake Tribune
