Former University of Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins was arrested Sunday in Scottsdale, Arizona, on complaints of excessive speed and reckless driving. According to a release from Scottsdale police, Collins was driving a Mercedes that was observed going 76 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday. He was pulled over, arrested and booked into jail before being released later in the day.

Collins, 22, was selected 16th overall in the NFL draft by the Arizona Cardinals in April after a stellar career for the Golden Hurricane. A Hominy native, he went from under-recruited out of high school to the nation's top defensive player last season. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound linebacker signed his rookie contract with the Cardinals earlier this month, a four-year deal with a team option for a fifth. Collins is expected to be an immediate contributor in the middle of the defense alongside second-year linebacker Isaiah Simmons. - Tulsa World

Before he appeared in a college game, those within the University of Tulsa football program were predicting Zaven Collins would make it to the NFL. Continuing an extraordinary path few others could have anticipated, Collins was taken 16th overall in the NFL draft by the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night, becoming the highest-drafted defensive player in Hurricane history. "(Hearing my name) was so emotional for me and for my mom," Collins said during a Zoom call with media. "That's what we worked for. … It's something that I dreamed of and we accomplished that tonight." Collins, a Hominy native who quarterbacked the Bucks to the Class A championship in 2016, was an under-recruited player whose only Division I offer came from the Hurricane. After redshirting his first year on campus, he became a starter because of injuries and emerged as a freshman All-American. He followed with a 97-tackle campaign as a sophomore before producing one of the best seasons in program history last year, when he was a consensus All-America selection and the nation's top defensive player. In eight games, he totaled four sacks and four interceptions, with two of those returned for touchdowns, in addition to a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a safety. - Tulsa World

Falling behind early is becoming a regular occurrence for Tulsa. So are late-game heroics. Zaven Collins returned an interception 96 yards for a touchdown in the second overtime to give No. 25 Tulsa a 30-24 comeback victory over Tulane on Thursday night. Tulsa (5-1, 5-0 American Athletic Conference) forced overtime when third-string quarterback Brin Davis connected with JuanCarlos Santana for a Hail Mary 37-yard touchdown pass.

Playing its first game as a ranked team since 2008, Tulsa outgained Tulane 522 yards to 302, but turned the ball over three times. The Golden Hurricane trailed 14-0 entering the fourth quarter - the fourth game this season they have overcome a 14-point-or-more deficit to win. Brin entered with 2:09 left in the third quarter after backup Seth Boomer was carted off the field because of a left leg injury. Starter Zach Smith left with a torso injury late in the first quarter. Brin completed 18 of 28 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns. His 18-yard TD run with 9:17 remaining got Tulsa's comeback started. Corey Taylor II, carrying the ball for the first time in four games, gained 132 yards on 19 carries for the Golden Hurricane. Santana added eight receptions for 138 yards and the game-tying score. - AP College Football

Collins combines effort with skill and the results have been exceptional: 182 tackles over the previous two seasons, including 17.5 for lost yardage and 3.5 sacks, six pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, an interception and a forced fumble. "Not only does he have his God-given gifts and abilities and his work ethic is second to none, he is not going to be outworked. And then at the same time he wants knowledge and he knows he needs knowledge," TU defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Joseph Gillespie said. "You start putting the knowledge and the experience with it, I think his level of play will go through the roof to a whole different degree."

Collins was recruited out of Hominy High School, where he starred at quarterback and safety and won a Class A title as a senior. Gillespie has helped mold Collins into an NFL prospect, opting to keep him at linebacker because of his speed and 6-foot-4, 260-pound frame. "Zaven is a tremendous talent," coach Philip Montgomery said. "He's a guy who can cover a lot of ground. He's a guy that can play multiple positions. He can do a lot of different things for us and I think his future is extremely bright." Heading into his third season as a starter, Collins is TU's top returning tackler and the centerpiece for a defense brimming with potential. - Tulsa World
