LOTT IMPACT TROPHY FINALIST: DEVIN LLOYD - LB, UTAH (10-3) SR.,...6-3, 232, 4.75, Chula Vista, CA. Mid-season All-American; Butkus, Bednarik and Walter Camp semi-finalist; Has 22 tackles for losses, 2nd in the country (42 career tackles for losses); 109 total tackles (leads Pac-12), 3 sacks, 3 interceptions; Returning Butkus award finalist; 3x All-Pac 12, 1st team in 2020 and 2021; 2020 Sporting News All-AA; Two-time Lott POW and three-time Pac-12 Player of the Week. "I see exactly what the NFL looks for in linebackers. He-s got the size, the speed, the explosion, the athleticism, the intelligence — everything you see in those elite linebackers in the NFL, Devin possesses them. He plays within the structure and framework of the defense. But we utilize him in a lot of different ways. You saw us bring him off the edge quite a bit so far this season. He-s got great size. He runs like a deer. He-s instinctive, he-s got a long wingspan and you see him tip balls quite often, particularly in pass rush. He-s a playmaker. He-s a guy that when there-s a play to be made, he almost always makes it. He-s an absolute football junkie and student of the game. He watches as much film during the course of a week as anybody we-ve ever had here." - Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham - Lott Impact Trophy

Devin Lloyd returned an interception for a touchdown, Cam Rising threw for another score and No. 14 Utah clinched the first Rose Bowl berth in school history with a 38-10 victory over No. 10 Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game Friday night. This game was a near carbon copy of the one in Salt Lake City two weeks ago when the Utes (10-3, No. 17 CFP) jumped out early and won 38-7. While that game all but ended the playoff hopes for Oregon (10-3, No. 10), the rematch delivered coach Kyle Whittingham and the Utes the Rose Bowl prize they had been seeking since joining the Pac-12 in 2011. It capped an emotional last 12 months for the Utes program that has dealt with the deaths of two players. Utah had lost its first two trips to the conference title game, including two years ago to Oregon, but left little doubt this time.

Rising engineered a TD drive on the opening possession after converting a sneak on fourth down near midfield. Tavon Thomas capped it with a 2-yard run. Lloyd then returned an interception 34 yards for a score later in the first quarter and Utah put the game away by scoring twice in the final 27 seconds of the first half. Rising hit Dalton Kincaid on an 11-yard pass with 27 seconds left. Then Malone Mataele intercepted an ill-advised pass from Anthony Brown to set up Jadon Redding's 50-yard field goal on the final play of the half to make it 23-0. Thomas and T.J. Pledger added TD runs in the second half for the Utes to the delight of the huge contingent of Utah fans among the 56.511 in attendance for the first title game in Las Vegas. - Utah/AP College Football

If the Pac-12 football media day predictions are any indication, Utah will challenge in the Pac-12 South once again in 2021. The Utes were picked to finish second behind USC in the Pac-12 South in the league's preseason media poll released Wednesday morning. Utah also received six first-place votes and three votes to win the Pac-12 championship. It's Oregon, though, who was the overwhelming favorite not only to win the Pac-12 North but the league title as well. The Ducks received 27 votes to win the Pac-12 championship, followed by 10 for USC and the three for Utah. The Utes also landed a league-high five players on the preseason All-Pac-12 first team. Utah's five first-team selections include junior offensive lineman Nick Ford, junior linebacker Devin Lloyd, junior defensive end Mika Tafua, sophomore kicker Jadon Redding and junior return specialist Britain Covey, who also made the second team as a wide receiver. - Deseret News

A lot is expected out of Utah senior linebacker Devin Lloyd this season, as one of the veteran leaders for the Utes' defense. His impact was recognized Thursday, as Lloyd was named a second-team preseason All-American by Walter Camp. Lloyd's experience will be vital for the young Utah defense in 2021 - he has 19 career starts over 33 games, and last year he led the Utes in total tackles (48) and tackles for loss (10), while adding two sacks, a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry during the team's pandemic shortened five-game season. The 6-foot-3, 232-pound Lloyd earned a handful of honors following the 2020 season, highlighted by being named second-team All-American by Sporting News. He also earned Pac-12 all-conference first-team and Phil Steele All-America honorable mention honors, and was a finalist for the Butkus Award, given annually to the nation's top linebacker. - Deseret News

Like some of his teammates, Utah middle linebacker Devin Lloyd faced a major decision after the truncated 2020 campaign ended last December. Should he enter his name in the NFL draft? Or should he come back for one more season? Ultimately, Lloyd chose to return to the Utes. So why did he postpone his shot at the NFL? "More than anything, I want to leave with a championship, with a nice little ring on my finger. Hopefully a couple of rings," said the 6-foot-3, 232-pound junior. "I want to bring everyone along with me, too. I know this team wants to be great. I'm not the only one on this team that wants to be great. "My passion for the game as well - the NFL isn't going anywhere," he continued. "I just want to cement a legacy here at the university and do a lot of great things here. I knew I had an opportunity to leave but it wouldn't have been up to my expectations as far as the draft. I just felt like it was all around the best decision to come back and invest another year." - Deseret News

On Saturday at 5:20 p.m., Devin Lloyd tweeted out a 21-second highlight video from the shortened 2020 football season, and slapped a caption on it that read, "One Last Ride." Lloyd, a University of Utah redshirt junior linebacker and a finalist for last season's Butkus Award, will return to Salt Lake City in 2021 as a redshirt junior. With that, all of the Utes' major offseason business should now be complete.

Lloyd is returning, an announcement that came days after redshirt junior offensive lineman Nick Ford and junior tight end Brant Kuithe both announced they would return. The coaching staff restocked the quarterback room, hitting the NCAA Transfer Portal for Baylor's Charlie Brewer and Ja'Quinden Jackson of Texas. Same with the running back room, which now includes Oklahoma transfer T.J. Pledger and LSU's Chris Curry. The question now begs, will Utah contend for the Pac-12 South title? - Salt Lake Tribune

Devin Lloyd isn't ready to end his college career just yet. Lloyd, a finalist for the Butkus Award and a Sporting News second-team All-American linebacker as a University of Utah redshirt junior in 2020, announced on Sunday evening that he will return to Salt Lake City for the 2021 season. With the NCAA freezing the eligibility clock this past season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lloyd will remain a redshirt junior next season. The 2021 season is expected to be Lloyd's last as a collegian. An All-Pac-12 first-team selection during the Utes' five-game season, Lloyd led the Utes in total tackles (48) and tackles for a loss (10) to go along with two sacks. - Salt Lake Tribune
