 Cade Fortin, Arkansas, Player News

  05/18/22 - QB Cade FortinrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-2, 224 (DS#50 QB) + More +

Scoping SEC QB transfers: Eleven quarterbacks transferred to 10 SEC schools this offseason, with South Carolina's Spencer Rattler the lone guaranteed starter of the entire group. Here is On3.com ratings. No. 10 - Cade Fortin, Arkansas (from USF). A former Texas A&M commit and North Carolina signee, Fortin joined the Razorbacks' program as a preferred walk-on in January. Fortin has transferred once already before, starting the first two games for South Florida in 2021. He averaged just 3.8 yards per attempt with two interceptions in two losses, and while Arkansas' quarterback room is thin, Fortin is unlikely to see action with the Hogs. - On3.com

USF has named Cade Fortin its starting quarterback, the Bulls announced Monday afternoon on Twitter. The news is notable but not a surprise. Fortin, a transfer from North Carolina, left the spring with an edge in the four-person competition and impressed coaches early in preseason practices. "Cade just picked up right where he left off," second-year coach Jeff Scott said after the first week. "He's had an outstanding fall camp." The 6-foot-3, 221-pound Georgia native was a three-star recruit in high school. He appeared in four games for the Tar Heels and was 23-of-65 for 388 yards and a touchdown in 2018. He also rushed 14 times for 76 yards and a TD at North Carolina. He was limited with injuries and coronavirus protocols last year but still played in two games with the Bulls. He finished 4-of-8 passing for 39 yards with 39 rushing yards on four carries. - Tampa Tribune

  08/17/21 - QB Cade FortinrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-2, 224 (DS#50 QB) + More +

USF coach Jeff Scott said his Bulls are "probably closer" to figuring out which of their four viable quarterback options will become this year's starter. Or maybe not. "Just let it play out," Scott said Tuesday after USF's first full padded practice of preseason camp. "I want my wife to be able to come to the game and be able to say, 'That's your best quarterback right there." It needs to be that obvious." A week into preseason camp, a winner is not yet that obvious. But there does seem to be a frontrunner: junior Cade Fortin.

The North Carolina transfer showed promise in his two games last season when he wasn't shut down due to injury or coronavirus protocols. He left spring with a lead in the competition and still seems to be ahead; Scott said the other three passers are "behind" Fortin. "Cade just picked up right where he left off," Scott said. "He's had an outstanding fall camp." Fortin attributes some of that to his familiarity. This is the first time since his junior year of high school that he had the same system and coaching staff for two straight years. "It's definitely helped me develop a lot of confidence," Fortin said. - Tampa Tribune

  03/29/21 - QB Cade FortinrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-2, 224 (DS#50 QB) + More +

Coach Jeff Scott repeatedly has praised Fortin's development this spring, and it showed Saturday. Fortin finished 14-of-23 for 224 yards and two touchdowns in the first half for the Green team. Beyond the numbers, he had one of the day's best throws (a 50-yarder to Xavier Weaver on the first play from scrimmage) and one of the best runs (a 23-yard scramble). USF's other experienced option, Miami transfer Jarren Williams, was shakier as the White team's starter. He finished 9-of-19 for 98 yards and a touchdown plus what would have been a fumble in a normal game. Scott doesn't see an advantage to naming a starter this early, so expect the competition to continue into the fall. But Fortin looks like the Bull to beat heading into the offseason. - Tampa Tribune

  03/05/21 - QB Cade FortinrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-2, 224 (DS#50 QB) + More +

The tidbit that Jeff Scott tossed at reporters Tuesday bore a saline aftertaste, like a grain of salt. It may behoove USF fans to digest it as such: Through four spring practices, Cade Fortin appears to be leading the latest Bulls quarterback derby. "Cade Fortin is probably the MVP so far in my opinion through four days," Scott said. That assessment could change by week's end, when the Bulls will have two more workouts, including a closed scrimmage on Saturday. But so far, the 6-foot-3, 222-pound North Carolina transfer - whose 2020 season was disrupted by quarantine and injury - has been "phenomenal," according to his coach. "The way that he has improved and just sped up his processing, delivering the ball, it's like a completely different player than where he was last year at maybe the beginning of fall camp just getting here," Scott added. "And I think again, that's having a year to digest the playbook and what we're asking him to do." - Tampa Tribune

  10/03/20 - QB Cade FortinrSr/2024, Arkansas, 6-2, 224 (DS#50 QB) + More +

Roughly 48 hours before USF's scheduled kickoff at No. 15 Cincinnati, transfer quarterback Cade Fortin still is on track to make his Bulls debut against the Bearcats, Coach Jeff Scott said Thursday. But he won't be the only Bull behind center against the Bearcats. "I plan to play multiple quarterbacks," Scott told reporters Thursday, "and hopefully feel more confident coming out of this game than maybe where we are right now on having one quarterback we feel like can go lead us on offense to be as explosive as I feel like we have the potential to be." Fortin, a North Carolina transfer who signed with USF in December, was listed as "unavailable" for the Bulls' first two contests. A specific reason hasn't been given, but COVID-19 (positive test, contact tracing, etc.) is the presumed culprit. But Scott indicated earlier this week he expected Fortin to be available, adding Thursday the 6-foot-3 sophomore "has gotten a lot of reps this week in practice." - Tampa Tribune
