One of three key transfer portal additions in the offseason, 6-5/215 redshirt junior quarterback Jack Plummer finds himself in a strong position in his battle to take over as starting QB for departed 4-year starter Chase Garbers at Cal. The fifth-year QB from Gilbert, Arizona earned honorable mention All-USA Arizona honors as a 2017 senior, completing 195-of-335 passes (58.2%) for 2861 yards and 35 touchdowns with seven interceptions, while also rushing for 404 yards and eight additional touchdowns. "Ou t of high school, my top two were Purdue and South Carolina," said Plummer. "The Purdue connection started from my defensive coordinator in high school who played at Louisville with the Brohm's (former Louisville and current head coach and OC Jeff and Br ian Brohm). He slid them my film and they were recruiting me the hardest. I thought it was a good fit playing for a head coach and offensive coordinator who both played quarterback in the NFL." Plummer started 13 games in his time at Purdue, completing 3 19-of-492 passes (64.8%) for 3405 yards with 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for a 136.35 quarterback rating. - Bearinsider.com

Purdue quarterback Jack Plummer threw four touchdown passes in the first half, three to wide receiver David Bell, as the Boilermakers rolled over winless UConn 49-0 Saturday afternoon at Pratt & Whitney Stadium. After punting on its first possession, Pur due (2-0) scored touchdowns on each of its next five to take a 35-0 lead at halftime. "While things weren't as great as we wanted on the first series or two, we found a way to regroup and played well from there," Purdue coach Jeff Brohm said. The Boilerm akers, a 34-point favorite by most sports books, scored two more touchdowns with their first two drives in the second half with many second-stringers in the lineup. Plummer completed 16 of his 20 passes, racking up 245 yards and four touchdowns. Bell cau ght six of the passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns. Both were replaced to start the second half.In their first game under interim coach Lou Spanos, who took over Monday following Randy Edsall's abrupt retirement, the Huskies advanced inside Purdue's 20-yard line only once in the game. "We feel awful. Our team feels awful that we're not executing. We're just disappointed for our fans," Spanos said. "But our players, they're teammates to each other. We're getting closer as a team. Now, we've got to make sure it transfers on game day. We do good stuff in practice, but we have to do better on game day." UConn (0-3) has lost 28 of its last 29 games against FBS competition. "It was great to see our guys come through and do what we needed to do i n this game," Brohm said. "When you face a team that's going through some adversity, you have to make sure your guys come ready to play and understand that on any given day anybody can win. That's college football." It was UConn's most lopsided shutout l oss since a 49-0 loss to New Hampshire Nov. 7, 1931. - Purdue/AP College Football

Purdue coach Jeff Brohm promised to make changes heading into this season. On Saturday, it paid dividends. Now, he's hoping it keeps working. Jack Plummer threw for 313 yards and two late touchdowns while the Boilermakers' revamped defense made sure it h eld up for a 30-21 victory over Oregon State to cap the 500th game played at Ross-Ade Stadium. Purdue has won 291 games since its home venue opened in 1924 and this one came in prime time and in front of the largest home crowd in 644 days - thanks largel y to the Boilermakers defense. "I think they played really hard, tough, had a couple huge fourth-down stops," Brohm said. "We did what we had to do." It was good enough to snap a four-game losing streak and bring some relief to a program that hasn't play ed in a bowl game since 2018. The difference: Two fourth-down stops in the second half, which Purdue (1-0) converted into 10 points and Brohm's willingness to throw it deep late in the game. Plummer finished 29 of 41, sealing the victory with a 50-yard T D pass to a wide open Payne Durham with 2:09 left. - Purdue/AP College Football

As Jeff Brohm looks to push Purdue's program forward after back-to-back losing seasons, he'll begin this important year with a starting quarterback who can add mobility while leaning on his experience. Jack Plummer features both and has earned the starti ng job for the Sept. 4 season-opener when the Boilermakers host Oregon State at Ross-Ade Stadium. Plummer won a close competition with Aidan O'Connell, last year's opening-day starter, and Austin Burton, a transfer from UCLA prior to last season but has yet to play. Just the threat of a running quarterback should help expand Brohm's offense to a different level. With struggles in the running game the last two seasons, the Boilermakers need a threat on the ground, even if it comes from the quarterback po sition. The mobility of Plummer, along with Burton, has always been appealing to Brohm. The option of having a dual-threat at quarterback opens up Brohm's playbook and gives the offense an opportunity to keep defenses off-balanced and produce more big plays. Plummer will be asked to use his legs more in key situations - third down plays and in the red zone. "We think the quarterback position has to have that threat with the ball in his hands and the defense has to honor him and respect him," Brohm said. "It's something we always have to have in the game plan. "We feel like it has to be an option and we have to utilize it. Taking care of the football when that's being done and protecting yourself when you do run and get yards and get positive play s and get down when you have to. If the down and distance require you to go get the first down, that's what you have to do." - Journal and Courier

Plummer will start his second straight game at quarterback Saturday when the Scarlet Knights make their first visit to Ross-Ade Stadium. Plummer replaced the injured Aidan O'Connell during the week. O'Connell started the first three games. "Jack came in and did a very good job," Brohm said. "Where Aidan is at with everything, we'll see how this week goes but I do feel like Jack competed very hard, did a very good job. Showed a lot of poise and composure (and) for three and a half or three quarters, he p layed at a high level." Plummer completed 35 of 42 passes for 376 yards and three touchdowns. Plummer and O'Connell have completed better than 80% of their passes in two different games this season. - Journal and Courier

The "Cradle of Quarterbacks" is having a hard time picking one this season. Purdue is a school that has produced the likes of Drew Brees, Gary Danielson, Len Dawson, Jim Everett and Bob Griese - among many - but is looking for its next leader. Apparently a starter has been tabbed, but Brohm will not announce who it is until Saturday. Jack Plummer, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound sophomore, would seem to be the front-runner after completing 144 of 241 passes for 1,603 yards and 11 TDs last fall before getting inju red. But Austin Burton and Aidan O'Connell also are in the mix. Plummer played against Iowa last fall, completing 30 of 50 passes for 327 yards and two TDs. - The Gazette

Three quarterbacks - Plummer, O'Connell and Burton - have game experience with Plummer seeing the most action in 2019 until a broken ankle ended his season. O'Connell started the last three games, leading the Boilermakers to a win at Northwestern but the former walk-on showed a lot of poise and promise. Burton arrives from UCLA where he started one game and appeared in a total of six. The position has plenty of competition, which is positive, and it gives Brohm more than one choice to consider as his st arter. Don't expect a decision on a starter until the week of the opener at the earliest. "He did some good things for us last year. He's got some athleticism, he's got some moxie to him, he can make some plays with his feet. Getting consistency in the p assing game and his accuracy and decision-making support, he's got to continue to work on that." - Journal and Courier

Purdue quarterback Jack Plummer is expected to miss the rest of this season with a broken right ankle. The opening-day starter, Elijah Sindelar, is unlikely to return because of a broken left collarbone. The Boilermakers are asking former walk-on, Aidan O'Connell, to keep their long-shot bowl hopes alive. Coach Jeff Brohm fully believes O'Connell can do the job. "He's a guy I think can execute the offense. I think he'll stand there and try to make the throw and sit in that pocket and do the best he can, " Brohm said Monday. "We've got to play to his strengths and help him get into rhythm and get completions. I think extending the play and getting yards with his feet is not his strength." Clearly, the Boilermakers (3-6, 2-4 Big Ten) face an uphill battle . They must win their final three games to become bowl-eligible, a stretch run that begins Saturday with what appears to be a winnable game at reeling Northwestern (1-7, 0-6). Then, after a second bye week, the Boilermakers visit No. 16 Wisconsin before closing out the season at home against surging rival Indiana. - AP College Football

Jack Plummer threw for 420 yards and three touchdowns and Cory Trice returned an interception for a score to break open the game just before halftime, helping Purdue roll past Maryland 40-14. The Boilermakers (2-4, 1-2 Big Ten) snapped a three-game losin g streak with their most lopsided win since upsetting No. 2 Ohio State last October. Maryland (3-3, 1-2) still hasn't won consecutive conference road games since 2014 and never had a chance after Trice picked off Tyrrell Pigrome and scored on a 37-yard i nterception return with 18 seconds left in the first half to make it 30-14.Plummer was 33 of 41, hooking up with David Bell nine times for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Brycen Hopkins caught 10 passes for 140 yards, both career bests. And all that came after coach Jeff Brohm inserted three new starters on the offensive line — Mark Stickford at left guard, Sam Garvin at center and Eric Miller at right tackle. It couldn't have worked out better. King Doerue was effective on the ground and Plummer took advantage of his protection right from the start. Purdue scored on its first two possessions as Plummer found Bell for a 23-yard TD pass and Doerue scored on a 4-yard touchdown run to make it 13-0. - Purdue/AP College Football
