Racey McMath, LSU, Player News
|
LSU wide receiver Racey McMath has played in his final collegiate game and will leave for the NFL draft, a source confirmed with The Advocate. McMath, a 6-foot-3, 224-pound senior, already has professional representation and has accepted an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl in Mobile on Jan. 30. McMath, who started in six games this year, entered the 2020 season with high expectations. He'd made a name for himself as a star gunner on LSU's special teams in years past, and his season was cut short by an injury he suffered against Arkansas. - Baton Rouge Advocate

McMath missed the Texas A&M game due to an injury he suffered against Arkansas. Orgeron did not specify why Carter will n ot be available. The 6-foot, 244-pound hybrid player was not available against Texas A&M. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Starting LSU wide receiver Racey McMath is not expected to play against Texas A&M after suffering an injury in the Tigers' 27-24 win at Arkansas on Saturday. The 6-foot-3, 224-pound senior pulled up hobbling after running a deep route in the third quarte r. After laying down on the sideline and holding his left leg, McMath hopped on one leg as athletic trainers helped him to the training table. He did not return in the game. "Racey's out," LSU coach Ed Orgeron told reporters Monday. "He's very doubtful f or the game."McMath, whom Orgeron spoke highly of during the offseason, has started in all six of LSU's games this season, and he recorded his first career touchdown reception against Arkansas. The double-move in man coverage McMath used made him a wide open target for the 30-yard touchdown pass from TJ Finley, which gave LSU a 10-7 lead with 13:54 left in the second quarter. It was indicative of the kind of receiver Orgeron thought McMath could be, and, at least for this week, the offensive coac hing staff will have to dig into a deep, yet young, group of receivers to replace McMath. - Baton Rouge Advocate

A targeting penalty in the fourth quarter helped LSU continue its go-ahead drive, scoring with 3:59 left to dispatch Arkansas, 27-24, on Saturday. TJ Finley found Jaray Jenkins for a 13-yard touchdown to put LSU (3-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) ahead b y three points. It was the capper to a 10-play, 67-yard drive on which Arkansas safety Jalen Catalon was flagged for a 15-yard targeting penalty and ejected.LSU sealed the game when Jay Ward got his hands on an AJ Reed 44-yard field goal attempt w ith 1:24 left, the ball falling well short of the crossbar. Finley threw for 271 yards and two scores, the other in the second quarter on a 30-yard pass to Racey McMath. Arkansas (3-5, 3-5) had taken its first lead late in the third quarter when Feleipe Franks led a 5-play, 95-yard drive. Reed's 22-yard field goal early in the fourth put Arkansas ahead 24-20 ahead of Jenkins' final touchdown. Franks finished 17 of 26 for 339 yards with an interception and a touchdown. He ran for 43 yards and a touchdown , as well. Four of Franks' completions went for more than 50 yards. - LSU/AP College Football

Chase's departure is the most recent blow in a difficult preseason camp for the Tigers. Since practice began Aug. 17, two starters have opted out, needed to monitor Hurricanes Marco and Laura, and, on Wednesday, all but four LSU offensive linemen were qu arantined after they either tested positive for COVID-19 or were determined to have high-risk exposure. Meanwhile, while many conferences have postponed fall sports, six Football Bowl Subdivision leagues are moving forward with football this fall, includ ing the SEC, which will play a 10-game, league only schedule. LSU is scheduled to open the 10-game season Sept. 26 at home against Mississippi State. Now, projected starting quarterback Myles Brennan has lost his most dangerous target. Terrace Mars hall, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound junior, becomes the team's top returning receiver. Marshall caught 46 passes for 671 yards and 13 touchdowns in 12 games, missing three because of a foot injury. LSU's offense has regularly used at least three wide receivers a t a time, since the Tigers switched to a spread attack last season. LSU coach Ed Orgeron has often spoke of senior Racey McMath as the group's third option, and it's likely that the 6-foot-3, 224-pound New Orleans native will step into a bigger role. McM ath caught 17 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns last season, which includes a 60-yard reception. Orgeron has praised his speed and ability to make plays. - Baton Rouge Advocate
