Trey Smith has no problem explaining his situation, no matter how many times he has to detail his history of blood clots. The Tennessee guard wants to make sure no NFL coach or general manager has any unanswered questions about his availability to play before the upcoming draft. "I'll explain it a million times if I have to," Smith said. "Because it's just something unique. It's something that's different. At the end of the day, I want to play football at a high level. I want to go to the NFL, so I have no issue whatsoever helping people understand what I went through and making them comfortable with it as well."

The 6-foot-5, 321-pound Smith played 42 games at Tennessee even while dealing with his condition. Blood clots in his lungs kept him out of spring practice in 2018, but blood thinners allowed him to eventually return. He missed the final five games that season when doctors worried Smith had a recurrence of blood clots before extended testing made them confident that hadn't happened. Doctors and specialists put together a plan and medications that allowed him to start 12 of 13 games in 2019 at left guard, and he earned first-time All-Southeastern Conference honors. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

For his career, Smith started 41 of the 42 games he played in, including 22 consecutive starts. He logged over 2,500 offensive snaps in his four years and allowed only one sack in his final two seasons. - Tennessee Football

Tennessee offensive guard Trey Smith says he will return to school for his senior year after making a successful comeback from a career-threatening medical issue to earn first-team, all-Southeastern Conference honors this past season. Smith played all 13 games for Tennessee and made 12 starts at left guard. Smith, who says he's on track to graduate in May, indicated the NFL draft advisory board had recommended that he return to school. "I think there are major things that I can increase and do better at, be a lot more consistent with my game," Smith said at a Thursday news conference. "I want to attack those areas and do better."

Blood clots were found in Smith's lungs in February 2018, causing him to miss that year's spring practice. He went on blood thinners and was eventually cleared but missed the final five games of that season after school officials said doctors again had found blood clots in his lungs. Tennessee team physician Chris Klenck clarified that Thursday by saying that Smith had displayed “symptoms that were somewhat worrisome for a recurrent blood clot episode” but that additional tests have made them confident the issue wasn't a recurrence after all. - AP College Football

The Jackson, Tenn., native made way for one of the best passing performances in recent history as Jarrett Guarantano recorded 415 passing yards against Missouri's sixth-ranked pass defense on Nov. 23 to help the Vols gain bowl eligibility. Smith is also a Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year semifinalist and an Orange Bowl Courage Award nominee. The junior was a first-team All-SEC selection by the Associated Press earlier this week, as well. This marks the second season that Smith has earned All-SEC recognition after garnering All-Freshman team and second team honors in 2017. - Tennessee Football

Tennessee got a major boost on each side of the line of scrimmage just in time for the start of the season. Volunteers coach Jeremy Pruitt announced Wednesday that offensive lineman Trey Smith has gained medical clearance to play this year and that defensive lineman Aubrey Solomon has received an NCAA waiver enabling the Michigan transfer to play for his new team immediately. Both players should be available Saturday when Tennessee hosts Georgia State. Their additions strengthen the offensive and defensive lines, two of Tennessee's greatest concerns heading into the season. Smith is arguably the best overall player on Tennessee's roster, but his career was in jeopardy after blood clots were discovered in his lungs. - AP College Football
