Grant Delpit is tired of questions about his tackling. They've become inevitable. They've been lobbed at the LSU safety since he returned from a high ankle sprain in the middle of the 2019 season. It was no surprise that it was the fourth question Delpit fielded after the Cleveland Browns selected him with the No. 44 pick in the second round of the NFL draft. "I'm so tired of hearing that I can't tackle," Delpit said Friday night. "I might tackle you for asking that question." Delpit laughed. But the frustration is real. NFL executives, coaches and scouts all had similar questions.

They were most certainly the reason a former unanimous All-American, the 2019 Thorpe Award winner for nation's top defensive back, fell to the second round. Delpit was the third safety selected in the draft. He followed Alabama's Xavier McKinney to the New York Giants (No. 36) and Lenoir-Rhyne's Kyle Dugger to the New England Patriots (No. 37). "It was a humbling experience," Delpit said. "It was." In Cleveland, Delpit will be in familiar company. He's joining former LSU wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, plus former teammates cornerback Greedy Williams and linebacker Jacob Phillips, who the Browns selected No. 97 overall in the third round. Delpit said Cleveland is turning into the "LSU of the North," where he and Williams will make up "the best" secondary in the NFL. "Headline it," Delpit said. "All caps." - Baton Rouge Advocate

Lingering questions remain for NFL executives and scouts on LSU safety Grant Delpit. Last month in Indianapolis at the NFL Combine, the former Tiger, Houston native and former four-star high school prospect addressed much of the criticism that he felt has come his way from those that'll be making the decision of when to draft him in two weeks when the league conducts the NFL Draft virtually April 23-25, saying he garnered "a lot of hate and slander from the media and the experts." From the scout's perspective observing and grading Delpit's Pro Day in Baton Rouge Wednesday afternoon, the LSU safety - who has been projected as high as a late first-round draft choice - pieced together a solid performance.

Delpit didn't go through the on-field portion of the Combine, as he was coming off playing the majority of the 2019 season with a high ankle sprain but posted a 4.39 40-yard dash during his Pro Day, a number that would've been the second-fastest time behind Louisiana Tech's L'Jarius Sneed. And while the times and the measurements, at 6-2, 213, stack up to a top-round grade, the scout still wonders if Delpit's junior season with the Tigers lacked the appropriate level of motivation. "He was faster than I thought he was. He had three years at LSU. As a scout though, you ask yourself if he played better as a sophomore," the scout told the USA TODAY Network. "A lot of times when kids declare, they don't play as hard when you see on tape sometime that year. But before, he would make the plays. - The News-Star

Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor and LSU defensive back Grant Delpit headline the 2019 AFCA FBS Coaches' All-America Teams announced today by the American Football Coaches Association. The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best - the coaches themselves.

A two-time AFCA All-American, Taylor picked up his second straight Doak Walker Award in 2019 after rushing for 1,909 yards and 21 touchdowns. His rushing yards and rushing touchdowns are second in the nation behind fellow All-American Chuba Hubbard of Oklahoma State. If you include his receiving statistics, Taylor had 2,118 yards from scrimmage and 26 total touchdowns. The 2019 Thorpe Award winner, Delpit earned his second straight AFCA All-America honor by recording 56 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions and eight passes defended from his safety position. He is a leader on an LSU defense that allowed only 37 points over the final three games of the season. - American Football Coaches Association

Grant Delpit's numbers are down this season compared to the big-play bonanza he produced during his 2018 All-America campaign -- and that makes perfect sense to fellow LSU safety Jacoby Stevens. "He's a unanimous All-American, so a lot of people aren't going to test him," Stevens said. "Stats don't tell the whole game. He can shut down a whole side of the field," Stevens added, noting that opposing teams apparently weren't fooled by Delpit's jersey switch this year from No. 9 to No. 7. "You can see it on film sometimes. Quarterbacks kind of look and they see 7 and they just go the other way. He can't get a stat on that. He's a good ball player. He hasn't changed."

While a big year statistically would help Delpit's already considerable NFL draft credentials next spring, he can appreciate that having a big year individually can still be unsatisfying if team goals aren't met. This season, Delpit has one interception, one fumble recovery, no sacks, 1 + tackles for loss and four passes defended through seven games. But LSU is unbeaten, ranked second in the Top 25 poll and very much in the CFP conversation. "I'm pretty tough on myself to make a lot of plays. But I kind of understand you can't make all the plays, all the tackles and all the interceptions," Delpit said. "Just as long as I'm doing my job, as long as we're playing great as a defense, it doesn't matter who makes the play or anything like that - just as long as we win." LSU coach Ed Orgeron calls Delpit "very unselfish." - AP College Football

Joining him on the list are three other returning 2018 FWAA second-team All-Americans in Virginia cornerback Bryce Hall, Michigan State defensive end Kenny Willekes, and Stanford cornerback Paulson Adebo. Alabama leads the team count with four representatives – linebackers Anfernee Jennings and Dylan Moses, end Raekwon Davis and cornerback Trevon Diggs. This list includes 46 of the nation's best defensive backs, representing 10 conferences and 1 Independent. The preseason watch list is selected by a screening committee who compiles a list of 30-50 players. This list is not final and players who have outstanding seasons are added as the season progresses. The award recipient is selected by the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award National Selection Committee, which boasts members of the NCFAA, an Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in-house award committee, former Paycom Jim Thorpe Award recipients, and sportswriters and college football journalists throughout the country. - Paycom Jim Thorpe Award

Grant Delpit arrived at Southeastern Conference media days with a day-old haircut, a blue suit and an LSU pin on his lapel. LSU's All-American safety says he's building his brand, and at least for now, it'll mirror the business professional look he presented when he represented LSU for the first time at the annual event in Hoover, Alabama. Just what is Delpit's brand? The player himself isn't certain. Lloyd Cushenberry, LSU's starting center, said Delpit "obviously has the look," gesturing over at Delpit across the interview room inside the Hyatt Regency Birmingham-Wynfrey Hotel.

"He's the pretty boy," Cushenberry said. "That's his brand." Starting quarterback Joe Burrow added his thought: "Really, really good football player." "He's going to make a lot of money playing football," Burrow said. Delpit is a key to LSU's rise back into national contention. Ed Orgeron called him "the best player in the country," during his opening remarks at the podium Monday. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Ed Orgeron has seen plenty of talented defensive backs in his coaching career, from Hall of Fame safety Troy Polamalu during his stint as defensive line coach at Southern Cal, to his recent years at LSU with first-round picks like safety Jamal Adams and cornerback Tre'Davious White. As far as a collective group, Orgeron said the defensive backs on LSU's 2019 football team may top all the ones he's seen in his 35 years of coaching. "This may be one of the best secondaries I've ever been around," Orgeron said in an interview on 104.5 ESPN's "Off the Bench" Thursday morning.

LSU lost cornerback Greedy Williams, a finalist for the Thorpe Award in 2018, to the NFL draft; but out of the five listed defensive back positions, LSU returns four defensive backs that started in at least four games, including unanimous All-American safety Grant Delpit, who will wear the team's coveted No. 7 jersey this season. Kristian Fulton, a 6-foot, 192-pound senior corner, may have departed for the NFL had he not suffered a foot injury that required season-ending surgery - and a permanent screw in his left foot - in a Week 10 win at Arkansas. - Baton Rouge Advocate

It's looking like three of the four starters should be First rounders in the future with two of them top 10's. Loaded. All of them should be in the news pretty heavy most the season.
