The Football Writers Association of America, in conjunction with the Charlotte Touchdown Club, released its preseason watch list for the 2020 Bronko Nagurski Trophy presented by LendingTree today, selecting 98 defensive standouts from 66 schools in all 10 Division I FBS conferences plus independents on a roster that includes five returning players from last season's FWAA All-America team and one from 2018. Two of the nation's returning sack leaders, Miami defensive end Gregory Rousseau and Oregon State linebacker Hamilcar Rashed Jr., headline the list from among the six returning FWAA All-America selections: LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., who tied for fifth in the nation with six interceptions last season, Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons, Pitt defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman and Stanford cornerback Paulson Adebo, who was on the second team in 2018. - The Football Writers Association of America

For the second offseason in a row, head coach Manny Diaz spent his winter and spring reshaping the Miami Hurricanes. He changed coaches to overhaul schemes and brought in transfers to plug roster holes. He reignited some excitement in the program for at least some segment of the fan base. Count Ray Lewis among those feeling good about Miami's direction. The former Hurricane, who is on the ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame, thinks Miami might be on the verge of a breakthrough. "I'm ready to see that. I really am," Lewis said Monday. "I am really optimistic that everything can change." "It's the swagger through the execution of togetherness," Lewis said. "I'm telling you: We were so dominant here because of what we did together and how we communicated, so to start to see that come back to the U is what I'm waiting on."

One addition he is particularly confident about is Miami's new chief of staff. In February, the Hurricanes announced Ed Reed would be joining Miami in a new role. Reed, who played with Lewis on the Baltimore Ravens after a legendary career of his own for the Hurricanes, will assist Miami and Diaz in a variety of capacities. Lewis is just excited to have his friend's experience once again become a formal part of the program he loves. "There's two things you can guarantee he brings: Experience and probably the best safety to ever play the game, right?" Lewis said. "To know that Ed comes back, the kids gain so much, but they have to really be willing to speak to him because you've got to be willing to listen to those lessons and a lot of those lessons take a long time but Ed - he's wise way beyond his years, man, so I think he brings a lot of experience and a lot of knowledge." - Miami Herald

On Monday, Hurricanes defensive coordinator Blake Baker said Rousseau, who had a spectacular 2019 with 15.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles-for-loss among humongous nationally-heralded stats, said Rousseau can improve even more. "Greg is such a humble and hard-working kid, [and] as good as the year he's had last year, there's so much he can get better at and some things we've shown him on film where he really needs to get better. He takes hard coaching. He's a guy that is a perfect role model for our young guys. Statistically and obviously throughout the media he is getting so much attention but he's still the same humble, hard working kid that he was on the first day he walked on to campus. "...Then you put in the mix with Quincy Roche, who has elite ability to turn the corner and really flatten out the pass rush." - Miami Herald

Two years ago, Mark Richt was coaching the Miami Hurricanes and Greg Rousseau was an incoming freshman for UM that was looking to make his mark in college. It would've been hard to imagine then that, in the not-too-distant future, Richt would be interviewing Rousseau on Instagram Live for something called ACC Network, for which Richt is now a studio analyst, while everyone is staying at home during a coronavirus outbreak. But Miami's star defensive end, who was second to only Ohio State's Chase Young with 15½ sacks last season as a redshirt freshman, joined his first college coach for an interview on Sunday afternoon. He updated Richt on the Hurricanes since he retired from coaching after the 2018 season, leading Manny Diaz to get the head role.

"We're going to do big things this year. I definitely believe it," said Rousseau. "[Diaz] is just one of those coaches that everybody just gravitates toward and rallies around. He's a great leader." On what the Hurricanes have built over the offseason, Rousseau said, "Accountability and trust. Just gaining the trust for one another, holding everyone accountable for the little things like not missing weigh-ins or not being late for anything, go to class, doing everything right. And we know that if we get all the little things right, we're going to be real big-time at the end." - Sun Sentinel

Ed Reed is going back to his roots and rejoining the Miami Hurricanes. The Pro Football Hall of Famer has been hired as the new chief of staff for the Hurricanes' football program, a deal that was announced Thursday and will be finalized when the school completes a standard background check. Reed will be tasked with helping Miami coach Manny Diaz “in all aspects of the football program, including strategic planning, quality control, operations, player evaluation and player development,” the university said in a statement. Reed's duties will also include team building, student-athlete mentorship and as much recruiting as is allowed under NCAA rules.

"We are thrilled to welcome Ed back to Coral Gables," Diaz said. "He is not only one of the most decorated players in Miami football history but also a devoted Cane who cares deeply about this program. All of our players, coaches and staff will be fortunate to tap into his experience, knowledge and passion on a regular basis." Reed was a five-time All-Pro safety, a member of the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team, the 2004 Defensive Player of the Year and made nine Pro Bowls. He had 64 career interceptions, led the league in that stat three times and scored 13 non-offense touchdowns in his career with the Baltimore Ravens. - AP College Football
