Alabama running back Najee Harris won't play in Saturday's Reese's Senior Bowl, executive director Jim Nagy told AL.com on Thursday. Harris, a first-team All-American in 2020, has been dealing with an ankle injury since early in the Crimson Tide's national championship game victory over Ohio State on Jan. 11. He practiced with the Senior Bowl's National team both Tuesday and Wednesday in Mobile, but missed practice Thursday while undergoing treatment on his ankle and is "too banged up" to play on Saturday, Nagy said. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Harris received widespread praise from Nagy and other observers for showing up in Mobile at all and participating in as much of the week's activities as he did. - Birmingham News

Najee Harris just did a Najee Harris thing when he hurdled Notre Dame's cornerback Nick McCloud -- leaving a socially distant stadium in slack-jawed disbelief. Almost everyone was stunned. Almost. "That's what he do on the regular," Alabama's DeVonta Smith practically said with a shrug after the game. "That's just something that we see normally." The 53-yard run set up Alabama's second touchdown in a 31-14 win over Notre Dame. It didn't end with seven points since Harris was chased down short of the goal line but it was his longest run of the season. Smith is right. Harris has been hurdling players since high school, first showing it in an Alabama jersey at his first A-Day in 2017.

"For a big guy, it's pretty amazing that he can do that," said Nick Saban, who added he'd still rather Harris not do the hurdling. "He's kind of got a great feel when a guy is going to try to cut him, which a lot of guys, smaller DBs, all try to cut tackle, bigger backs. When he sees that head go down, man, he'll go over top of them in a heartbeat. It's been very effective for him." - Birmingham News

Najee Harris scored five touchdowns and No. 1 Alabama advanced to the College Football Playoff with a perfect record, holding off No. 11 Florida in a 52-46 shootout for the Southeastern Conference championship Saturday night. The Crimson Tide (11-0, No. 1 CFP) got its toughest test in a season of blowouts, but Harris' record-setting performance will send coach Nick Saban to the playoff in search of his seventh national title with one of his best teams yet.

After falling behind 35-17 by halftime, Florida (8-3, No. 7 CFP) made a game of it with a pair of third-quarter scores. And the Gators fought to the bitter end, adding two more TDS in the fourth period before finally running out of time. Harris tacked on the last of his touchdowns with a 1-yard lunge in which he was initially ruled down just short of the goal line. After a video review, the officials saw that Harris' right arm, the ball firmly in his grasp, came down on the white stripe. - AP College Football

DeVonta Smith returned a punt 84 yards for a touchdown as No. 1 Alabama scored 28 points in a span of 11 minutes in the first half and rolled past Arkansas 52-3 on Saturday. After the teams traded field goals, Smith started the Crimson Tide (10-0, CFP No. 1) barrage. Najee Harris scored consecutive touchdowns just 14 seconds apart and a final plunge from 1 yard by Brian Robinson Jr. had Alabama in cruising toward the Southeastern Conference championship game next week against No. 6 Florida. It was an otherwise quiet day for Smith, with three catches for 22 yards, but the receiver bolstered his surging case for Heisman Trophy consideration on one play. Crimson Tide defenders racked up eight sacks, the fifth of which resulted in a fumble by Arkansas quarterback Feliepe Franks which was recovered by DJ Dale at the Razorbacks 4. Harris scored on the next play. Alabama allowed just 188 yards and kept Arkansas (3-7) from registering a first down during a streak of seven straight possessions from the first quarter to the third. - Alabama/AP College Football

His play has been overshadowed at times by a Heisman Trophy favorite and his top receiver, but Alabama's Najee Harris is nonetheless enjoying one of the best seasons for a running back in school history. Harris has amassed 1,038 rushing yards through nine games, which projects to 1,499 yards over a 13-game season. Alabama will reach the 13-game mark if it makes the College Football Playoff national championship game. If the pace holds, Harris' yardage total would be the fourth-most in program history behind Derrick Henry's 2,219 yards in 2015, Trent Richardson's 1,679 yards in 2011, and Mark Ingram's 1,658 yards in 2009.

Both Henry and Ingram won the Heisman Trophy in those respective seasons, while Richardson was a finalist. Richardson, though, reached his mark in 13 games, while Ingram had 14 games and Henry had 15. Harris will be limited to a maximum of 13 games this season, but had he played in 14, his current pace would project him to 1,615 yards. For a 15-game season, that would rise to 1,730 yards -- or second-best in school history behind the SEC record Henry set in 2015. - Birmingham News

Najee Harris may not have scored, but in running for 119 yards, he ran for more than three of the four teams Mississippi State faced prior to Saturday. DeVonta Smith's 203 receiving yards was his highest mark over his last nine games; it was also more than MSU gained as a team. Alabama became the Harris and Smith show in its 41-0 thrashing of the Bulldogs on Saturday. The two carried the load on 38 of UA's 73 plays, a number that could have been higher if not for three possessions taken almost entirely by backup players trying to run out the final minutes. "It seemed like every time he was getting the ball he was running for 10 yards and running it across the field," quarterback Mac Jones said of Harris. Five of Harris' 21 carries (23.8%) went for 10 yards or more, an increase from the season to date with 17 such carries on 103 attempts (16.5%). Harris also added six catches for 36 yards, second on the team in both categories to Smith. - Montgomery Advertiser

Alabama running back Najee Harris has a rushing touchdown in 12 straight games; the only SEC players to have longer streaks in the last 15 years are Tim Tebow and Derrick Henry, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Harris scored his third touchdown of the game late in the third quarter against Tennessee to give Alabama a 42-10 lead; it was his 34th career rushing touchdown at UA. It elevates him to a tie for sixth in school history and increases his likelihood of joining Henry and Mark Ingram with the record, if not breaking it. Harris was boosted by five touchdowns against Ole Miss, a performance that jumped him from outside the top 10 to tied for eighth with Eddie Lacy. - Montgomery Advertiser

Alabama's win over Georgia was the most-watched college football game of the 2020 season to date and the most-watched program on Saturday on any network, according to a release from CBS Sports. CBS said 9.611 million people watched the Crimson Tide beat Georgia 41-24. It was a 3% increase from what CBS called a comparable event, Notre Dame's game at Georgia last year. The game also earned the highest-rated non-NFL sporting event since the return to live sports in May, earning a 5.3/13 HH rating share. - Montgomery Advertiser

Braxton Weidman called last week "life changing." That type of comment from an 8-year-old boy may not seem all that unusual, but, coming from Weidman, it might be the most profound thing you read all week. The Birmingham native was diagnosed with a stage 4 brain tumor last month, so Najee Harris' five-TD and 206-yard rushing performance against Ole Miss meant more than just another Alabama win. ESPN's "College GameDay" shared the emotional story of the Weidman family from the time of the diagnosis in September and how the Alabama Crimson Tide rallied around the 8-year-old boy.

In three weeks, Weidman had two brain surgeries and the part of the right temporal lobe removed. He will soon start radiation. "Brain surgery is a lot for just an 8-year-old," Weidman told ESPN. "Ain't no kid should go through that." That's where Alabama coach Nick Saban and running back Najee Harris comes in. Weidman's favorite Alabama player is Harris, and both reached out when they heard his story. "I feel like me talking to Braxton made more of my day, my whole week," Harris said. "It's motivating me more going into the game." Weidman asked Saban if he was going to run Harris, and he even had some advice for his favorite player. "You do you and most of the time when you do you, you got it," Weidman said. - Birmingham News

Alabama coach Nick Saban will be back on the sideline against Georgia after all. The Southeastern Conference cleared Saban on Saturday to coach in the game after he tested negative for COVID-19 the past three days. The move came hours ahead of Saturday night's game between the second-ranked Crimson Tide and No. 3 Bulldogs. Saban had initially tested positive on Wednesday, along with athletic director Greg Byrne. Team physician Jimmy Robinson said Saban was tested the next three mornings, and the initial result was deemed a false positive. - AP College Football

There was a lot of discussion of the Najee Harris fumble near the goal line. It was one of those true borderline calls that could've gone either way. Forward progress has so much gray area and can work both ways when an RB gets an extra push or burst near the goal line. At least to me, this was a moment that either judgment call would have been right. Harris' school-record five rushing TDs in Oxford pushed him to the national lead with 10 rushing touchdowns. The next three on the list have played four games to Harris' three. Brian Robinson also ran the ball with a purpose, netting 76 yards on 10 carries while getting the bulk of the looks on the drive that tied it at 14. - Birmingham News

Najee Harris ran for 206 yards and five touchdowns and No. 2 Alabama beat Mississippi and former Crimson Tide assistant Lane Kiffin 63-48 on Saturday night in the highest-scoring Southeastern Conference regulation game ever. Matt Corral passed for 365 yards for Ole Miss (1-2) and the Rebels put up 647 yards on the Tide. The teams combined for an SEC-record 1,370 yards. Alabama and Ole Miss traded touchdowns for much of the night, but with the Tide (3-0) leading 49-42 the Rebels misfired in Alabama territory and had to settle for a field goal. That was as good as a stop in this game. Receiver DeVonta Smith went 14 yards for a touchdown run to make it 56-45 with 3:16 left.   Harris moved into 13th place on Alabama's all-time rushing list in Saturday's 38-19 win over Missouri, passing Eddie Lacy. At 2,475 career rushing yards, Harris is within striking distance of several Tide greats, although he would need another 1,117 yards during this shortened season to pass Derrick Henry for most in school history. Harris, though, has other motivations this season. "I didn't think about that," he said about making Alabama history as a rusher. "I didn't even know I was on track to do that until I got tagged in something after the game. It ain't really a goal. It's not really my personal goal. "My personal goal is to become more of a spokesman person. Because I suck at that with my teammates. I'm not really the type of guy to be in front of people and, like, talk. I'm not really that type of guy. I like talking to people 1-on-1 more. I like being that type of guy. I try [to] be a better teammate right now, really. It's not really about numbers." Harris' role as one of the spokespeople for the #WeWantToPlay movement this summer ultimately proved successful, as each of the Power 5 conferences will be on the field at some point this fall amid the COVID-19 pandemic. - Birmingham News

Alabama running back Najee Harris sat down with a college football legend this week for one of the more candid conversations about his game. Appearing with Reggie Bush as part of FOX's college football coverage, the senior from the San Francisco Bay Area spoke freely about perceptions and some of his bigger plays. Harris was eager to talk about the way his 6-foot-2, 230-pound size is perceived. "Me being a big back, the assumption is OK, he's big so he's stiff, maybe," Harris said. "This is a typical stereotype. He's stiff. He can't make people miss that much. He's not fast enough so me using that, me training to work on all these things or me just hearing that, I train for all those things. So I am in the position in a route or one-on-one coverage...that's a perfect opportunity to show people, yes, I am a big back, but I can do everything that you in your days could do."

Bush, once a Heisman Trophy winner and national champion at USC, agreed with Harris before moving on to one of the Alabama back's signature play. The hurdling touchdown last season at South Carolina was one of the highlight moments of the full college football season a year ago. It came on fourth down and Tua Tagovailoa spotted Harris coming out of the backfield for a touchdown that included at least three broken tackles. "That team had a really good defense and there wasn't much happening in the run game so that's the perfect time to show I can be more of a threat," Harris said. "I was actually excited we went for it on fourth down because Saban was like, he was kinda iffy like 'I don't know if we should go for it.' So they showed me I had a burst route, so I'm like 'Whaaaat? This is the perfect thing." - Birmingham News

Reserved by nature, Alabama running back Najee Harris took a step outside his comfort zone earlier this week when he became one of the leading social-media voices in college football promoting the #WeWantToPlay movement for the upcoming season. He explained his reasoning in a videoconference with local reporters Friday, the first time that the school has held player news conferences since before the Citrus Bowl in January. "I am a pretty closed-in guy, but it's just so much, like, uncertainty going around," he said. "Now I'm not in a position to be quiet. I have to speak up for others who can't speak."

Harris made his plea for college football to be played this fall, in part, because of concerns about how missing the upcoming season would affect the NFL futures of him and other players. "Us athletes want to play to create value for ourselves," he said Friday. "We're kind of iffy about the season, [but] age and time still moves on. We can't take that back. We probably could run back the season but we can't take back age and time. "For a running back, age plays such a factor in the next step, I guess if you want to go to the NFL and whatnot. They look at age so much nowadays...I came back [for a senior season] and I'm already 22. Then if I come back another season and I'll be 23, they can probably use that as something against me. It probably won't but it's just another thing to say about it." - Birmingham News

The high ankle sprain sidelining Alabama quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Tua Tagovailoa has put more responsibility on Najee Harris and the top-ranked Crimson Tide's rushing attack. Harris responded last week by rushing for 105 yards and two touchdowns and also catching four passes for 48 yards against Tennessee. Harris has rushed for over 100 yards in three of his last four games and could have another big performance Saturday when Tagovailoa sits out Alabama's game with Arkansas. - AP College Football

Najee Harris has been a presence in Alabama's backfield since he arrived as one of the nation's top recruits. He just hasn't been the leading man. Harris had to wait his turn behind Damien Harris and eventual first-round NFL draft pick Josh Jacobs the past two seasons before becoming the Crimson Tide's primary tailback. He'll carry that role into this season, when the second-ranked Tide opens against Duke in Atlanta on Aug. 31. "As a running back, anywhere in the country, you always want to get in the game and show people what you want to do," Harris said. "Sometimes, you just have to be patient and wait for your opportunity. It's really just settling down and just waiting for your opportunity to show people what you can do."

Alabama fans and those who watched the past two national championship games already have an idea what Harris can do — even beyond his occasional hurdling of defenders. He was also rated the nation's No. 2 prospect out of Antioch High School in California in the 247Sports composite rankings. Harris has run for 1,153 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons while averaging 6.5 yards per carry. - AP College Football
