Kellen Mond became the first Texas A&M quarterback taken in the draft since Johnny Manziel in 2014 when the Minnesota Vikings drafted him in the third round with the 66th overall pick Friday. Mond said the Vikings were one of his top teams based on the relationship he developed with Viking offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, son of former A&M quarterback Gary Kubiak. "I kind of had word that they really liked my game...kind of how I approached the game mentally and physically," Mond said. "I definitely knew that was an opportunity for me to go. At that point, it was just playing the waiting game. It's a phenomenal opportunity for me, and I'm super excited right now." Mond was the seventh quarterback selected in this year's draft and the third from the Southeastern Conference behind Alabama's Mac Jones and Florida's Kyle Trask. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Texas A&M's Kellen Mond was the Senior Bowl Most Valuable Player but two fellow Southeastern Conference Western Division products made the decisive big play. Arkansas' Feleipe Franks threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Mississippi tight end Kenny Yeboah in the fourth quarter to help seal the National team's 27- 24 victory over the American team Saturday. Franks, a graduate transfer from Florida, set up the all-SEC West scoring connection with a 29-yard completion to Louisville's Dez Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick had six catches for 90 yards in the showcase game for senior and graduate NFL prospects, earning offensive player of the game honors. Mond was the MVP with a huge third quarter when he passed for 141 of his 173 yards and a pair of touchdowns after a slow start. - AP College Football

Texas A&M finished fourth in the final Associated Press Top 25 college football poll for its highest finish since the 1939 team won the national championship. Alabama finished atop the AP poll for the 11th time followed by Ohio State, Clemson and A&M. The Aggies (9-1), who finished the season with an eight-game winning streak, finally passed Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish (10-2) had been fourth in the final College Football Playoff rankings, but was beaten by Alabama 31-14 in the semifinals. The Aggies capped their season with a 41-27 victory over North Carolina in the Orange Bowl. A&M was 75 points behind Clemson (10-2) and 24 points ahead of Notre Dame. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Texas A&M record-setting senior quarterback Kellen Mond and right offensive guard Jared Hocker both declared for the NFL draft on Thursday rather than return for another season. Mond went 31-13 as a starter, making him the second-winningest quarterback in school history behind Corey Pullig, who went 33-6-1 from 1992-95. Mond holds several school career passing records, including yards (9,661), touchdowns (71), completions (801), and attempts (1,358). He was a touchdown shy of setting the school record for most touchdowns responsible for, tying Heisman Trophy-winner Johnny Manziel with 93. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Devon Achane had two late touchdown runs, including a 76-yarder with 3:44 left that put Texas A&M ahead to stay, and the fifth-ranked Aggies beat No. 14 North Carolina 41-27 in the Orange Bowl on Saturday night to cap a winless bowl season for the Atlantic Coast Conference. Kellen Mond passed for 232 yards and ran for a score for the Aggies (9-1), who were in the Orange Bowl for the first time since 1944. Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher improved to 3-0 in Orange Bowls, winning two previous ones at Florida State.

Achane's go-ahead score came on a play where he darted left, nearly tripped over one of his own blockers, broke a tackle and then got loose down the sideline. The Aggies got a fourth-down stop on the ensuing possession, and Achane sealed the win on a 1-yard run with 1:34 left. Sam Howell passed for 234 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Josh Downs, for the Tar Heels (8-4). North Carolina was without leading rushers Javonte Williams and Michael Carter, leading receiver Dyami Brown and top tackler Chazz Surratt — all of whom opted out of the bowl game. - AP College Football

Kellen Mond threw for 281 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 59 yards and a score Saturday, allowing No. 5 Texas A&M to close its case for a spot in the College Football Playoff with a 34-13 victory over Tennessee. Isaiah Spiller ran for 89 yards and a touchdown, and Ainias Smith scored once rushing and once receiving. Mond completed 26 of 32 passes as the Aggies (8-1, No. 5 CFP) finished their regular season and hoped for an upset or two within the CFP's top four. Tennessee (3-7) has lost seven of its last eight games, ramping up speculation about Jeremy Pruitt's future as Vols coach.

Harrison Bailey and J.T. Shrout combined to throw for 189 yards and two touchdowns for the Vols. The Aggies had trouble getting separation in the second half. Up 24-13 at halftime, the Aggies flirted with pulling away in the third quarter, but a red zone interception ended the threat. It wasn't until the 9:02 mark of the fourth quarter that Texas A&M got some breathing room. Mond engineered an 88-yard drive, with a key play of a 28-yard pass to Jalen Wydermeyer, that ended with a 1-yard run by Smith for a 31-13 lead. - AP College Football

  12/09/20 - QB Kellen MondSr/2021, Texas AM, 6-3, 211 (DS#8 QB) + More +

Saturday's stat line for Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond wasn't flashy compared to many of his previous performances - 18-of-23 passing for 196 yards and two touchdowns. But each completion and each yard added up to Mond's only win over Auburn in four years of trying as his composure and poised helped the fifth-ranked Aggies beat the Tigers 31-20 at Jordan-Hare Stadium. "Just kind of looking back at my evolution and my growth since my freshman year has been big time," Mond said.

Mond's first hack at Auburn in 2017 ended with him getting benched in favor of the season's initial starter, Nick Starkel. Mond began the game 5-for-11 passing for 16 yards and got shown the bench midway through the second quarter for Starkel, who had recovered from an ankle injury sustained in the Aggies' season opening loss to UCLA. When Jimbo Fisher took over as head coach, he solved the Aggies' quarterback controversy by backing Mond, but it didn't change Mond's fortunes against Auburn. Over the Aggies' next two seasons, Mond completed 47 of 81 passes (58%) for 555 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in two games against Auburn, both losses. Saturday was different. With a 78.2% passing clip, Mond had his second-best performance in terms of accuracy in his career. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

2020 DAVEY O'BRIEN AWARD SEMIFINALIST: Kellen Mond, Texas A&M, Sr.,...Mond, who is slated to graduate from Texas A&M this week, has completely re-written the Aggies' record book for passing and total offense over the past four seasons, and he has played a big role in Texas A&M's 7-1 record and No. 5 ranking in the College Football Playoff Rankings. He also ranks No. 2 on Texas A&M's winningest QBs list with 29 victories as a starter. Mond, a senior from San Antonio, Texas, has completed 146-of-239 pass attempts for 1,769 yards with an impressive 18-to-2 touchdown-to-interceptions ratio in 2020. Mond averages 246.0 total yards per game while leading one of the Southeastern Conference's most balanced offenses. - Texas A&M Football

Kellen Mond passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third and No. 5 Texas A&M scored 17 points in the fourth quarter of a come-from-behind 31-20 victory over Auburn on Saturday. The Aggies (7-1) dominated the final quarter to win their sixth straight and remain in College Football Playoff contention. The Tigers (5-4), who have gone 0-3 against teams ranked in the top five at the time, led 20-14 entering the fourth. Mond rebounded from his worst game of the season against LSU with a strong performance. He completed 18 of 23 for 196 yards, highlighted by two TDs to Jalen Wydermyer, and ran for 60 yards.

Seth Small iced the game with a 32-yard field goal with just over a minute remaining after an earlier miss had helped Auburn remain within a score. Isaiah Spiller had his fifth 100-yard game of the current winning streak, gaining 120 on 20 carries. Devon Achane also ran for 99 yards on just nine carries. Wydermyer caught eight passes for 89 yards. The Aggies took a 21-20 lead early in the fourth quarter when Auburn linebacker Zakoby McClain tipped the ball into the arms of tight end Wydermyer for a touchdown - instead of what could have been a game-changing interception. - Texas A&M/AP College Football

Kellen Mond threw four touchdown passes to become Texas A&M's career leader, Isaiah Spiller ran for 131 yards and the No. 7 Aggies routed South Carolina 48-3 on Saturday night. Mond moved past Jerrod Jefferson with the 68th touchdown pass of his career, a 52-yarder to Devon Achane in the third quarter with the game long decided. Mond also ran for a score to help Texas A&M improve to 5-1 - all in the Southeastern Conference - for its best start since opening 6-0 in 2016. The Aggies are 7-0 against the Gamecocks.

Mond and Spiller helped the Aggies open a 21-0 halftime lead and cruise to their fourth consecutive victory since a loss at Alabama last month. Spiller had two short pickups for first downs - one on a fourth-and-1 with Texas A&M in chip-shot field goal range - before Mond flipped a 4-yard TD pass to Ainias Smith. Mond found tight end Jalen Wydermeyer for two first-half scores. Wydermyer was left all alone and walked into the end zone on a 15-yard scoring grab. Right before half, Mond hit Wydermyer on a crossing route near the goal line to go up three scores. South Carolina (2-4), coming off an off week, had no answer. - AP College Football

Mond was 21 of 26 passing for 260 yards and three touchdowns, and his team piled up 182 yards rushing against the Razorbacks (2-3). "It is a good feeling and I think that is the goal for the offense, not to turn the ball over," Mond said. "Arkansas did a really good job in past games of turning the ball over, but I think we used the film and are really just able to trust our eyes and find holes in the zone and make plays when they played man. "The receivers did a really good job tonight."

Mond became Texas A&M's all-time yardage leader during his game. His 10,015 yards surpassed Johnny Manziel's previous mark of 9,989 yards, which was accomplished in just two seasons. "It's a tremendous feeling and I have worked so hard each and every year and continued to grind," Mond said. "I've understood through the years that I have had a lot of growth to make, but I think that is part of everyone's growth, being able to look yourself in the mirror and continue to grow. "I have had so many phenomenal coaches and players that I have played with, so a lot of that thanks goes to those people." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Kellen Mond threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns as eighth-ranked Texas A&M built a big lead and held on for a 42-31 victory over Arkansas on Saturday night, extending its winning streak over the Razorbacks to nine games. Jalen Wydermyer had a career-high 92 yards receiving with two touchdowns. Ainias Smith ran for a touchdown and caught a TD pass in the first half to help A&M win its third straight since losing to No. 2 Alabama. Mond threw TD passes of 35, 6 and 15 yards. The senior added 32 yards rushing to give him 10,015 yards of total offense in his career, passing 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel (9,989), who played just two seasons, for the most in school history.   While Feleipe Franks will be the fourth starting quarterback for the University of Arkansas against Texas A&M in four years, Kellen Mond has been a constant for the Aggies. Mond - a senior who is Texas A&M's leader in career pass completions (693), attempts (1,191) and yards (8,363) - will make his fourth consecutive start against the Razorbacks (2-2) for the No. 8 Aggies (3-1) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Kyle Field. "Mond's been there since 1922," Arkansas Coach Sam Pittman said. "Is the guy ever going to graduate and get out of there? He's been there forever, and what a really good player he is." Mond's first of 38 career starts came against Arkansas in 2017. Thrust into the lineup as a true freshman because of an injury to Nick Starkel - who later transferred to Arkansas, then San Jose State - Mond helped the Aggies beat the Razorbacks 50-43 in overtime.

Mond completed 14 of 27 passes for 218 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a 10-yarder to Christian Kirk for a score on the first possession of overtime to put Texas A&M ahead. The Aggies held on to win when Armani Watts intercepted an Austin Allen pass. Mond also rushed 10 times for 109 yards in the 2017 matchup. "I definitely think it was a breakout game for me," Mond said on a video call Monday. "Having that opportunity to go to overtime and then throwing a big-time, game-winning pass to Christian Kirk was huge. "It's something I remember very vividly. It definitely was one of the big-time plays I've had in my career." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Last week Mond passed Johnson's career completion mark of 650. After Saturday, Mond has completed 680 career passes. Mond completed 25 of 35 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns Saturday. His passer rating of 180.8 is the second highest of his career, bested only by his 202.4 performance against Mississippi State last season in a 23-17 win. "My heart hurts for my [Florida Gators] but credit to [Kellen Mond] for a great game," former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow tweeted. "Worked so hard for this moment in the offseason." Mond now looks to the career record for touchdown passes. He sits eight behind Johnson's record of 67.

After Saturday's game, Mond was presented with the game ball, which he said he will keep forever. However, it is after a career has come to a close that players can reflect on such accomplishments, A&M head coach Fisher said, a philosophy which Mond shares. "That's awesome," Fisher said of the record. "You sit back and look at records when you retire and you're done and you're proud of them. You achieve them as you go. Just like in a game, you don't worry about winning the game - you worry about the process of each play. What you accumulate in between you look at when it's all said and done, and that's what he's doing right now. That doesn't even phase him. "I'm very proud of him. He's making a lot of strides as a player, as a quarterback and as a leader in so many different ways. Still a lot of ball and a lot of growth we can still have." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Isaiah Spiller rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 21 Texas A&M beat fourth-ranked Florida 41-38 on Seth Small's 26-yard field goal as time expired Saturday. Spiller helped get the Aggies get into position for Small's decisive kick, giving Jimbo Fisher his first win over a top-five team since taking over as Texas A&M coach. Kellen Mond threw a 51-yard pass to Caleb Chapman for a tying TD with about 4½ minutes to go. The Gators were driving when Buddy Johnson forced a fumble by Malik Davis, and it was recovered by DeMarvin Leal to set up the game-ending field goal.

Mond passed for 338 yards and three touchdowns to help the Aggies (2-1, 2-1 SEC) down the previously undefeated Gators (2-1, 2-1) Florida quarterback Kyle Trask had 312 yards passing and four TDs, but the Gators were done in by the late mistake and another poor performance by their defense. Chapman finished with nine receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns as the Aggies bounced back from last week's lopsided loss to No. 2 Alabama. Leon O'Neal intercepted Trask on Florida's first drive of the second half, but the play was wiped away because of a hands-to-the-face penalty on Michael Clemons. There was a scuffle after a play later in that drive that resulted in unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for both teams. - AP College/Texas A&M Football

Texas A&M senior quarterback Kellen Mond earned a vote of confidence from head coach Jimbo Fisher on Monday, coming off a lackluster performance against Vanderbilt. Mond completed 17 of 28 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown in the 17-12 season-opening victory Saturday night at Kyle Field. He also fumbled the football twice and was inconsistent at hitting his receivers. Fisher said there were four or five throws he knows Mond wished he would have made. "I went back through the game," Fisher said. "[His] decision-making went well." Saturday's start was the 35th for Mond, the 27th under Fisher. "Kellen has played a lot of football and had a lot of experience and we'll keep playing and doing what we're doing and keep developing those other guys," Fisher said.

Mond is Fisher's starter for Saturday's game at second-ranked Alabama, but Fisher indicated a change is also possible based on results, which applies to any player. "You know, you're always [evaluating]," Fisher said. "If something happens and the team's not moving...but at the same time, [Mond] still did a lot of good things with the football." Mond initially was scheduled to speak on the team's weekly Zoom press conference, but he was replaced by running back Isaiah Spiller shortly before the start of the availability. After the game Saturday, Mond said he played pretty "clean." "I missed a couple of throws that I wish I could have back," Mond said. "I think that was Week 1, and me and the receivers were still building chemistry, but I think we're going to be a lot cleaner next week, because we have to be." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

While he said he played a "clean" game, he also said he was somewhat surprised he didn't have a better connection with his wide receivers after an extended fall camp due to the later season start date. "I think I see both sides," Mond said. "It surprised me and I think Jhamon [Ausbon], with him opting out pretty late and Hezekiah Jones being down - at times it's really hard, especially with guys who haven't played in games, it's really different. Even going against scout team, that transition to playing against an actual opponent, it can be different." - Austin American Statesman

When Texas A&M senior quarterback Kellen Mond has looked back on his career in Aggieland and discussed his highs and lows with roommate and wide receiver Jhamon Ausbon, there has been a common thread to the moments of success. Decisiveness. It's become an area of focus for the veteran quarterback through a tumultuous offseason. "He doesn't feel like he's been all the way decisive as he should have been," Ausbon said. "As you see, his highs in certain games are when he's his most decisive and when he's most comfortable making decisions. I think that is the one thing that he would say himself that he's trying to work on, everyday decisions in life and being pretty sure in what you want to do."

Life away from the football field has presented a whole new set of choices for college athletes. As protests for equality have been held across America this summer, Mond decisively chose to let his voice be heard, a move noticed by teammates, the university and the Aggie community alike, to a varied assortment of responses. "Anything that's going on, I'm always trying to grow and learn, not just in football but more about life and I'm just trying to give people the same respect that I would want for myself," Mond said during a Zoom press conference Tuesday. "I think I have definitely grown off the field in learning more about myself." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Texas A&M football players are speaking out for the removal of the Lawrence Sullivan Ross statue, including quarterback Kellen Mond on Twitter. Sunday, Mond retweeted a tweet of a former student who said those present at a Saturday campus protest that were in favor of keeping the statue in its current position at Academic Plaza were "using traditions as a scapegoat for racism." "If one side is protesting racism, the other side is counter protesting racism," Mond said in another tweet. "Prairie View A&M was created to obtain federal funds from the second Morrill Act (1890). Instead of integrating the TAMU campus, PVAMU was created. [Ross] killed and disenfranchised blacks." Ross was a Confederate general, a Texas Ranger and the 19th governor of Texas. He served as president of Texas A&M from 1891 until his death in 1898. Those in favor of keeping the statue at the Academic Plaza have cited Ross' efforts in saving a struggling A&M in its early years, securing funds and boosting enrollment, along with his work with Prairie View A&M University. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

The Aggie has thrown for over 6,000 yards combined the last two seasons, but most would agree that he took a step back last season. That step back is likely why he is back in College Station and not in the NFL right now. In his last two games of the season, Mond threw for less than 100 yards in a 50-7 loss to LSU and a 24-21 win over Oklahoma State in the bowl game. Mond is a solid SEC quarterback. It just looks like he won't be the star many predicted after his freshman and sophomore years. - Opelika-Auburn News

Texas A&M football players would need to return to training around July 1 for the season to begin as scheduled, Aggie athletic director Ross Bjork said in a video Monday. Bjork opened up his weekly town hall video with a question from an A&M fan asking when normal operations might resume after spring sports and practices were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. "You need six to eight weeks to really prepare, and that includes training camp and fall practice lead up to the first game," Bjork said in the video, citing information from coaches and team medical professionals. "Could you do it with four? Perhaps, but that will probably take some virtual training before that happens. We really need to be back on campus, we believe, by July 1. Anything past that, you are going to have to accelerate things or do some things virtually to get ready." On Monday, Texas governor Greg Abbott outlined a phased re-opening process for the state that could see some normal functions resuming progressively through the month of May. The statewide shelter-in-place order will expire at midnight Thursday, Abbott said. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp said Wednesday that officials believe a 13-game college football schedule would be possible even if the start of the season was delayed until October because of the new coronavirus. The season is scheduled to begin with seven FBS games Aug. 29 before the majority of teams open the following week. Speaking in a live video discussion with the Texas Tribune, Sharp addressed the football season in answering a question about the university system's lost revenue because of college sporting events which have been canceled because of the COVID-19 virus.

Sharp said he's gotten many questions about football and whether it will return on time this season, if at all. "In some conversations with SEC officials and NCAA, I think they've come to the conclusion that you can probably start football as late as October and still have a 13-game schedule," Sharp said. Sharp then added that there are many unknowns about football season because of the pandemic that has killed thousands and shut down sports across the globe. "We don't know when this thing is going to end," he said. "We don't know when this is going to happen. For all we know, we may have football where we have coaches and players and referees on a field with a TV camera and nobody in the stadium. We don't know." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Kellen Mond ran for a career-high 117 yards and threw a touchdown pass as Texas A&M scored 24 straight points to overcome an early deficit and beat Oklahoma State 24-21 in the Texas Bowl on Friday night. Mond ran 67 yards to give the Aggies (8-5) a 21-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. Mond cut to the right to avoid a couple of defenders and outran everyone else. Tre Sterling had a shot to tackle him around the 25, but Mond ran away from his diving attempt. The Cowboys (8-5) went for it on fourth-and-1 from the Texas A&M 34 on their next possession, but Spencer Sanders was stopped for no gain. The Aggies added a 24-yard field goal to make it 24-14 with about three minutes to go.

Oklahoma State cut the lead to three on a touchdown reception by Braydon Johnson with about a minute left. The Cowboys attempted an onside kick, but A&M recovered it to secure the victory. Chuba Hubbard, who finished the regular season as the nation's leading rusher, ran for 158 yards, and Johnson had 124 yards receiving and two touchdowns for the Cowboys. Hubbard finished the seasonw with 2,094 yards rushing to become the second player in school history to reach 2,000, joining Barry Sanders, who did it in 1988 when he won the Heisman Trophy. Sanders tweeted congratulations to Hubbard after he reached the mark and said: "I know the effort it takes to get there." Mond, who threw for 95 yards, fumbled twice early and the Aggies trailed 14-0 after the first quarter and were down by seven at halftime. - AP College Football

Kellen Mond threw for 221 yards and a touchdown and ran for a second score as Texas A&M extended its winning streak to four games with a 30-6 win over South Carolina on Saturday night. Cordarrian Richardson ran for 130 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown, and added a TD reception to help the Aggies to the victory on a night they piled up 319 yards rushing. With just four wins and one game left the loss guarantees that the Gamecocks (4-7, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) won't make a bowl game for the first time in four seasons. South Carolina fell to 0-6 all-time against Texas A&M and lost its second straight game this season after falling to Appalachian State last week.

The Aggies led by 10 at halftime and neither team could get anything going after the break, combining for six punts in the third quarter. South Carolina went three-and-out twice and the Aggies punted after just three plays once. Texas A&M (7-3, 4-2) was finally able to sustain a drive when it capped a 14-play drive with a 40-yard field goal which extended the lead to 16-3 early in the fourth quarter. The Aggies forced a fourth straight punt by South Carolina after that and Mond made it 22-3 with a 1-yard TD dive with about 10 minutes left. Richardson set up that score when he scampered 31 yards a play earlier. - Texas A&M/AP College Football

After constantly talking to his team about the importance of playing complementary football, coach Jimbo Fisher was thrilled to see Texas A&M score touchdowns off each of Mississippi State's three turnovers in a win on Saturday. "You learn to feed off each other, that's what sports is about," Fisher said. "We capitalized today." Kellen Mond threw for 234 yards and accounted for five touchdowns to lead Texas A&M to the 49-30 victory. "Kellen I thought really managed the game well today. ...he was so accurate with the football," Fisher said. "He just keeps growing as a football player."

The Aggies (5-3, 3-2 SEC) led by 18 points at halftime after taking advantage of two turnovers by Mississippi State (3-5, 1-4). They didn't waste any time getting going in the second half when Jalen Wydermyer scored a touchdown on a 52-yard catch and run on the fourth play of the third quarter to make it 35-10. Garrett Schrader threw a 14-yard pass to Isaiah Zuber for a score to cut the lead to 35-17 on Mississippi State's first drive of the second half. But freshman Isaiah Spiller had a 4-yard TD run after that to stretch it to 42-17. Kylin Hill had a 39-yard run on Mississippi State's next drive and capped it with a 4-yard touchdown run to get the Bulldogs within 42-24 early in the fourth. - Texas A&M/AP College Football

No. 23 Texas A&M had a chance to really take control early when big defensive tackle Justin Madubuike intercepted a pass at the goal line. That's just not what happens when the Aggies, even when favored by more than three touchdowns, play Arkansas. These games are always close. Kellen Mond threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns, and Quartney Davis' second TD catch put the Aggies ahead to stay in a 31-27 win Saturday over Arkansas, which drove to the A&M 19 in the final minute before a fourth-down incompletion. "I wouldn't say it's embarrassing. I've been playing this game for the past three years and it seems like every year it comes down to the wire," Davis said. "It's a pretty interesting game."

Instead of the Aggies (3-2, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) seizing momentum after Madubuike picked off the pass by Nick Starkel, DeJon Harris scooped up a fumble and returned it 6 yards for a touchdown on the next play to get Arkansas within 14-10 with 5 ½ minutes left in the first half. Starkel, the grad transfer who played for Texas A&M the past two seasons, sustained a significant bruise on his left (non-throwing) arm when tackling the 304-pound Madubuike and didn't return. "I had never had an interception in my life," Madubuike said. "I just looked up to see where the ball was and it just appeared right to my left peripheral. I turned and it was right there, and grabbed it and tried to run, and he tried to tackle me." - Texas A&M/AP College Football

With Texas A&M's date against No. 1 Clemson looming next week, it would have been easy for the Aggies to take 33 1/2 point underdog Texas State lightly. After the 12th-ranked Aggies easily handled the Bobcats, coach Jimbo Fisher said he never worried about his team looking past its first opponent. "I'm telling you there was no looking at Clemson, doing anything with Clemson and that's a fact," he said. "We've learned that. We're not going to do that...you've got to learn to play the game at hand and I thought they did that."

Kellen Mond threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score in just more than three quarters, and Texas A&M had four interceptions in the 41-7 rout. Mond, who threw for 194 yards, had touchdown passes of 21 and 3 yards and ran for another score in the first two quarters as Texas A&M raced to a 28-0 halftime lead. Fisher raved about Mond's improvement since last season. "I think he's really in a good place right now," Fisher said. "Command of things is really good. He really understands what's going on." - AP College Football
