Instead of preparing for Texas A&M, North Carolina's leading tackler, leading rusher and leading receiver will instead start getting ready for the NFL Draft. Linebacker Chazz Surratt, running back Michael Carter and wide receiver Dyami Brown all announced Monday over social media that their college football careers will end short of appearing with the Tar Heels in the Orange Bowl. Surratt and Carter were both seniors; Brown was a junior. Surratt, who had 91 tackles, has led the team in tackles the past two seasons after converting from quarterback his freshman and sophomore seasons. His absence will leave quite the void in the interior of the defense. Starting linebacker Jeremiah Gemmel said he's excited to see what sophomore Eugene Asante will do with the opportunity to play. - Charlotte Observer

The last time UNC played Notre Dame, linebacker Chazz Surratt started at quarterback for the Tar Heels. Surratt started seven games at quarterback in that 2017 season. He eventually agreed to a position switch in the spring of 2019 and became a revelation. In his first season at linebacker last year, Surratt garnered first-team All-ACC honors and finished runner-up for ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Through eight games this season, Surratt leads the Tar Heels with 68 tackles and five sacks to go with 6.5 tackles for a loss, five quarterback hurries, one interception, one pass breakup, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Look for Surratt to be disruptive against Notre Dame's potent ground game. - South Bend Tribune

North Carolina coach Mack Brown listed the pass rush as one of his big concerns entering this season. He wanted the defensive front to get pressure without needing to blitz. Frankly, after they totaled 31 sacks last year as a defense, Brown needed the blitzes to work, too. In the No. 18 Tar Heels' 31-6 victory over Syracuse on Saturday, Brown got both. The pass rush spearheaded arguably the most complete defensive effort of Brown's reboot in Chapel Hill. Yes, it's only a snapshot against a Syracuse team that has its own questions to answer offensively. But Carolina's defense showed it won't need the offense to carry the team this season. The Tar Heels can win on defense. "We kind of took a chip on our shoulder going in knowing the kind of guys we got playing on the defensive side of the ball," linebacker Chazz Surratt said in a postgame video conference. "I'm just really glad we played the way how we're supposed to play, and I think we can be really good on defense. We got a lot of really good guys up front in the back, and I think the sky's the limit of our defense."

UNC recorded seven sacks, its most in a single-game since doing the same against Pittsburgh in 2013. The six points allowed were the fewest against an ACC opponent since holding Duke to the same on Nov. 7, 2009. Five different players got in on the sacks including Surratt and Fox, who had two apiece. Surratt gave part of the credit to the Heels' secondary, whose coverage often made Orange quarterback Tommy DeVito hold the ball longer. DeVito finished with just 112 passing yards and his 22-yard completion to receiver Taj Harris was the only play Carolina allowed of more than 20 yards. "Our secondary is really, really good," Surratt said. "They kind of bide time for us to get back there and make plays on the quarterback." - Raleigh News Observer

North Carolina has hired Nebraska's Jovan Dewitt as its outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. UNC announced Dewitt's hire Monday after Dewitt spent the past two seasons in the same role with the Huskers. He replaces Scott Boone, with a team spokesman saying last week Boone wouldn't return to Mack Brown's staff after "a mutual decision to part ways" due to philosophical differences. Dewitt's special teams have seven punt or kickoff returns for touchdowns in the past four seasons along with four blocked punts over the past two years. Dewitt worked with current UNC defensive coordinator Jay Bateman at Army in 2014 and 2015. He has also worked at UCF, Florida Atlantic and Northern Iowa in the past decade. - AP College Football

North Carolina linebacker Chazz Surratt has turned out to be a natural at his new position: The older brother of Wake Forest WR Sage Surratt had a team-best 12 tackles against Duke plus a sack, and intercepted a jump pass at the goal line with 14 seconds to seal the 20-17 victory over the Blue Devils. Ironically, Surratt was a quarterback for Duke's previous visit to Chapel Hill two years ago and threw an interception that helped seal the Blue Devils' victory. - AP College Football

North Carolina got the big defensive stop it needed in yet another drama-filled finish. Chazz Surratt picked off Deon Jackson's trick-play pass at the goal line with 14 seconds left, helping the Tar Heels hang on for a 20-17 win on Saturday night that reclaimed the rivalry's Victory Bell. The Blue Devils had pushed from their own 6-yard line after a UNC turnover to inside the UNC 5 with less than a minute to play. But with no timeouts, Jackson took a handoff and attempted a jump-pass while being hit that was snagged by Surratt, the QB-turned-linebacker who had leapt to deflect the ball but instead ended up corralling it for a game-saving takeaway.

Surratt said the Tar Heels (4-4, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) had discussed that the play could be coming during a timeout only moments before. "We were expecting it," Surratt said. "I thought he'd throw it a little higher and jumped. It came right to me. I just wanted to get it and make sure I got the ball in my hands and (get) on the ground." It was another close-call win for a UNC team that has played seven games decided by six or fewer points, with each being decided in the final 80 seconds. "We're TV darlings because we come down to the last drive on every game we've play but one," UNC coach Mack Brown said. "And this, again the last play." The Tar Heels celebrated by sprinting across the field as time expired to reclaim the Victory Bell that had been in Duke's possession the past three seasons. - North Carolina/AP College Football

Each of the Surratt brothers is delivering remarkable results. Chazz Surratt is a former North Carolina quarterback who switched positions and now is the Tar Heels' leading tackler. Sage Surratt leads the ACC in receiving with 46 catches for 711 yards and nine touchdowns, already improving upon his 2018 totals in each of those three categories. - AP College Football
