UCF senior receiver Tre Nixon said he isn't looking to become the next Gabe Davis, but he is focusing on improving his leadership skills and preparing to take on a bigger role within the Knights' offense. As Tre Nixon begins his final season at UCF, the receiver isn't shying away from assuming a more vocal leadership role on the team. He knows it's particularly important following the departure of fellow receiver Gabe Davis, who left early and was selected in the NFL draft. "Being an upperclassman, being a senior now - it's really important to lead these young guys," Nixon told reporters during a videoconference interview.

"That's something I'm still improving on every single day." Nixon's even taking some leadership cues from one of the greatest athletes of all time: Michael Jordan. "Even watching this documentary, I'm learning so much stuff on how to be a leader. How MJ pushed his dudes and try and translate it to my game," Nixon said, referring to the recent ESPN documentary series "The Last Dance," which showcased Jordan and the Chicago Bulls' run to six NBA championships. Nixon put together a career-best season in 2019, finishing second on the team behind Davis in receiving yards (830) and receiving touchdowns (7) while finishing third in receptions (49). It was his second season with the Knights after transferring from Ole Miss in spring 2018. - Orlando Sentinel

Gabe Davis' departure to the NFL is a big blow for UCF football but the emergence of Tre Nixon (16) and Marlon Williams in the offense along with the return of Otis Anderson should supply ample experience for the Knights in 2020. For the second time in the past three seasons, UCF finished 2019 in the top 10 in the country in passing offense. The Knights built a reputation for explosive plays and the team didn't disappoint last season after recording 105 plays of at least 20 yards. Fifty-eight of those came from receivers Gabe Davis (22), Tre Nixon (14), Marlon Williams (7), Jacob Harris (6) and Otis Anderson (3).

"Tre's done a great job for us for two years," Wyatt said. "He's had some big plays for us. He's been able to get deep and give us some big plays, but he wants to improve his overall game." - Orlando Sentinel

UCF has closed the book on Gabriel Davis' stellar career and the Knights are already working to identify their next great wide receiver. It's a story receivers coach Darrell Wyatt said hasn't been written yet. When Wyatt was asked who would replace Davis, who declared early for the NFL after setting the single-season school record with 1,241 yards and 12 touchdowns this past season, he responded, "I was asked this question two years ago. That's still a work in progress. Who's going to be the guy? I think you earn that in practice. You earn that in the scrimmages. "We've got some talented guys. We've got a few guys that have come back and made some plays, but past results do not guarantee future results. Every day, they come out and grind and the guy that emerges will be the go-to guy."

Before UCF suspended spring football workouts due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Knights' receivers were battling to show Wyatt they could replace Davis. Tre Nixon entered the offseason as a strong candidate for the job. Nixon was second on the team behind Davis in receiving yards (830) and receiving touchdowns (7) last season while third in catches (49) behind Davis and Marlon Williams. He also was targeted 94 times, second-most behind Davis (133). "Tre's done a great job for us for two years," Wyatt said. "He's had some big plays for us. He's been able to get deep and give us some big plays, but he wants to improve his overall game. He's been in what we call the lab, working on his craft." Nixon, who transferred from Ole Miss in 2017, points to several areas of his game he's hoping to bolster this spring. - Orlando Sentinel
