 Daquan Newkirk, Florida, Player News

  01/15/21 - DT Daquan NewkirkrSr/2022, Florida, 6-2, 317 (DS#999 DT) + More +

Former Auburn defensive tackle Daquan Newkirk will finish his career in his home state while remaining in the SEC. Newkirk, who announced over the weekend his intent to leave Auburn, committed to Florida on Thursday. Newkirk was a senior last season for Auburn and should be immediately eligible as a graduate transfer at Florida. A native of Orlando, Fla., Newkirk spent the last three seasons at Auburn after originally committing as part of the Tigers' 2015 class but instead started his career in the junior college ranks. He joined Auburn in 2018, but his first two years were marred by two separate Achilles injuries. He finished his Auburn career with 39 tackles, including four for a loss and 1.5 sacks. - Birmingham News

Newkirk came to Auburn as a highly-touted junior college transfer in 2018 only to tear his Achilles tendon in one leg before spring ball that year before tearing his Achilles in the other leg the following spring. Newkirk managed to find the field as a sophomore and a junior but was on the mend during both seasons, leaving him limited with what he could accomplish up front. Now, the senior is determined to prove that he can be a true menace for the Tigers. Newkirk showed he was up for the task Saturday by playing for 53 snaps - his most since coming to Auburn - and putting together a six-tackle, two-tackle for loss performance against the Wildcats. The goal is to keep that style of play up going forward. "It felt amazing honestly because that's something I haven't done since I've been here," Newkirk said about the sack. "I haven't been able to prove myself because I've been injured. It definitely felt good, just being out there, playing ball, doing what I love and making good plays." - Opelika-Auburn News

  08/04/19 - DT Daquan NewkirkrSr/2022, Florida, 6-2, 317 (DS#999 DT) + More +

Auburn is believed to have one of the best, if not the best, defensive lines in the country this season thanks to the return of Brown, Marlon Davidson and Nick Coe, as well as other key rotational pieces. Yet due to injuries to Daquan Newkirk (Achilles) and Coynis Miller (shoulder), the depth at defensive tackle was thin as the Tigers opened fall camp on Friday.

Newkirk is still sidelined by an Achilles injury - his second in as many offseasons - that cost him the spring, while Miller is still limited while recovering from a shoulder injury. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said Friday that Newkirk could miss a considerable part of the season as he continues his rehab process, while Miller - who was in an orange non-contact jersey for Day 1 - could return to full strength before the end of fall camp on Aug. 18. - Birmingham News
