  12/11/21 - WR Britain CoveyrSr/2022, Utah, 5-08, 169 (DS#34 WR) + More +

Utah wide receiver Britain Covey has elected to enter the NFL draft, and the Utes' game against Ohio State in the Rose Bowl will be his final as a Ute. "Many people reading this are probably thinking, "Wait, you're telling me this guy has another year of eligibility?" The answer is yes. While it sounds fun to drag out my college career until I collect social security, I'm ready for my next chapter. I feel perfectly content with my college career," Covey said in a Twitter post.

Covey's first game as a Ute came against Michigan in 2015. He then went on a Latter-day Saint mission in 2016 and 2017. Covey redshirted in 2019 after appearing in four games, and with the NCAA COVID-19 rules that gave players in 2020 season an extra year of eligibility, Covey could have chosen to come back for one final year as a Ute in 2022. In his career with Utah, Covey has 1,977 receiving yards, which ranks sixth on Utah's all-time career receiving yards list. This season, he has 49 receptions for 480 yards and two touchdowns. - Deseret News

Britain Covey returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half, giving Utah 14 points in 27 seconds and a 28-0 lead, and the No. 24 Utes ended No. 4 Oregon's College Football Playoff hopes with a 38-7 victory Saturday night. Tavion Thomas ran for 94 yards and three touchdowns to help the Utes (8-3, 7-1 Pac-12) wrap up a share of the Pac-12 South title and a spot in the conference championship game. Utah has won four in a row. Thomas has run for a Utah-record 17 touchdowns this season. The previous mark was 15, shared by Zack Moss and John White IV. Cameron Rising threw for 178 yards. His top target, Brant Kuithe, piled up 118 yards on five catches for just the second 100-yard game of his career. Covey had 191 all-purpose yards. Anthony Brown threw for 231 yards and a touchdown for Oregon (9-2, 6-2 Pac-12, No. 3 CFP). Oregon rushed for 63 yards and had 294 yards of offense. - Oregon/AP College Football

  03/24/21 - WR Britain CoveyrSr/2022, Utah, 5-08, 169 (DS#34 WR) + More +

There always seem to be jokes about Utah wide receiver Britain Covey's age. During media availability via Zoom Monday morning, he cracked that he's been in the program for 35 years. It only seems that way. Covey had an impactful freshman season in 2015, followed by a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Chile. Since returning from his mission, he's experienced both good times and tough times. He's dealt with a variety of injuries. While he is as healthy as he's been for some time, during spring practices, in some ways, Covey is feeling a little different.

"We've got a great group of guys and I'm really grateful for that. It is really cool to be an older guy on the team. It's strange," said the 5-foot-8 junior from Provo. "Every other year in my career, I've felt like this was the older guys' team. This is probably the first year where I come in and I see someone doing something that maybe is not in Ute culture. And I'm the one that's like, 'No, this is my team. We don't act like that here. This is our team.' That's really cool to feel like that and feel like an older guy." Most years, Utah loses a handful of players to the NFL. But all the players that could have declared for the draft have decided to return for the 2021 campaign. - Deseret News

It was good to see Covey out there healthy because even he will tell you it's been a long road with injuries, not to mention the pandemic. The third-quarter touchdown reception was aided by Bentley doing a nice job of looking off the defense, then hitting Covey over the middle on a slant on second-and-goal from the 8. Covey's punt return was vintage, shades of his 2015 touchdown return at Fresno State. He fielded the ball cleanly at his own 34, shook an arm tackle, and blasted up the middle, untouched before juking the punter at the Oregon State 10 and walking into the end zone. "I don't even know if I can express how frustrating injuries have been for me," said Covey, who caught his first touchdown since Oct. 20, 2018 vs. USC. "Being healthy makes the biggest difference, I can't even explain. I came in tonight more excited than any game the past two years because I knew when I lined up, I wouldn't be thinking about injury, or any part of my body." - Salt Lake Tribune

Britain Covey hears the jokes, but in fairness, jokes about how old he is and how long he has been at the University of Utah are probably valid. Still only a redshirt junior at the age of 23 after taking a two-year LDS mission during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, Covey's first collegiate game was against the University of Michigan in 2015. The game stands out because it was Jim Harbaugh's head-coaching debut with the Wolverines, which, on a college football timeline, feels like a lifetime ago. With no fall football for the Pac-12, and no promise of a winter/spring season at this point, Covey, aware of his age and injury history, plans to play out the final two years of his career at Utah, at which point it would theoretically be the fall of 2022 and he will be 25.

Instead of waiting for those jokes to come in two years, Covey is getting out in front of them. "If I do, I'll be the first grandpa in college football history," Covey joked to The Salt Lake Tribune late last week. "I know my age is a running joke, but honestly, I feel like I'm in my prime and my body is where it's never been before. You look at the NFL, the best wide receivers, the average age is 27, 28-years old. Those guys are craftsmen, but they needed to mature and develop. I think I'm just entering that phase." Covey continues to believe the NFL is an attainable goal, but he's keeping it in the back of his mind with more pressing matters to deal with in the present. - Salt Lake Tribune

There are a slew of awards handed out at the close of every college football season. The Heisman Trophy is the most notable, but there is also the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award, each given to the player of the year. There is the Jim Thorpe Award, awarded to the nation's best defensive back, and the Davey O'Brien Award, which honors the country's best quarterback, and, well, you get the idea. There is basically a prestigious award for every position on the football field, not to mention All-America honors and more beyond that. With so much recognition of the athletes, deservedly so, college football is hardly in need of another award. And yet, that is what CBS Sports' Matt Hinton recently proposed, albeit facetiously.

What is this new award, you ask? Hinton calls it the "The Taysom Hill Trophy for perpetual eligibility." It honors the college football player who has been on the scene for so long that there is no way, at first glance, that they could possibly still be eligible to play. And this year's winner, according to Hinton, is Utah's Britain Covey. - Salt Lake Tribune
