The 2019 regular season closed with the Sun Belt Conference football postseason honors unveiled on Wednesday. Arkansas State and Appalachian State each received two of the top individual honors as the Red Wolves had redshirt senior Omar Bayless named Player of the Year and redshirt freshman quarterback Layne Hatcher named Freshman of the Year, while the Mountaineers had junior running back Darrynton Evans named Offensive Player of the Year and senior linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither named Defensive Player of the Year. Troy junior wide receiver Kaylon Geiger was voted Newcomer of the Year and Louisiana head coach Billy Napier was selected Coach of the Year.

Bayless, Evans, Davis-Gaither and Geiger also received All-Sun Belt recognition on the first team. Appalachian State led in All-Sun Belt selections with 21, including six on the first team (three on offense, three on defense), followed by Arkansas State and Louisiana with 16 each. With two on offense, two on defense and two on special teams, the Red Wolves tied Appalachian State for the most honorees on the first team. - Sun Belt Football

Appalachian State's historic football season continued as the Mountaineers moved up to 21st in the Dec. 3 release of the College Football Playoff Top 25 Rankings. The Mountaineers are in the CFP rankings for the fourth-straight week, ranking 25th on Nov. 12 and Nov. 26 and 24th on Nov. 19, and earned the school's and conference's highest-ever CFP ranking. Appalachian State, also ranked 20th in both Associated Press Top 25 and 22nd in Amway Coaches powered by USA Today Sports Top 25 polls this week, stands as the first team in Sun Belt history to be ranked in the three major NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision Rankings.

The national poll rankings of 20th tie the conference's all-time high set by the Mountaineers earlier this season in the Oct. 27 polls. The Mountaineers are the first team in Sun Belt history to achieve two wins against Autonomy Five conference schools in the same season. The Mountaineers' wins over North Carolina and South Carolina with Georgia State's victory at Tennessee and Coastal Carolina's victory at Kansas give the Sun Belt a conference-record four wins against Autonomy Five schools in the same season. - Sun Belt Football

The Mountaineers offensive prowess has never been in doubt, but now the defense is looking strong, too. This marks the second straight week they've held an opponent to seven points. Last week they beat Louisiana-Lafayette 17-7, holding the Ragin Cajuns to 34 points below their season average. "We stopped the run," Drinkwitz said after the initial touchdown drive. "We were getting bled down the field in the run game, and our D-line wasn't very physical, nor our linebackers. Those guys just settled down and got used to the game speed." - AP College Football

Darrynton Evans rushed for three touchdowns, and Akeem Davis-Gaither blocked a 56-yard field goal attempt on the final play of Appalachian State's 34-31 victory over North Carolina on Saturday in the instate programs' first meeting in nearly 80 years. Demetrius Taylor returned a fumble 20 yards for a key score, and Zac Thomas added 224 yards passing and another 57 on the ground to help the Mountaineers (3-0) beat a power-conference opponent for the first time since that unforgettable upset of Michigan 12 years ago. That one ended on a blocked field goal - and so did this one, with Appalachian State swatting away Noah Ruggles' kick at the buzzer that would have forced overtime.

"It wasn't going to be an upset," first-year coach Eliah Drinkwitz said. "We belonged on that football field today and we wanted to prove it." Evans scored on runs of 5, 2 and 3 yards while Chandler Staton kicked early field goals of 31 and 43 yards for Appalachian State, off to its best start since the 2010 team won its first eight games. Sam Howell threw three touchdown passes for the Tar Heels (2-2) - who trailed entering the fourth quarter for the fourth straight game. "We're continuing to try to find our identity, and our identity so far is, we start slow, we dig ourselves in a huge hole and we come back and fight," coach Mack Brown said. "The first two weeks, we made the plays to win at the end of a game, and the last two weeks, we've run out of time and didn't have a chance to do the things we need to do." - Appalachian State/AP College Football
