  05/24/22 - ILB Diego FagotSr/2022, Navy, 6-3, 235 (DS#26 ILB) + More +

Ravens linebacker Diego Fagot is among four Naval Academy athletes who have received permission from the Department of Defense to pursue professional sports, the academy announced Sunday. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III issued the approval Saturday in accordance with Directive-Type Memorandum 19-011, which was issued Nov. 8, 2019. That policy, titled "Military Service Academy Graduates Seeking to Participate in Professional Sports," allowed service academy graduates to pursue employment in professional sports immediately following graduation.

Athletes approved for the policy are allowed to graduate from their respective service academies but are not commissioned as officers. Whenever their professional careers are complete, those individuals are commissioned and must serve their mandatory military requirement of at least five years. Football player Michael McMorris, women's basketball player Jennifer Coleman and men's soccer player Matt Nocita join Fagot as the Naval Academy athletes approved to pursue professional sports. All four athletes will now enlist in either the Navy or Marine Corps' "Individual Ready Reserve" following graduation from the academy Friday. - Capital Times

Navy football finished seventh in the American Athletic Conference standings last season. Apparently, media members covering the conference think the Midshipmen will fall further toward the cellar in 2021. Navy was predicted to finish in a tie for eighth place in the 11-team league in the preseason media poll that was released Wednesday morning, as the Midshipmen and East Carolina both received 85 votes. Cincinnati, which finished the 2020 season ranked No. 8 nationally, has been tabbed as the preseason favorite. "We're picked low pretty much every year. I don't worry too much about what people say," Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said during Wednesday's virtual AAC Football Media Day. "Let people pick us where they want to pick us. We'll just keep our mouths quiet and grind."

Since joining the AAC in 2015, Navy has compiled an overall conference record of 30-17. The Midshipmen captured the West Division outright in 2016 and finished in a tie for first in 2015 and 2019. Navy ranks fourth behind Memphis (34-14), Temple (31-16) and Central Florida (31-17) for most wins over the last six seasons. "I'm not worried about preseason polls; I'm just worried about our preparation, and I like where we're at right now," he said. "We'll be ready Sept. 4 when the first game comes." - Capital Times

Kevin Brennan, Mychal Cooper, Diego Fagot and Chance Warren were almost unanimous selections as captains of the Navy football team. Those four rising seniors were also unanimous when asked what it means to be voted captain by teammates. To a man, they called it the highest honor they have received to date. "It's a great honor and one of the things I'll hold onto for the rest of my life because it's not something you did, it's your teammates voting you in and that humbles me," Fagot said. "We all feel blessed to be in the position to represent the team as a whole."

Warren and Cooper were chosen as the offensive captains with Brennan and Fagot as their defensive counterparts. They were voted as captains earlier this month, shortly after Navy spring camp concluded. "I'm very excited about our captains and I'm really excited about this team. These four have really made an effort during the spring to bring the team together and that's been a big priority for them," Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said. "Also, nobody outworks these four on the field and when your best players are your hardest workers, you have a chance to be good." - Capital Times

Diego Fagot delivered an interesting history lesson when asked to explain the origins of the Navy football team motto for the 2021 season. Fagot and other rising senior leaders settled on "Burn the Boats" as a motivational slogan to begin using during the grueling winter strength and conditioning workouts known as "fourth quarters." Navy's standout inside linebacker referenced that motto several times during an online news conference to discuss spring camp, which will now begin Friday. "We're really trying to emphasize those three words. We need to leave everything off the field and focus on what we have at hand," Fagot said. "Our class is really trying to emphasize the mentality piece because there is so much going on around us. Last season, there was just so much stuff happening off the field that it affected us on the field." - Capital Times
