James Morgan, Florida International, Player News

James Morgan's two-year run as the quarterback for the FIU Panthers was one of the most prolific in school history. Now he's the second FIU quarterback to be selected in the NFL Draft. The New York Jets took Morgan with the 19th pick of the fourth round - No. 125 overall - on Saturday in the 2020 NFL Draft. The quarterback is the ninth player in Panthers history to be selected in the Draft and the first since Houston Texans quarterback Alex McGough was a seventh-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2018 NFL Draft. "My top strength is my preparation," Morgan said. "I'm a really good leader... My biggest asset is my hard work."

McGough is the owner of most career and single-season passing records at FIU, but Morgan made a run at most of the single-season records throughout his two years in Miami. Morgan, who began his career with the Bowling Green Falcons, broke McGough's single-season record with 26 touchdown passes in 2018. Morgan also threw for 2,727 yards in 2018 before missing the Bahamas Bowl because of an injury, leaving him less than 100 yards short of McGough's single-season record of 2,791 yards. - Miami Herald

So far, such teams as Green Bay, Tampa Bay, Las Vegas, Miami, New England, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Buffalo, New York Jets and New York Giants reportedly have shown interest in the 23-year-old Morgan. That's because the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Morgan is a prototypical NFL quarterback. Just ask Marshall University fans. The Thundering Herd managed to defeat Morgan and his FIU teammates in 2018 and 2019, but it wasn't easy. Marshall won 28-25 in 2018 at Miami and 30-27 in overtime last season in Huntington. In 2018, Morgan struggled vs. the Herd, completing 21 of 33 passes for 177 yards with zero touchdowns and two interceptions.

But, although he fought some nagging injuries in 2019, Morgan played well in the rain and cold at Joan C. Edwards Stadium last November. The FIU star completed 21 of 37 passes for one touchdown and one interception. The interesting part about Morgan is he actually began his collegiate career at Bowling Green in 2015. Morgan was the Falcons' starting quarterback as a redshirt freshman in 2016, but midway through the 2017 season he was replaced by a young quarterback whose name is very familiar to West Virginia University fans - Jarrett Doege. Doege, of course, transferred to WVU, started the Mountaineers' last four games in 2019 and is the odds-on favorite to be WVU's starting quarterback next season. - Charleston Gazette

Florida International's James Morgan led two first-quarter scoring drives and Charlotte's Benny LeMay rushed for two touchdowns to lead the East to a 31-27 victory in the East-West Shrine Bowl on Saturday. LeMay's 9-yard TD run with just under two minutes remaining sealed offensive MVP honors for the 5-foot-8, 216-pound running back in the nation's longest-running college football all-star game, which was played at Tropicana Field.

Morgan started at quarterback for the East and shared playing time with Princeton's Kevin Davidson and Mississippi State's Tommy Stevens, who led his team downfield for the winning TD after the West took a 27-24 lead on James Robinson's 63-yard scoring run. Robinson, who rushed for 1,899 yards and 18 touchdowns for Illinois State this season, finished with 80 yards rushing on seven attempts. He gained an additional 56 yards on two pass receptions, one a 46-yarder that led to a field goal. - AP College Football

The last time Miami played at the Orange Bowl was a disaster. The Hurricanes' return to the site might have been even worse. Miami didn't just lose a football game on Saturday night -- it lost to crosstown rival FIU, a relatively fledgling program that has been completely overshadowed by the Hurricanes since its inception two decades ago and barely registers a blip of notice. That is, until now. James Morgan threw a pair of touchdown passes, and FIU - a team mostly composed of Florida kids, many of whom grew up wanting to play for the Hurricanes -- pulled off easily the most significant win in its program's history by stunning Miami 30-24 at Marlins Park, a stadium built on the soil where the five-time national champions were once the most unbeatable force in college football. "That used to be our dream school," said FIU kicker Jose Borregales, who connected on three field goals -- two of them from 50 yards or more. "Everybody knew Miami. Beating them today, it's like, yeah, we're here."

The Panthers were 20-point underdogs, were 0-3 all-time against Miami and hadn't even led the Hurricanes in any of those previous meetings. But just like Miami's last game on those grounds, a 48-0 defeat to Virginia in 2007 in the team's Orange Bowl finale, this one will be remembered as an inexcusably bad night for the Hurricanes. Quarterback Jarren Williams was intercepted three times, running back Deejay Dallas departed early in the second half with what appeared to be a grotesque elbow injury, and the Hurricanes - who once won 58 consecutive games at the site - never led. "Utter disappointment," Miami coach Manny Diaz said. - Miami/AP College Football

James Morgan threw for 252 yards and Napoleon Maxwell rushed for 83 yards and a score as Florida International battled to a 24-17 win over Old Dominion on Saturday. FIU (5-4, 3-3 Conference USA), which had won three consecutive games before being upset by Middle Tennessee 50-17 last week, led 16-7 going into the fourth quarter. Morgan ran in from the 1 to go up 24-10 with 6:17 remaining in the game. Old Dominion marched 65 yards in 10 plays to close within a touchdown after Lala Davis scored from the 10 with 2:54 left. The ensuing onside kick went out of bounds and FIU took over on ODU's 46. The Monarch defense stiffened, forcing a punt that gave the Monarchs the ball on their own 9. Two plays later Olin Cushion III picked off a Hayden Wolff pass to secure the win. Jose Borregales had field goals of 21, 31 and 42 yards in the first half to give the Panthers a 9-7 lead at the break. Wolff threw for 169 yards for Old Dominion (1-8, 0-5), which has dropped eight straight. - Florida International/AP College Football

James Morgan passed for 263 yards and two touchdowns, Anthony Jones rushed for 115 yards and a score and Florida International routed Massachusetts 44-0 on Saturday night. Maurice Alexander returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown and totaled 140 yards on two returns for FIU (2-3). The Panthers led 34-0 at halftime, scoring touchdowns on two TD passes by Morgan, Alexander's punt return touchdown, Jones' scoring run and two field goals by Jose Borregales. Through three quarters UMass (1-5) had 130 total yards with five first downs and trailed 44-0. The Minutemen lost yards in the fourth quarter and finished at 115 total. FIU's Austin Maloney, averaging 20.7 yards per catch, caught two passes for 47 yards and Tony Gaiter IV had seven receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown. - Florida International/AP College Football
