Former Syracuse football punter Sterling Hofrichter was picked by the Atlanta Falcons in the seventh round of the NFL Draft on Saturday. Hofrichter, taken 228th overall, joins defensive end Alton Robinson (Seattle Seahawks, fifth round, 148th overall) as Orange products to be selected this year, marking the first time since 2014 that multiple SU players have been drafted. He's also the second punter to come off the board after Texas A&M's Branden Mann.A four-year starter for the Orange, Hofrichte r followed Riley Dixon, now on the New York Giants, and Rob Long in the program's lineage of prolific field-switchers. He was one of three finalists for the Ray Guy Award last year and was voted to seven different All-America teams. Hofrichter, a three-t ime All-ACC performer, ranks second in SU history in gross punting average (43.27), having dropped at least 20 punts inside the opposing 20-yard line in all four of his seasons. He's logged only 13 touchbacks during that span, including two last year des pite 65 attempts, and recorded 72 career 50-plus yard punts. - The Post-Standard

2019 RAY GUY AWARD FINALIST: Sterling Hofrichter, Syracuse,...A three-year team captain, Hofrichter has kicked 64 times this season with a gross average of 43.7 yards per punt and a net average of 42.8 yards per kick. He leads the ACC with 27 punts downe d inside the 20-yard line with just two touchbacks, and he's booted 20 balls that have traveled 50+ yards. Additionally, Syracuse ranks fourth nationally in net punting as opponents have only 10 punt returns for 17 yards (1.7 avg.) against the Orange. Mo re than just a punting specialist, Hofrichter also handles kickoffs. He's even tried his hand at placekicker, drilling a 52-yard field goal versus Holy Cross on Sept. 28 in his only attempt of the year.Hofrichter's best punting performance of the season came against Clemson on Sept. 14. He averaged of 52.2 yards per kick on nine punts against the Tigers, the best one-game mark in team history for a player with more than five punts. Hofrichter hit a career-best six punts that traveled at least 50 yards, including matching his career long with a 65-yard boot. Syracuse punter Sterling Hofrichter was named a captain last week and has done his share to help the Orange. He leads the ACC with 19 punts downed inside the 20 this season, is tied with Virginia Tech's Oscar Bradburn for the league lead with 16 punts of 50 or more yards, and ranks 15th nationally with a gross punting average of 45.3 yards. Hofrichter's booming kicks have produced a few turnovers, too. "We're just going to come out and try to play our best game of the season," Hofrichter said as he prep ared for Florida State.
