  03/30/21 - Giles JacksonrSr/2025, Washington, 5-08, 187 (DS#74 WR) + More +

A returning scholarship wide receiver is planning to depart Michigan. Giles Jackson, a junior wideout known for his kickoff returns and speed on the football field, entered his name into the NCAA's transfer portal on Monday. Jackson confirmed the decision in a morning announcement on social media, saying it came "after many long nights of deep thought." "A world of thanks to all the coaches, training staff, academic support staff and especially my teammates and friends," Jackson wrote on Twitter. "You will always be held in the highest regard. Lastly, thank you to all the fans. You will be missed." The move comes as Michigan is set to resume its spring practice schedule in Ann Arbor this week. By all accounts, Jackson was a participant in practice up until now. A reason for his planned departure has not been disclosed. - Ann Arbor News

  03/23/21 - Jeremiah HunterrSr/2025, Washington, 6-1, 208 (DS#167 WR) + More +

Earlier this spring, head coach Justin Wilcox declared that the team's "whole mission in life" was to improve as a staff and as a team. It appears that Wilcox and his players have followed that mission closely. "We're better than we were yesterday. I don't think there's any doubt in our minds," Wilcox said. For a team that finished a lackluster 1-3 last season, being better than yesterday is a great place to start. Adding fresh talent and developing older talent should only further boost the Bears' chances. "It's more competitive in each individual position group than it's been since I've been here, which is a great thing," Wilcox said. "There are some newer, younger guys who are really pushing the other guys at those positions."

One of those younger guys will presumably be rising sophomore wide receiver Jeremiah Hunter, who has been receiving plenty of buzz this spring. Standing at 6'2" and measuring in at 190 lbs., Hunter did not see the field time last year due to injuries, but he ran with the first-team group Saturday. Cal's first-team offense had limited time to operate, as the staff sought to get more live reps for those lower on the depth chart. But in that limited time, Hunter snagged a nice catch along the sideline on a well-run comeback route and nearly moved the chains. - Daily Californian

  03/20/21 - Will RogersrSr/2025, Washington, 6-2, 207 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Mississippi State has a quarterback competition on its hands. Speaking with reporters Thursday after the Bulldogs opened spring practices, head coach Mike Leach noticeably mentioned that incumbent starter Will Rogers will have to "earn" his job over a plethora of signal-callers, including Southern Miss transfer Jack Abraham. "He's one of those guys that's a self-starter when he works and you trip over him in the film room all the time," Leach said of Rogers. "So I mean, that's a good quality. He's got to win his job, too. That's what spring is all about. All the jobs are open, and then they find it out." While no frontrunner has been named, it's presumed Rogers heads into camp with the edge given the final two months of the 2020 season he had. - The Dispatch

Brendan Radley-Hiles is headed to the Pac-12 Conference after three seasons with the Sooners. The Oklahoma defensive back will transfer to Washington, he announced in a tweet late Tuesday. Radley-Hiles, who was a polarizing figure at OU, leaves the program as a three-year starter. His career included 115 tackles, 14 pass breakups, nine tackles for loss, three interceptions, a sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery. The IMG Academy product and Inglewood, California, native primarily served as a nickelback in Lincoln Riley's defense. He came to OU as a five-star prospect and U.S. Army All-American. - Norman Transcript

  02/23/21 - Michael Penix Jr.rSr/2024, Washington, 6-2, 216 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Indiana junior quarterback Mike Penix Jr. declared himself "on schedule if not maybe a little ahead of schedule" in his rehab from his second torn ACL in the span of three years. Penix said he's not running or throwing yet, and it's unlikely he'll take part in any drills when spring practices start March 9 and run through the end of April. "I've been working extremely hard to get back," Penix said. "I've been doing everything I can to go out and just continue to help motivate the team, still be the leader, even though I can't do certain activities. But I've been doing really good progressing every week and I feel myself getting a lot stronger and feeling more comfortable in my body."

Penix stopped short of guaranteeing a return for IU's Sept. 4 opener at Iowa. "Right now, I'm just sticking with the program, more rehab stuff right now," Penix said. "On-the-field stuff will come later. I'm not really worried about that right now. Just make sure I stay focused and doing whatever the trainers are telling me, just making sure I'm staying healthy outside of the facility … making sure there are no setbacks." - Herald Bulletin

In his senior season at Cajon High School in San Bernardino, Calif., Jeremiah Martin recorded an astounding 47 tackles for loss and 30.5 sacks in 16 games, according to MaxPreps. In the three seasons since, the 6-foot-5, 262-pound pass-rusher has played in 32 games for Texas A&M and managed a total of 11 tackles with three tackles for loss and zero sacks. On Tuesday morning, Martin - who has two seasons of eligibility remaining, and will be immediately eligible this fall - officially announced a transfer to UW. - Seattle Times

  01/10/21 - Michael Penix Jr.rSr/2024, Washington, 6-2, 216 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Penix suffered his second torn ACL in the span of three years, but Allen was optimistic about the timeline for his recovery after he underwent surgery the week before Christmas. Penix recovered quickly from his first torn ACL by living in the rehab room. He was throwing by April 2019 after sustaining the injury in October 2018. There are no guarantees as every rehabilitation is different, but it's hard to bet against Penix returning based on his work ethic. How important is Penix? Over the last two seasons, Penix is 11-2 as a starter. Other IU starting quarterbacks went 3-5 during that same span. - Herald Bulletin

  01/02/21 - Patrick OBrienrSr/2022, Washington, 6-4, 220 (DS#31 QB) + More +

Washington's quarterback competition just got a little bit more crowded. Following the offseason departures of graduate student Kevin Thomson, redshirt sophomore Jacob Sirmon and true freshman Ethan Garbers, UW was left with just two scholarship signal callers - redshirt freshman Dylan Morris and incoming freshman Sam Huard - on its 2021 roster. But Thursday, Patrick O'Brien - a 6-foot-5, 235-pound redshirt senior from Colorado State - announced he will make a graduate transfer to Washington for his final season of eligibility.

In four games (and three starts) with the Rams in 2020, the San Juan Capistrano, Calif., product completed 56.3% of his passes and threw for 591 yards with three passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns and two interceptions - while splitting time with redshirt junior Todd Centeio. That's after he completed 62% of his passes and threw for 2,803 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions, while adding two more rushing scores, in 11 games (nine starts) in 2019. - Seattle Times

  01/02/21 - Ryan BowmanrSr/2022, Washington, 6-0, 277 (DS#43 DE) + More +

Ryan Bowman provided a literal and figurative lift for the Huskies on Thursday. Washington's fifth-year senior tweeted a video of the 6-foot, 280-pound outside linebacker successfully squatting 685 pounds, along with the following caption: "All I can think about is going on a rampage with the Dawgs in 2021". When asked if the tweet indicates that Bowman will definitely be back for a sixth season next fall, he responded: "I'll be back 100%." That's bad news for opposing offenses. In 42 career games on Montlake, the Bellevue product and former walk-on has collected 102 total tackles, as well as 25.5 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, four forced fumbles and one interception. In his last full season, he produced 34 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and a pick in 2019. - Seattle Times

  12/31/20 - Will RogersrSr/2025, Washington, 6-2, 207 (DS#17 QB) + More +

True freshman Will Rogers scored his first rushing touchdown of the season and had a 13-yard TD pass to lead Mississippi State past No. 22 Tulsa 28-26 on Thursday in the Armed Forces Bowl. Jo'quavious Marks scored a rushing touchdown on the game's first possession and Emmanuel Forbes returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown for the Bulldogs (4-7), who finished the season with a second straight win in a game played at TCU's Amon G. Carter Stadium in steady rain and temperatures in the upper 30s.

Forbes' third-quarter touchdown was initially called back on an illegal blocking penalty, but the Big Ten Conference officiating crew reversed its ruling to a penalty on Tulsa. Deneric Prince and Corey Taylor II scored rushing touchdowns, Zach Smith had a 15-yard TD pass to Keylon Stokes and Zack Long kicked field goals of 27 and 33 yards for Tulsa (6-3, No. 24 CFP). - AP College Football
