  10/31/21 - Will RogersrSr/2025, Washington, 6-2, 207 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers could do no wrong Saturday night, setting a Southeastern Conference record for completion percentage to help the Bulldogs steamroll their way to another big victory. The sophomore quarterback completed 92% of his passes - 36 of 39 - which is an SEC record for any game with 30-plus attempts. Dillon Johnson ran for two touchdowns and Mississippi State scored 14 points off of four Kentucky turnovers to beat the No. 12 Wildcats 31-17 on Saturday night.

The Bulldogs (5-3, 3-2) came up big with three interceptions of Will Levis and a fumble recovery. They turned a third-quarter fumble and pickoff into consecutive touchdowns to put the game out of reach. "I thought it was huge," Mississippi State coach Mike Leach said. "Kentucky is really about control … maintaining control is something we've struggled with this year, so those obviously helped." Johnson had scoring runs of 9 and 1 yards and finished with 41 yards rushing on 11 carries. Jo'Quavious Marks rushed for 58 yards and a score. Levis was 17 of 28 for 150 yards and the Wildcats (6-2, 4-2) managed just 66 yards rushing in being outgained 438-216. "We didn't match the intensity. I felt like we got pushed around," Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said. "We were not able to run the ball. They ran the ball. They made competitive plays, approached, outcoached us, outplayed us in every area. So overall, just a very deflation defeat." - Mississippi State/AP College Football

Washington's coaches teach the defensive lineman to fall back when they don't feel much resistance. A screen pass is likely coming. Taking those lessons to heart, Tuli Letuligasenoa felt the offensive lineman brush by, so he dropped into coverage. Washington's 300-pound wrecking ball didn't know if he had the ball in his hands until he was being hit, but it turned out to be the play that shifted momentum in the Huskies' favor. Dylan Morris threw two second-half touchdown passes after Letuligasenoa's interception, and Washington extended the nation's longest losing streak to 19 with a 21-16 win over Arizona on Friday night. "They were going on that drive, three, four yards at a time," Washington coach Jimmy Lake said. "That interception by Tuli was a huge charge to the sideline, the offense, the defense, the whole team." Washington (3-4, 2-2 Pac-12) stumbled through the first half and was down nine headed into the fourth quarter.

Letuligasenoa stopped Arizona's bid to pad its lead and Morris took it from there, hitting Terrell Bynum on two long passes to set up two scores. Washington's defense also shifted into a new gear, shutting down Arizona after being hit with big plays earlier. "We were down, but we rolled on for a little bit," said Bynum, who had five catches for 143 yards and a touchdown. Arizona (0-7, 0-4) seemed to be on its way to ending its school-record losing streak, taking a 16-7 lead into the fourth quarter before imploding. - Washington/AP College Football

  10/04/21 - Michael Penix Jr.rSr/2024, Washington, 6-2, 216 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had his first three seasons end early because of injuries. The Hoosiers remain hopeful Penix won't make it four in a row. Coach Tom Allen said Monday that the redshirt junior suffered a separated throwing shoulder during Saturday's loss at Penn State. He is out indefinitely and is being listed as week to week. Jack Tuttle, who replaced Penix for the final two games last season, is expected to take over when the Hoosiers return to action Oct. 16 against No. 11 Michigan State.

The Hoosiers (2-3, 0-2 Big Ten) have a bye this week. The injury occurred when Penn State linebacker Brandon Smith drove Penix into the ground during the third quarter. Since returning from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which ended his 2020 season, Penix was completing just 53.7% of his throws and had thrown seven interceptions and four TD passes. He threw three interceptions in each of Indiana's first two losses, with two returned for touchdowns. - AP College Football

  10/03/21 - Will RogersrSr/2025, Washington, 6-2, 207 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Will Rogers threw for 408 yards and three touchdowns and Nathan Pickering sacked Zach Calzada in the end zone late for a safety in Mississippi State's 26-22 victory over No. 15 Texas A&M on Saturday night. Rogers was sacked twice, and the Bulldogs had two false start penalties that backed them up before Nolan Mccord's 49-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right with about eight minutes to go.

The Aggies cut the lead to two on a 44-yard field goal by Seth Small about two minutes later. Texas A&M (3-2, 0-2 Southeastern Conference) forced a punt to get a chance to take the lead. But Calzada, a backup in his third start, was taken down by Pickering on third down for the safety to extend the lead to 26-22 with about two minutes to go, and the Bulldogs ran out the clock to secure the victory. Makai Polk had 13 receptions for 126 yards and two touchdowns to help Mississippi State (3-2, 1-1) snap a two-game skid. It's the second straight loss for the Aggies after they won their previous 11 games and is a huge blow to a team that entered the season with national championship hopes. - Mississippi State/AP College Football

  09/26/21 - Sean McGrewrSr/2022, Washington, 5-07, 176 (DS#84 RB) + More +

Sean McGrew scored his second touchdown of the game in overtime, Washington's defense forced California's Damien Moore to fumble at the 1-yard line and the Huskies escaped with a 31-24 win over the Golden Bears on Saturday night. The Pac-12 Conference opener ended after Washington linebacker Jackson Sirmon and defensive back Cameron Williams converged on Moore before he reached goal line. Moore was hit hard, the ball popped free and Ryan Bowman pounced on the loose ball, setting off a wild celebration that was briefly muted while the fumble was confirmed by video replay. The 100th matchup between the schools was another wild conclusion to a series that has recently featured close games.

McGrew scored on a 5-yard run in the first half and his 2-yard run in overtime gave the Huskies (2-2, 1-0 Pac-12) the lead. California (1-3, 0-1) looked poised to force a second OT, driving with ease to the Washington 2 before Moore's turnover. Washington's Dylan Morris threw a pair of first-half touchdowns, but the Huskies will lament the fact the game ever got to overtime. They led 21-10 at halftime and ruined several chances in the second half to extend the lead, giving the Golden Bears a chance to rally. California quarterback Chase Garbers was great in the second half, making just one mistake when he was intercepted by Kyler Gordon for the second time early in the fourth quarter. Washington failed to capitalize on the turnover and Garbers' 7-yard run with 2:51 left tied the game at 24-all. Garbers was 30-of-41 passing for 319 yards and two touchdowns. He also added another 71 yards rushing. Moore rushed for 67 yards and had a 26-yard TD catch midway through the third quarter. - Washington/AP College Football

  09/12/21 - Michael Penix Jr.rSr/2024, Washington, 6-2, 216 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Indiana had something to prove Saturday night. The Hoosiers didn't disappoint. Michael Penix Jr. threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score and Indiana took advantage of two special teams touchdowns and a dominant defense to rout Idaho 56-14. For Indiana (1-1, 0-1 Big Ten), it was a big night. Playing in front of the biggest home crowd since Nov. 23 2019, the Hoosiers gave the near-capacity fans plenty to cheer about. Indiana has won 18 of its last 20 home openers, perhaps none more impressively than this one.

The timing couldn't have been better after last week's embarrassing loss at Iowa, either. This time, the Hoosiers cleaned up the mistakes, made all the big plays and never gave the Vandals (1-1) a chance. They took a 21-0 lead after one quarter and made it 35-0 before Idaho recorded a first down. "We were able to bounce back, address some things we needed to address and I think our guys responded in practice and the way we started," Hoosiers coach Tom Allen said. "I thought special teams was special tonight." For Idaho, it was a miserable night. - Indiana/AP College Football

  09/01/21 - Michael Penix Jr.rSr/2024, Washington, 6-2, 216 (DS#5 QB) + More +

After another arduous rehab from surgery to repair a torn ACL, the second in the span of three years, Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is once again ready to line up under center in a season opener. Penix is set to start for the No. 17 Hoosiers on Saturday at No. 18 Iowa (3:30 p.m., Big Ten Network), declaring himself 100% after three weeks of fall camp. "As far as the trust level goes, I trust my knee," Penix said. "I trust that everything is OK. The trainers have been doing a great job of getting me back on the field, and I'm 100% confident that I'm going to have a great season this year." The plan throughout the offseason was to bring Penix along at a methodical pace after suffering the season-ending injury Nov. 28 against Maryland, but he exceeded expectations through every step of his rehab process.

He began throwing routes to his receivers in July, was a camp counselor at the Manning Passing Academy that month and took part in every fall practice. IU offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan said Penix has shook some rust off since the start of fall camp after not practicing in the spring but showed no physical limitations. "From a physical standpoint, he's the same Mike Penix that we've seen here," Sheridan said. "Still has a really strong arm, still moves very well, very instinctual player. I think going against our defense is a challenge each and every day, and I think that's been great for Mike. Just getting back into the live speed of it, the quickness of our defense challenges you in your decision making, in your ball placement, all those types of things." - Herald Bulletin

The only question with Penix is whether or not he would start against Iowa, and according to Allen, Penix's second ACL surgery rehab is right on schedule for him to start against the Hawkeyes. Penix missed the final two games last season, but still threw for 1,645 yards passing through six games, leading the Big Ten with 274.2 yards passing per game and finishing off the season with a pass efficiency rating of 136.5. As a starter at Indiana, Penix is 10-2 and was one of the 17 finalists for the Davey O'Brien award last year and has made the 2021 watch list for the award. During his freshman year in 2019, Penix set a school record high in completion percentage of 68.8 percent, which is sixth in Big Ten history. - The Gazette

As Indiana junior quarterback Michael Penix Jr. enters a critical 2021 season for the Hoosiers, he took advantage of a development opportunity that could impact IU's entire offense. Penix was one of a handful of college quarterbacks who were invited and served as camp counselors last month at the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, Louisiana.

Now Penix is looking to pass along lessons learned from the First Family of NFL quarterbacks. Peyton Manning, of course, remains an Indianapolis sports icon, leading the Colts to a Super Bowl win in 2007 and another Super Bowl appearance in 2010, while Eli Manning led the New York Giants to two Super Bowl wins. "The main thing that Peyton and Eli were saying, just control what you can control," Penix said. "We've got to make sure we work on everything until we can't get it wrong. That's one thing Peyton said, as well. He said whenever he used to do, like, routes and stuff with his receivers, he said they didn't run the route until they got it right. They ran it until they couldn't get it wrong, and that's something that I really took back with me." - Herald Bulletin

  08/27/21 - Will RogersrSr/2025, Washington, 6-2, 207 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Mississippi State coach Mike Leach hedged ever-so slightly, but all signs point to Will Rogers leading the Bulldogs onto the field as the starting quarterback in the season opener against Louisiana Tech. Leach said after Wednesday's practice that if "we were to play today, it would be Will." When asked whether another quarterback could supplant Rogers as the starter by the time Louisiana Tech visits Davis Wade Stadium on Sept. 4, Leach said: "It's hard to tell. Difficult to say. We'll see." Much of Leach's decision to choose Rogers as the quarterback for the coach's air raid offense comes down to Rogers' consistency, Leach said, edging him over the newcomers competing for the job. Rogers started six games last season, becoming the first quarterback in program history to record 30 or more completions in three straight games.

Rogers finished with 1,976 passing yards with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions - although four of those giveaways came during his first three games, where he came off the bench to replace K.J. Costello. Once Costello suffered an injury against Alabama, Rogers took over the starting job on a permanent basis. As the starter, Rogers threw 10 touchdowns compared to three interceptions, and he averaged 227.7 yards per game through the air to go with a 69.2 completion percentage. - The Clarion Ledger

Allen said starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. remains on track to start the season opener Sept. 4 at Iowa. Penix worked with the first-team offense Wednesday, connecting on throws to receivers Javon Swinton and Jacolby Hewitt in traffic. "The progress has been good," Allen said. "I feel like as you go through it, every fall camp is this way, it's still about timing, working with the receivers. Obviously, he's been throwing all summer, but timing when you have the whole offense there and the routes and the different things that you do and the routes on air, and the skelly and then the team periods, and then obviously we just continue to develop him in between those periods." Allen said Penix has been staying after practice to get extra work in with receivers. "More than anything what stuck out to me is his leadership growth and being able to command everything and correct and challenge and call guys out in a positive way, and they need that," Allen said. "So I think he's definitely in a good place." - Herald Bulletin
