  10/19/19 - Joe ReedSr/2020, Virginia, 6-0, 224 (DS#19 WR) + More +

Bronco Mendenhall was at a loss to explain how Virginia's game against Duke turned into a blowout. So were his players. "I thought it would come down to the last possession, so holy cow," Mendenhall said. Bryce Perkins ran for three touchdowns and Wayne Taulapapa ran for two as the Cavaliers rolled, 48-14, their fifth consecutive victory against the Blue Devils. Virginia forced five turnovers and has forced 15 in the last four meetings between the rivals. "Maybe we're just in the right place at the right time when we play Duke," defensive end Eli Hanback said.

Hanback had one of three fumble recoveries for the Cavaliers, who scored 20 points off those takeaways. Joe Reed also returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, his second scoring return of the season and program-record fifth of his career, and Brian Delaney kicked two field goals a week after his three field goals accounted for Virginia's only points in a 17-9 loss at Miami. This time, Virginia had no issues once inside the opponent's 25, which Taulapapa credited with a "change of mindset." "Bryce can't do everything. He's amazing in every single way, but he can't do this by himself," Taulapapa said. The Cavaliers (5-2, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), whose loss a week ago dropped them into a tie with Duke and North Carolina in the ACC's Coastal Division, regained the upper hand on the backs of a defense that set them up for four scoring drives of 34 yards or fewer. - Virginia/AP College Football

  10/14/19 - Bryce HallSr/2020, Virginia, 6-1, 202 (DS#11 CB) + More +

Virginia All-American cornerback Bryce Hall will miss the rest of the season following left ankle surgery. Hall was injured while covering a punt in the second quarter of the Cavaliers' 17-9 loss at Miami on Friday night. The senior had surgery Sunday, and coach Bronco Mendenhall says the recovery timeline is uncertain. Hall last year led the nation is pass breakups with 22 and tied for the lead with 24 passes defended. Mendenhall calls Hall an "amazing" person who has had a "huge impact" on the program. The coach says junior De'Vante Cross will start in Hall's absence. Cross came to Virginia as a quarterback and has also played wide receiver and safety for the Cavaliers. - AP College Football

Virginia preseason All-American cornerback Bryce Hall suffered an injury to his lower left leg and was taken off the field on a cart during the second quarter of the 20th-ranked Cavaliers' game at Miami on Friday night. Hall was injured while on punt coverage. An air cast was placed around the leg. All of Virginia's players gathered around the cart just before Hall was taken off the field, and several Miami players jogged over to offer him well-wishes. Hall was making his 39th consecutive start, which the Cavaliers said was the longest such streak in the nation among cornerbacks. He led all FBS players with 22 pass breakups last season, then elected to return for his senior year. - AP College Football

Bronco Mendenhall isn't big on fiery halftime speeches. So, with his team trailing visiting Old Dominion by 10 points at halftime, the Virginia coach's message to his players was simple. "All I said was, 'Now that that's over, we'll start playing,'" Mendenhall said. His defense certainly did. Linebacker Zane Zandier returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown, part of a dominant defensive second half, as the 21st-ranked Cavaliers rallied past the Monarchs 28-17 on Saturday night to remain undefeated. Old Dominion's failed fourth-down try in its own territory set up Virginia's go-ahead score, a 7-yard touchdown run by Wayne Taulapapa with 10:16 to go for a 21-17 edge.

After the game, Monarchs coach Bobby Wilder defended the decision. "We came in here to win and that is how we tried to play today," he said. The Cavaliers (4-0) are off to their best start since opening 5-0 in 2004. The Monarchs (1-2) have lost two in a row, both to in-state ACC opponents. They lost to Virginia Tech two weekends ago, a year after stunning the Hokies in Norfolk. Linebacker Charles Snowden finished with a game-high 15 tackles, including two of the five sacks on Old Dominion quarterback Stone Smartt. He echoed Mendenhall's sentiment that the halftime mood was more about getting reset than getting motivated. "Just kind of gathering ourselves in the locker room, settling down, taking a breather," Snowden said. "Wasn't a lot of 'rah-rah.' It was just, 'go out and play the way we know we can play." - Virginia/AP College Football

Bryce Perkins threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third and Virginia drubbed William & Mary 52-17 on Friday night. Joe Reed caught a 40-yard touchdown pass and returned a kickoff 100 yards for the Cavaliers (2-0), who spoiled the return of former coach Mike London, who now is coaching the Tribe. Virginia led 21-0 by the end of the first quarter and 35-3 at halftime. William & Mary (1-1) got its only points against Virginia's first team after recovering a muffed punt at the Cavaliers' 13 yard-line in the second quarter. The Tribe began the fourth quarter trailing 45-10 and having gained just 75 yards. The Tribe intercepted Perkins twice, ending his string of 145 passes without an interception, and got another pick when Arman Jones picked off backup Brennan Armstrong and returned it 47 yards for a score.

William & Mary has forced four turnovers in both of its games. Perkins' other touchdown pass was a 15-yarder to transfer Terrell Chatman, his roommate when they started their careers at Arizona State. The Cavaliers also scored on Nick Grant's 85-yard interception return and freshman Mike Hollins' 9-yard run on his first college attempt. Hollins later added a 1-yard scoring run. - AP College Football

  08/31/19 - Bryce PerkinsrSr/2020, Virginia, 6-2, 215 (DS#22 QB) + More +

Down a point at the half on the road against a team it knew it had to beat if it wanted to legitimately contend in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall wondered how his players would react. The answer may have provided the foundation for what the Cavaliers hope is a breakout season. Virginia overwhelmed Pittsburgh in the second half of a 30-14 victory on Saturday night, a performance in which the Cavaliers showed Mendenhall how far they've come in his three-plus years on the job. "The program just looks more seasoned," Mendenhall said. "There weren't the wild ups and the wild downs and the crazy miscues. It just looks like we are maturing, a more seasoned program."

One that finally pushed back after largely getting pushed around by the Panthers since Pitt joined the ACC in 2013. The Panthers won five of the previous six meetings largely by manhandling Virginia when it mattered. Not this time. The Cavaliers sacked Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett four times, picked him off twice and rarely let him get comfortable. "We knew each game was going to come down to who was more physical, who wants it more," Virginia quarterback Bryce Perkins said. "That's exactly what happened. The last few years, they were more physical than us. I think this year we made an emphasis to be more physical than them." Perkins threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns and the Cavaliers (1-0, 1-0 ACC) took advantage of a series of Panther miscues to win in Pittsburgh for the first time in program history. - AP College Football

  08/31/19 - Shane SimpsonrSr/2021, Virginia, 5-08, 198 (DS#42 RB) + More +

Shane Simpson accounted for three scores that included a 4-yard touchdown run with 1:27 left to push Towson past The Citadel 28-21 on Saturday in a season opener. The Cadets had just taken their only lead, 21-20 with 3:31 remaining, when Brandon Rainey tossed a 9-yard touchdown pass to Raleigh Webb in the back of the end zone. Towson's Tom Flacco answered on the next possession, completing three straight passes and breaking loose for a 25-yard run before Simpson scored to cap the six-play drive. On the next series, Coby Tippett intercepted Rainey's pass attempt on The Citadel's first play from scrimmage to seal the victory for the Tigers.

Simpson caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Flacco in the first quarter and also had a 45-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter that pushed the Tigers' lead to 17-7. Simpson finished with 74 yards rushing and had four catches for 37 yards. Flacco was 21-of-36 passing for 328 yards. Rainey had 166 yards rushing on 32 carries and completed three of four pass attempts for 24 yards. The Tigers, who last season finished 7-5 and earned a FCS playoff berth for the first time since 2013, entered the game ranked No. 11 in the FCS STATS preseason poll. They hadn't been ranked in the preseason poll since 2008. - AP College Football
