Jaylan Adams hit Da'Quan Felton for the winning touchdown with five seconds remaining and Norfolk State defeated Morgan State 24-21 after blowing a 17-point lead on Saturday. The Spartans scored the game's first 17 points then eventually fell behind 21-17 when Morgan State's Alfonzo Graham bolted 51-yards for a touchdown with 1:53 remaining in the fourth quarter. Norfolk State then drove 66 yards in nine plays, capped by backup quarterback Adams's 3-yard pass to Felton for the Spartans' first win of the season. It was the only pass attempt of the game for Adams.

Norfolk State built its early lead on a 34-yard run by Kevon King, a 1-yard run by starting quarterback Otto Kuhns and a 29-yard field goal by Grandin Willcox. Morgan State's Carson Baker hit Tyler Wilkins with a 35-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the first half and Norfolk State led 17-7. After a scoreless third quarter, Baker scored on a 13-yard run midway through the fourth prior to Graham's long run that gave the Bears their only lead of the game. Kuhns completed 25 of 34 passes for 288 yards for the Spartans (1-5, 1-0 MEAC). Graham had 203 yards on 23 carries for the Bears (2-3, 0-1). - AP College Football

Bhayshul Tuten ran for 114 yards and two first-quarter touchdowns to carry North Carolina A&T to a 24-13 win over Bryant in the Big South Conference opener Saturday night. After losing its first three games to start the season, North Carolina A&T has won back-to-back games and is in first place in conference play. Bryant (1-4, 0-1) scored 13 straight points to get within a point, 14-13, with 6:41 left in the third quarter, but after the Aggies' Andrew Brown kicked a 37-yard field goal to push the lead to 17-13, they picked off a pair of Zevi Eckhaus passes in the fourth quarter. Jalen Fowler fired a 25-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Berkhalter early in the fourth quarter to set the final margin. Fowler was 11-of-17 passing for 110 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Berkhalter caught five passes for 63 yards. Eckhaus had 213 yards on 19-of-37 passing but was intercepted four times. Landon Ruggieri caught six passes for 110 yards. - AP College Football

Bhayshul Tuten had 12 carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns and added a 15-yard TD reception to help N.C. A&T beat South Carolina State 41-27 Saturday night. N.C. A&T, which has won seven consecutive games against the Bulldog, snapped a four-game losing streak overall, dating to last season, and avoided their first five-game skid since 2010. Jalen Fowler completed 8 of 14 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions for the Aggies (1-3). Tuten scored on a 19-yard run late in the first quarter and his TD reception with 40 seconds left in the half gave N.C. A&T the lead for good at 14-13. After a false start on the first play of the ensuing drive, S.C. State (1-2) took a knee on three consecutive downs before Amonte Jones returned a punt 11 yards to the Bulldogs 32 with 5 seconds left in the half and Andrew Brown kicked a 49-yard field goal as time expired.

South Carolina State went three-and-out on the opening drive of the second half and a 27-yard punt return by Jones - as well as a personal foul on the Bulldogs - and on the next play from scrimmage Tuten raced 38 yards for a touchdown to make it 24-13. The Bulldogs again went three-and-out before Wesley Graves scored on a 12-yard run to give the Aggies a 31-13 lead with 10 minutes left in the third quarter. Corey Fields Jr. completed 26 of 49 passes for 316 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions for S.C. State. The Bulldogs finished with 12 yards rushing on 22 carries. N.C. A&T has won seven consecutive games against the Bulldogs.   Grant Wells threw for 314 yards and two touchdowns to lead Virginia Tech to a 27-7 victory over Wofford on Saturday. Wells completed 26 of 35 passes and the defense for the Hokies (2-1) dominated throughout, handing the Terriers (0-3) their 13th consecutive loss. Virginia Tech put the game away with 17 second-quarter points, which was more than enough against a Wofford offense that had not scored this season until Nathan Walker's 3-yard touchdown run with 9:34 left in the game. The Hokies' second-quarter touchdowns came on a 1-yard run by Jalen Holston and an 11-yard pass from Wells to Jadan Blue. Wells later added a 27-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Duke. Wells, who threw four interceptions in Virginia Tech's season-opening loss to Old Dominion, has not thrown an interception in the Hokies' past two games. Wofford, which has been outscored 84-7 this season, ventured into Virginia Tech territory once and finished with just 199 yards of offense. - Virginia Tech/AP College Football

Grant Wells threw for 140 yards and a touchdown to lift Virginia Tech to a 27-10 victory over Boston College on Saturday. The Hokies (1-1, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) also got a strong performance from their defense, holding the Eagles (0-2, 0-1 ACC) to 155 yards and sacking BC quarterback Phil Jurkovec six times. The win marked the first for first-year Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry, a former Hokie graduate assistant in the mid-1990s.

Virginia Tech cornerback Armani Chatman intercepted Jurkovec on the second play of the game to set up Jalen Holston's 1-yard run that gave the Hokies a lead they would not relinquish. BC cut Virginia Tech's lead to 17-10 in the third quarter on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Jurkovec to Jaden Williams, but the Hokies immediately answered, scoring on a 2-yard pass from Wells to Kaleb Smith for a two-touchdown advantage. Jurkovec finished with 135 yards passing to lead BC. - Virginia Tech/AP College Football

Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry announced Wednesday that tight end Benji Gosnell will miss the 2022 season. "He's got a bright future here," Pry said. Pry said the injury wasn't related to the torn ACL and MCL Gosnell suffered as a senior at Carroll County High School, but declined to provide any other specifics. That injury kept the tight end sidelined throughout spring camp and made him a strong candidate to redshirt this season. Tech signed two other tight ends in the 2022 class - Harrison Saint Germain and Dae'Quan Wright - to complement veterans Drake De Iuliis and Nick Gallo. - Roanoke Times

When two quarterbacks transferred to Virginia Tech in the offseason, there was an immediate question for the Hokies as to which would beat out the other for the starting job. As the offseason progressed, that answer became very clear. According to multiple reports on Wednesday, Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry named former Marshall quarterback Grant Wells the starter for the team's season opener against Old Dominion. Wells, who announced his decision to transfer from the Thundering Herd program over the winter, was given the nod over Jason Brown, a redshirt senior who joined the Hokies from South Carolina.

A product of George Washington High School in Charleston, Wells started in 23 games over two seasons with the Herd, going 14-9 in those games while earning All-Conference USA accolades in each season, throwing for over 5,600 yards, 34 touchdowns and 23 interceptions along the way. The Hokies kick off their season on Friday, Sept. 2 at Old Dominion. It will be Wells' second career start against the Monarchs. In Marshall's 20-13 overtime win over ODU in 2021, Wells completed 30 of 46 passes for 299 yards, two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. - Charleston Gazette

Virginia Tech running back Jalen Holston is making sure the new staff knows he doesn't want to spend his farewell tour on the sidelines. Holston made a strong first impression on first-year coach Brent Pry as one of the veteran leaders during winter workouts and spring camp. He's happy to mentor the team's many young backs, but he's spent the first two weeks of fall camp pushing to land atop the depth chart for the Hokies' season opener against Old Dominion on Sept. 2. "That's a competitive room," Pry said. "The first thing I want to say is, all those guys have done well, but Holston has really impressed me this summer and [at] this camp. He's been very consistent, which is something we were asking and looking for."

This is the fourth straight season Holston has been in contention for the starting job. He was used sparingly last year after getting 37 carries in the first four weeks of the season. He went seven straight games without a carry and ended the year with 52 carries for 199 yards last season (3.8 yards per carry). His season highs came in the opener against North Carolina with 13 carries for 49 yards (3.8 yards per carry). - Roanoke Times

During Virginia Tech's run of 27 consecutive bowl appearances, four Hokies quarterbacks earned conference offensive player of the year honors: Jim Druckenmiller, Michael Vick, Bryan Randall and Tyrod Taylor. Maurice DeShazo, Marcus Vick, Logan Thomas, Josh Jackson and Jerod Evans were pretty darn good as well. None averaged as many passing yards per game as Tech's presumptive 2022 starter did last season. Caveats aplenty surround Grant Wells' numbers at Marshall last year, but nonetheless they heighten curiosity regarding the Hokies' offense as they start the Brent Pry era. Wells transferred to Virginia Tech after throwing for 3,535 yards last season, a 271.9 per-game average that ranked 16th nationally and second in Conference USA. The only Hokie ever to average more passing yards was Don Strock in 1972 at 294.8.

Yes, it's been a minute, or more precisely, half a century. Now about those caveats. Pry is a rookie head coach with a defensive background, and his offensive coordinator, Tyler Bowen, was a part of run-first attacks at Penn State and Fordham. Conversely, Marshall threw on 52.2% of its snaps last season, a ratio that would be rare in Blacksburg. How rare? Well, the last year in which Virginia Tech attempted more passes than rushes was Strock's record season of '72, when by the way, his backup was Super Bowl champion coach Bruce Arians. The same trends apply to sheer number of passes. - Roanoke Times

Virginia Tech quarterback turned tight end Connor Blumirck is committed to making his latest position change work. Blumrick went from quarterback to running back to tight end while at Texas A&M then started that cycle over again when he got to Blacksburg. He played quarterback for the Hokies last season going from a wildcat type change of pace guy to starting the finale in the Pinstripe Bowl. He finished the season with 152 passing yards (51.6%) with two touchdowns and ran the ball 56 times for 242 yards (4.3 yards per carry) with three touchdowns. Blumrick was one of the first players to catch Brent Pry's eye during winter workouts. Pry saw an intriguing combination of size - Blumrick is listed at 6-foot-5 - and speed on a team lacking proven playmakers.

The new staff moved Blumrick to tight end just a week into spring camp, and are hoping to reap the rewards from that decision this fall. "I'm excited about Connor," Tech offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen said, after Friday's practice. "Connor's working at receiver and tight end and in the backfield, a lot of different places. He's got a unique skill set. He's played receiver beforeā€¦.So it's been fun to figure out how to utilize him and package him in different personnel groupings." Blumrick has high hopes as well. While he only played a total of 14 offensive snaps in four seasons (he also played 233 snaps on special teams) with Texas A&M, he's hoping the coaching staff has the confidence to give him more consistent game reps. "I want to be in as many plays as coach will put me in," Blumrick said. "I want to be involved in the run game and pass game, whatever I can do to help the team." - Roanoke Times

Virginia Tech linebacker Alan Tisdale has played in 35 career games and made 18 starts, but second-year linebacker Jaden Keller is pushing him hard for playing time. The 6-foot-3, 216-pounder defender out of Tennessee maintained his redshirt last year playing in four games. Keller was already on Pry's list of up-and-coming defenders after spring camp, but he might arrive sooner rather than later thanks to his dedication in the weight room and athleticism. "Right now he's certainly in competition for the [weak side] linebacker spot," Pry said. "He's a beautiful looking young man. He's really had a great summer just changing his body, looking lean and fast. He plays, when he knows what he's doing, he plays as fast as anybody on the defense. He's got a real shot." - Richmond Times-Dispatch
