  12/15/22 - Devaughn VelerJr/2024, Utah + More +

Is Devaughn Vele thinking about returning? On Nov. 12, Devaughn Vele took part in Senior Night festivities at Rice-Eccles Stadium. He said days later he was leaning towards leaving Utah with two years of eligibility remaining. On Tuesday, Vele, who at the time cited his advanced college football age of 24 and the desire to have a legitimate shot at the NFL, sounds like he may be changing his mind. "I can say I have been thinking about it a lot lately, and while it isn't final, I have been leaning more towards staying another year," Vele said. "Trying to get better film out there and be able to three-peat with these guys.

"We have a lot of good players coming in, but I know I am getting older. It's a part of life, but this program is special and I want to be a part of it. While it's not set in stone, I have been thinking about it a lot lately, and it's starting to lean towards staying another year, but you'll have my answer by the time the bowl game comes." Vele leads all Utes wide receivers in catches (50), receiving yards (595), and receiving touchdowns (5), but he is correct in that his film is limited. Before this season, the fourth-year sophomore, who has served as Utah's punt returner this fall, had just 25 catches and one touchdown in 23 career games. - Salt Lake Tribune

To the surprise of no one, Clark Phillips III will not be returning to the University of Utah next fall. A third-year sophomore All-American at cornerback, Phillips III on Monday morning declared for the 2023 NFL Draft. That brings a close to a college career that began with a ton of hype and promise, with the Lakewood, Calif. native following through on all of it. Phillips III is projected as a potential first-round selection when the draft begins on April 27 in Kansas City. Phillips III's father, Clark Phillips Sr., and a Utah athletic department spokesperson both told The Salt Lake Tribune behind the announcement that he will not play in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 2 vs. Penn State. - Salt Lake Tribune

The University of Utah will be missing its top receiving target for its biggest game of the season. Dalton Kincaid, a fifth-year senior tight end who morphed into Cam Rising's preferred target this fall, announced on Sunday evening that he will not play in the Rose Bowl vs. Penn State on Jan. 2. Citing an injury, Kincaid said on social media that his plan is to rehab and prepare for the NFL draft.

Kincaid leads Utah in catches (70), receiving yards (890) and receiving touchdowns (8). He began his career at the University of of San Diego, where he became an FCS All-American, then flourished after making the transition to Power Five football. In 31 career games, Kincaid had 107 catches for 1,414 yards and 16 touchdowns for an offense that generally uses its tight ends as legitimate pass-catching options. - Salt Lake Tribune

The two-time All-Pac-12 selection is tied for the most interceptions this season among Power Five players (6), also tying for second overall in the country.   12/09/22 - Levani DamunirSr/2025, Utah + More +

Levani Damuni is returning to the Beehive State. The Ridgeline High product, who played linebacker for four seasons at Stanford, announced on social media Wednesday that he is transferring to play for the Utah Utes. Damuni announced on Dec. 2 that he was entering the transfer portal, becoming one of many Stanford players to do so following the sudden resignation of head coach David Shaw following the team's loss in its regular season finale against BYU. That the 6-foot-2, 242-pound Damuni is returning to Utah isn't altogether surprising, although his school of choice could be seen as such, as his father Waqa has worked in the Utah State athletic department for many years and his uncle Jack and cousin Raider are part of the BYU football program. - Deseret News

2022 JIM THORPE AWARD FINALIST (OUTSTANDING DEFENSIVE BACK): Clark Phillips III, Utah,...This season, the Lakewood, Calif., native has 23 tackles (2.0 TFL, 1.0 sack) and is tied for the national lead with six interceptions with his two pick-sixes being the second-most in the country. His eleven passes defended (6 INT, 5 PBUs) all came in Pac-12 play, tying for first in the league. He earned national praise for his performance against Oregon State, notching three interceptions, including a 38-yard pick-six. His three picks against the Beavers is tied for the most in a game by a Power Five player this season, also leading the Pac-12 this season in single-game interceptions.

After his three interception and three-tackle performance against Oregon State, he put up two stops and an 80-yard interception return for a touchdown at UCLA. His 142 interception return yards this season ranks fourth nationally. Phillips also recorded a season-high four tackles in Utah's win over USC, grabbing his first-career sack for a loss of eight yards while contributing two pass breakups. Phillips has started in every single game he has appeared in (30), holding nine career interceptions with four pick-sixes. He is one of just two Power Five players with four career interceptions returned for touchdowns, and is the only active player in the Pac-12 that has reached that feat. - Utah Football

  12/04/22 - Levani DamunirSr/2025, Utah + More +

As Stanford's search for longtime head coach David Shaw's replacement continues, many Cardinal players are preparing to leave the program. On Friday, Stanford's lead tackler Levani Damuni announced he will put his name in the transfer portal as a graduate transfer, becoming the seventh of eight Cardinal upperclassmen to announce transfer plans in the last week. It's a continuation of a startling trend on The Farm, with loosened restrictions and punishments for transferring leading to more player movement after each season. According to 247 Sports, seven players transferred to other schools after the 2021 season, which followed up two players leaving after the 2020 COVID season and 11 players leaving after 2019. Damuni, a linebacker who was a captain for the Cardinal this season, had 76 total tackles in 12 games, 25 more than the next-closest teammate. The senior also had 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, two forced fumbles and an interception.

The new 45-day window for football players to enter their name in the transfer portal begins on Monday, Dec. 5. The Cardinal will have at least eight players from their 2022 roster put their names in the portal, and it's possible that number could continue to rise. Players can also elect to not transfer even after putting their names in the portal. In addition to Damuni, seven other upperclassmen who will graduate from Stanford announced their intent earlier this week to transfer to a new school: tight end Bradley Archer, wide receiver Colby Bowman, defensive lineman Stephen Herron, offensive linemen Jake Hornibrook and Drake Nugent (who announced his decision after Damuni on Friday), safety Jonathan McGill and punter Ryan Sanborn. Freshman running back Arlen Harris also said he is entering the portal, though he has not been with the team since October. - Oakland Tribune

No. 12 Utah pounded a limping, bloodied Caleb Williams and roared past No. 4 Southern California 47-24 on Friday night to win the Pac-12 Championship and put USC's College Football Playoff hopes in doubt. The loss by the Trojans (11-2) could open the way for Ohio State (11-1) to take their spot in the playoffs. USC is fourth in the CFP rankings, the Buckeyes are one step behind. Ohio State had to be Utah's biggest fan. The Buckeyes move up in playoff consideration, with 12-0 Michigan at No. 2 with the Big Ten championship game on Saturday, that would give the Big Ten conference two playoff teams for the first time. It also would extend the Pac-12's playoff drought - Washington in 2017 is the last team from that conference to make the playoffs. Utah (10-3) is heading to the Rose Bowl, but the Utes already were going there regardless of the outcome of the title game. They are responsible for USC's only losses, having edged the Trojans 43-42 on Oct. 15 in Salt Lake City. The Utes rolled up 533 yards of offense in the rematch, and Cam Rising passed for 310 yards and three touchdowns.

Williams threw for 363 yards and three TDs. He entered the game as the leading Heisman Trophy candidate, but wasn't the same after getting injured in the first quarter. The Trojans looked as if they were going to run away with the game, taking a 17-3 lead early in the second quarter behind some stellar play by Williams. He appeared to hurt his left knee or leg in the first quarter on a 59-yard run in which he took a big hit at the end, and he suffered a bad cut on the pinky finger of his throwing hand. He spent most of the game limping, and wasn't the same after a sterling first quarter in which the Trojans outgained Utah in total yards 194-70, and Williams had both touchdown passes. After USC failed to pick up a fourth-and-8 from Utah's 37-yard line, the Utes scored two touchdowns in the final 3:55 of the first half, and suddenly the game was tied at 17. Instead of a rout, the game was beginning to look like the shootout the Utes won in October. The game took on that tone at times in the second half, but USC had no answer for how to slow down Utah, which outscored the Trojans 44-7 in overcoming that two-touchdown deficit. - Utah/AP College Football

Utah turned in one of its most dominant road performances in a 63-21 win at Colorado. The 63 points tied for the Utes' most in a road conference game since at least 2000. They had 63 at San Diego State in 2008 when they were in the Mountain West. Utah's 662 total yards against the Buffaloes were its most in any game since 2004 and third all-time, and its 9.9 yards per play were its most against an FBS opponent since at least 2000, according to Sportradar. - AP College Football

  11/28/22 - Tavion ThomasrJr/2023, Utah + More +

Tavion Thomas has played his last game at the University of Utah. Citing a toe injury suffered in the Utes' 20-17 loss at the University of Oregon, the fifth-year junior running back announced on Twitter Friday afternoon that he will end his college career early, instead opting to focus on the East-West Shrine Bowl on Feb. 2 and the NFL draft in April. The East-West Shrine Bowl, an all-star game for seniors, announced on Wednesday that Thomas had accepted an invitation. Thomas is a draft-eligible fifth-year junior, who Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham had already said earlier this month would not be returning in 2023.

Thomas will not play in Saturday's regular-season finale at Colorado (2 p.m., Pac-12 Networks), nor will he play in a bowl game or the Pac-12 championship game, should the Utes get there. "Unfortunately, I injured my toe in our previous game," Thomas said in the tweet. "Due to this, I am declaring for the NFL Draft and spending my time rehabbing and training for this next step in my football journey. "I look forward to getting back and dominating in the Shrine Game." His aunt died days before the Utes hosted San Diego State on Sept. 17. Thomas took that especially hard given his aunt raised him, his two siblings and, as Thomas later noted, a total of 13 children in his native Dayton, Ohio. As the following week unfolded and Utah began preparing to face Arizona State in Tempe on Sept. 24, Thomas, with Whittingham's support, was able to get back to Dayton for a couple of days to be with his family. What exactly transpired between his aunt's death, the quick trip to Dayton, and the Arizona State game remains unclear. - Salt Lake Tribune
