  09/06/22 - Jalen CatalonrSr/2025, UNLV + More +

Coach Sam Pittman provided no concrete updates on injured defensive backs Myles Slusher and Jalen Catalon on Saturday night. Slusher left the field with his right arm and shoulder being held by training staff after crashing into 6-5, 255-pound tight end Leonard Taylor on a 1-yard loss with 3:21 left in the second quarter. He was replaced by Jayden Johnson and Trent Gordon the rest of the game. Catalon appeared to injure his right shoulder while trying to tackle quarterback Ben Bryant in the backfield early in the third quarter.

The play did not appear to feature hard contact. Catalon came back after a period of tests and observation in the training room with ice on his right shoulder but he later removed it. "I was nervous about him there for a minute," Pittman said of Slusher being down for a while. "But he's going to be fine, just wasn't able to come back today. I don't know about Catalon, to be honest with you. I really don't." Latavious Brini replaced Catalon to join safety Simeon Blair. "To us it was just next man up," Blair said of losing Catalon. "I mean, we do a lot of rotating, so I might be in there with Brini in practice all the time. It's not nothing new to me to play with Brini. - Northwest Arkansas Times

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 72. Tony Grimes, CB, North Carolina, Junior. Notable 2021 stat: 47 tackles (36 solo). Last year's ranking: 80. Grimes was supposed to still be in high school when he first stepped onto the field for North Carolina in 2020. After reclassifying during the COVID-19 pandemic that shut down high school football in his home state of Virginia, Grimes quickly developed into one of the ACC's most gifted corners as a true freshman. The 2021 season saw some regression -- no TDs allowed in 2020, four in 2021 -- but he still held opposing QBs to less than 50% completions while breaking up nine passes. - ESPN.com

  08/05/22 - Brennon ScottrSr/2025, UNLV + More +

Sometimes it seems like UNLV football can't catch a break, especially on the defensive side of the ball. This offseason got off to a bad start when the team's best player, linebacker Jacoby Windmon, transferred to Michigan State, and the situation got worse on Monday with news that the team could be without up-and-coming linebacker Brennon Scott for the foreseeable future. Scott, a redshirt sophomore, suffered a knee injury in spring practice and has missed the first three days of training camp.

Head coach Marcus Arroyo steered clear of categorizing Scott's status on Monday, but it seems as though the promising sophomore might be out until 2023. "Unfortunately, he's out right now," Arroyo said. "His return to play is yet to be determined, but he's got a pretty serious injury that unfortunately occurred for us. He's going to be missed, but he's still a big moral piece of this team." Scott was one of the headliners of Marcus Arroyo's first recruiting class in 2020. A three-star prospect out of Dallas, Scott chose UNLV over Kansas, Arizona, Arizona State, USC and Texas. He redshirted during the pandemic season in 2020, then came on strong as a freshman in 2021. Scott's playing time increased as the campaign went on. In his first five games, he compiled 3.0 tackles for loss and 1.0 sacks; in his final five contests, Scott racked up 6.5 TFLs and 3.0 sacks. - Las Vegas Sun

He already earned his bachelor's degree in management from UNLV and is pursuing a certificate in college sports leadership. Created just a few years ago, the Mannelly Award went to Pitt's Cal Adomitis in 2021, Alabama's Thomas Fletcher in 2020 and Notre Dame's John Shannon in 2019. It benefits Bernie's Book Bank, a non-profit organization located in Lake Bluff, Illinois. The 10 semifinalists will be announced November 14 and those names will be narrowed to three finalists November 28 with this year's winner revealed December 10. - UNLV Football
