  07/27/22 - Austin AjiakerSr/2023, UNLV + More +

On the field, Austin Ajiake is a heat-seeking linebacker. Off the field, he got emotional when he cut his daughter's umbilical cord, knows all the variations of the "Baby Shark" and "Cocomelon" songs, and dropped to the Oahu sand to propose to his fiancee. "I've got two personalities," Ajiake said. "I know when to turn it on and when to turn it off. Seeing people in different-colored jerseys, it kind of does something to my brain and makes me want to go." - Honolulu Advertiser

  07/26/22 - Adam Plant Jr.Sr/2023, UNLV + More +

In a very expected development at Mountain West football media days, the conference released its preseason All-MWC team on Thursday, and no UNLV players made the cut. It marks the second straight year that the Scarlet and Gray have no representation on the preseason squad. UNLV went 2-10 last year and placed one player on the 2021 All-Mountain West team: running back Charles Williams, who ran for 1,261 yards and 15 touchdowns. Williams has since graduated. The team was voted on by the league's local media contingent. Speaking at media day, UNLV senior linebacker Austin Ajiake reacted to the news. "Do I feel like we have players that should have been on? Yeah, for sure," Ajiake said. "Are we upset about it? Nah. We see those lists and it's cool, the recognition is cool, but at the same time that's not really what I play for. It's just a bonus. I know what I can do, I know what me and my teammates are capable of doing this year." - Las Vegas Sun

  07/25/22 - Gary QuarlesrSr/2024, UNLV + More +

2022 PRESEASON ALL-SWAC FIRST TEAM: Running Back: Gary Quarles, Alabama A&M,...Quarles delivered an impressive 2021 campaign, leading the SWAC in yards per game (95.5) and rushing touchdowns (10) while finishing third in the league in yards (955), accomplishing the latter in just 10 games. Standing just 5-6, Quarles hardly left the field and was involved in all aspects of the offense, from handing the ball, blocking and the receiving game. Toting the ball 205 times (along with 21 catches for 224 yards), he accounted for 1,179 all-purpose yards and topped the 100-yard plateau five times on the year. Those would include the first three games with 129 yards and a touchdown against South Carolina State (9/4), 101 and a score at Bethune-Cookman (9/16) in a driving rain storm and a career-high 164 yards and a pair of TDs against Tuskegee (9/25) in Mobile, Alabama. - Alabama A&M Football

  07/25/22 - Jalen CatalonrSr/2025, UNLV + More +

Arkansas has been picked to finish third in the SEC West in 2022 by media members who cover the conference. The Razorbacks are slotted to finish behind projected division and overall conference champion Alabama and Texas A&M in a poll released Friday at SEC Media Days in Atlanta. They are expected to finish ahead of Ole Miss, LSU, Mississippi State and Auburn, respectively. "We don't want to repeat last year," Arkansas safety Jalen Catalon said this week. "We want to be better. Like I said, last year was a great year, but I always say to the team that last year was last year. It's 2022. "Now it's a new year. Everybody is looking to start off right and try to make it to the top."

The league's media predicted the Razorbacks to finish sixth last year. They went 9-4 overall, capping the season with a victory in the Outback Bowl, and 4-4 in SEC play to secure third in the division behind the Crimson Tide and Rebels. In 2020, Sam Pittman's first season leading Arkansas, the Razorbacks were picked last in the SEC West for the third consecutive year. "I've been a part of teams that have been 2-10," Arkansas linebacker Bumper Pool said this week. "After last season things completely changed, but it wasn't an overnight success. There's a lot of work that goes into it. "You talk about repeating (our) success, well, the work is what ultimately can determine the wins and losses. This team is extremely hard working." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  07/07/22 - Mani PowellJr/2026, UNLV + More +

A week before Mani Powell turned 19 on June 8, he had another reason to celebrate. Powell, a freshman linebacker at the University of Arkansas, received word on June 1 that he was fully cleared to participate in summer conditioning drills. Powell had spent the previous seven months recovering from surgery he underwent Oct. 21 on his left knee to repair damage to his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus. "It was lovely," Powell said of getting the word from Arkansas' training staff that his knee was strong enough to hold up to workouts. "I've been lifting weights, doing agility training, running, cutting, all of that stuff. "Since then, I've just been rolling."

Powell (6-2, 240) said he'll be ready when the Razorbacks begin preseason practice in August. An early enrollee in January, Powell did some individual drills last spring, but never got to do team work in pads. "I'm full go for fall camp," Powell said. "My knee is doing great. It's sore when I'm done with workouts, but that's part of being an athlete - being sore. "That soreness goes away and then I'm ready to get back to work." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  07/03/22 - Jalen CatalonrSr/2025, UNLV + More +

Arkansas safety Jalen Catalon is itching to get back on the football field on Saturdays this fall. Last October, Razorbacks coach Sam Pittman announced after the team's home loss to Auburn that the captain would undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. He added that Catalon had been playing with "a tear" in the shoulder and a broken hand. An All-SEC selection in 2020, Catalon was a regular participant in Arkansas' spring drills this year, but routinely wore a green no-contact jersey as a precaution. There should be little-to-no caution tape on the leader of the Razorbacks' secondary this fall. And he is eager to re-announce his arrival on the scene.

"For me, it's just putting myself back on the map," Catalon said June 21 at the Old Spice School of Swagger youth football camp on Arkansas' campus. "I'd say with being injured and stuff, a lot of people just kind of write you off, or people have little different narratives. "I supported my team, and through the process of it all it's been great." Despite playing in only six games last fall, Catalon finished eighth on the team with 46 tackles. He, too, was tied for second with a pair of interceptions - both in the season opener against Rice - that resulted in 83 return yards. Catalon had nine-plus tackles in three games, including 11 vs. Rice, and showcased his versatility by adding 1.5 tackles for loss. His all-out style of play has led to production and accolades, and injury. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Quarterback Doug Brumfield will return to UNLV after spending eight days in the transfer portal, a person close to the team confirmed Wednesday. Brumfield played in three games and started twice before a fractured vertebrae in his lower back ended his 2021 season. He began spring camp competing with reigning Mountain West offensive freshman of the year Cameron Friel and former Tennessee quarterback Harrison Bailey for the starting role, but Brumfield entered his name in the transfer portal April 12. Brumfield, who has four years of eligibility remaining, threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns while completing 44 percent of his passes last season. He also rushed for 109 yards and two TDs. - Las Vegas Review Journal

He broke a long-standing school record by making 16 consecutive field goals dating back to last year, including a career-long 53-yarder vs. San Jose State. - UNLV Football

2021 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FIRST TEAM (COACHES): RB - Charles Williams, Sr., UNLV,...Williams (Fresno, CA/Bullard High School) is the first UNLV running back to earn a first team all-league honor more than once in a career (2019) and is the first Rebel from any position to do it since wide receiver Ryan Wolfe earned three first team nods (2006, '08-09). With the most career rushing yards in the FBS (4,201) among all current players, Williams passed Tim Cornett (2010-13) to become UNLV's rushing king and later became just the fourth Mountain West player to reach the 4,000-yard mark. The Chuck Wagon led the league with 15 rushing touchdowns, which tied for fourth in school history, while his career-best 1,261 yards in 2021 tied Dominique Dorsey (2004) for the sixth-most in UNLV history. - UNLV Football

  12/17/21 - Jalen CatalonrSr/2025, UNLV + More +

Safety Jalen Catalon will return to Arkansas for the 2022 season. Catalon, a third-year sophomore who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in October, announced his return in a video he narrated that was posted to his social media accounts Tuesday. Catalon starred during the Razorbacks' 4-0 start to the season. He had 11 tackles and a pair of interceptions that set up touchdowns during the season-opening win over Rice, and combined for 17 tackles and 3 pass breakups in the following games against Texas and Georgia Southern.

Catalon had 99 tackles and 3 interceptions during his first full season playing for the Razorbacks in 2020 when he was a Freshman All-American and semifinalist for the Thorpe Award. Catalon, one of five team captains this season, is the third draft-eligible starter to announce his intention to return to Arkansas next season. Offensive linemen Ricky Stromberg and Dalton Wagner have said they will return for their fourth and sixth seasons, respectively. - Northwest Arkansas Times
