Doug Brumfield threw for one touchdown and ran for two more as UNLV opened Mountain West Conference play with its first win over Utah State since 2008, taking a 34-24 decision Saturday night. The defense played a big role, intercepting Aggies quarterback Logan Bonner four times among five turnovers. After falling behind 7-0, Brumfield capped an 89-yard drive with a 4-yard run and a five-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge. The second TD was set up when the punter had his knee on the ground as he fielded a low snap. Brumfield had a six-yard TD connection with Kyle Williams in the second quarter and Daniel Gutierrez kicked a pair of field goals goals as the Rebels (3-1) took a 27-16 lead at the half. Brumfield finished 21 of 31 for 217 yards passing and Aidan Robbins ran for 81 yards and a second-half touchdown. UNLV won at Utah State for the first time since 2007 and is 3-1 for the first time since 2008. Bonner was 20 of 31 for 236 yards passing and three touchdowns.   08/22/22 - Jaylon GloverrJr/2027, UNLV, 5-08, 205 (DS#20 RB) + More +

Utah has a crowded and talented running backs room that features veterans like Tavion Thomas, Micah Bernard and Chris Curry. It also includes freshman Jaylon Glover, a 5-foot-7, 207-pounder from Lakewood, Florida. Glover arrived at Utah as a three-star recruit out of Lake Gibson High, where he ran for 6,096 yards and 80 touchdowns, and had 32 100-yard rushing games during his prep career. Not only was he the Class 6A Player of the Year, he was also the Lakeland Ledger's All-County Big School Offensive Player of the Year. As a senior, he rushed 272 times for 2,073 yards and 26 TDs.

With so many experienced running backs surrounding Glover, what is expected from him in his first season with the Utes? "He's a freshman. That's how it's going right now," said running backs coach Quinton Ganther. "But he's a talented freshman. I don't make plans for them; they make plans for themselves. If they're ready, they'll play. If they need a little more time, then they'll have to take more time." Offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig anticipates that Utah will depend on all of its running backs to get through the season. "It's been my experience that we need every running back on the roster ready to play. In this offense, it's such a focal point of what we do," he said. "Jaylon adds a different element. He's a little different than the rest of the group. To be able to intermix those guys within the flow of a game is a real benefit to keep the defense off balance." - Deseret News

  08/13/22 - JoJo EarlerSr/2026, UNLV, 5-10, 185 (DS#81 WR) + More +

Alabama's replenished receiver room took a hit via injury this week. Sophomore JoJo Earle will be out six to eight weeks with a broken foot, Nick Saban said after practice Thursday. Saban said the Aledo, Texas product had been showing considerable progress in practice before he went down with the injury earlier this week. Earle flashed his potential as a true freshman both on special teams and as a receiver. He was named to the SEC's All-Freshman team as a return specialist who totaled 88 punt return yards on 15 attempts.

His shifty speed led Saban to make a rare player comparison when he said Earle's game was similar to Jaylen Waddle's. A leg injury suffered late in the year against New Mexico State limited his action the rest of the season. He came back for the Cotton Bowl semifinal but misplayed a punt and was replaced by Slade Bolden the rest of the way. Alabama is already replacing 74% of its receiving yards age from last year's team with the loss of Jameson Williams, John Metchie and Bolden. - Birmingham News

  08/10/22 - JoJo EarlerSr/2026, UNLV, 5-10, 185 (DS#81 WR) + More +

Alabama wide receiver JoJo Earle is expected to miss the first month of the season with a broken foot. Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said Wednesday that Earle sustained a Jones fracture in practice "a couple of days ago". Saban said recovery typically takes 6-8 weeks and that the sophomore receiver and return man could be back as early as the Arkansas game on Oct. 1. Alabama opens against Utah State on Sept. 3. "He was doing a really, really good job, having a really good camp," Saban said. "Probably the best he's been on a consistent basis. Just saw a guy that grew up and was playing with a lot of confidence. We'll miss him for a while." Earle had 12 catches last season for 148 yards and averaged 5.9 yards on 15 punt returns. He was vying for a starting job with Alabama having to replace receivers Jameson Williams, John Metchie III and Slade Bolden. Earle missed three games with a leg injury late last season. - AP College Football

On the field, Austin Ajiake is a heat-seeking linebacker. "I've got two personalities," Ajiake said. "I know when to turn it on and when to turn it off.
