It was a splashy move with a quiet beneficiary. Given its perilous athletic department finances, UCLA faced the prospect of cutting sports had the school not agreed to bolt for the Big Ten Conference. The timing isn't certain and the number of teams that would have been affected isn't known, but the Bruins were headed toward an Olympic sports Armageddon without the infusion of cash that will accompany its departure from the Pac-12 Conference in 2024. Now its 25 teams and more than 700 athletes can exhale knowing that their futures have been secured, making those cross-country flights and frigid midwinter temperatures in Big Ten country far more bearable.

"If you love Olympic sports, you should be a fan of this move," UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond told The Times on Tuesday. "When your program is in significant debt, it's difficult just to maintain, never mind to invest. This not only preserves the programs now - which was not a given - but also will allow us to invest in them. This move allows us to reimagine what UCLA athletics can be with more strategic investment and resources." Over the last three fiscal years, UCLA's athletic department had run up a $102.8-million deficit that figured only to worsen given the school's sagging football attendance and paltry Pac-12 payouts that lagged behind its major conference counterparts. Now it's conceivable that the Bruins could receive $100 million from the Big Ten per year if the expanded conference can snag the projected $1-billion media rights deal that's set to begin in 2024. The financial boon awaiting UCLA with the Big Ten, coupled with its athletes playing on a more visible stage, spurred the decision to leave the Pac-12. - Los Angeles Times

NFL teams typically value younger running backs over more experienced options given worries over wear and tear. Even so, UCLA running back Zach Charbonnet could follow in the mold of Najee Harris, who put quality junior and senior seasons at Alabama together to vault into the 2021 NFL Draft's first round. Charbonnet is built like a tank at 6-foot-1, 220 pounds, but his size does not limit his speed and agility. He is just as comfortable running around tackles as he is through, and has handled his collegiate workload thus far without major injury. That versatility and durability should make him an enticing prospect. - USCFootball.com

UCLA hasn't won a Pac-12 South title since 2012. Kelly seems oblivious to all the noise and flash surrounding USC. He continues to go about his business. Expectations were high when the Bruins hired Kelly but those have yet to be realized. Could UCLA contend for the Pac-12 title this fall? Last year, it led the Pac-12 in scoring offense, 36.5 points per game. The Bruins return quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who completed 62% of his passes for 2,409 yards with 21 touchdowns and six interceptions in 2021 and opted to come back for a fifth season.

DTR missed the Utah game last year after suffering an arm injury the previous week against Oregon. "He has a ton of reps under his belt that he has in his catalog in the back of his brain," Kelly said. "Like, 'I've been in this situation before and this is what happened." "He's displayed great leadership with all the younger guys. To have the quarterback really be a leader and coming back for Year 5 has really been huge for us." - Deseret News

The Bruins took a major step forward in Year 4 under Chip Kelly with 8 wins, the most since 2015. The offense was one of the best in the Pac-12 last season, led by dual-threat quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who combined for over 3,000 yards of offense and 30 total touchdowns. UCLA also returns talented tailback Zach Charbonnet, who was second in the league in rushing with 1,137 yards and 13 touchdowns. The defense, which was much-maligned over Kelly's four seasons, should show growth with plenty of experienced players. That's good news for a team that hosts two of its most formidable challengers in Utah (Oct. 8) and USC (Nov. 19) this year. - Orlando Sentinel

The Hawaii Bowl once again plans to hold a game for the first time since 2019. The college football bowl game is planning to hold its annual contest on Christmas Eve at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex, with kickoff set for 3 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hawaii Bowl hasn't been held since 2019, back when the University of Hawaii defeated BYU 38-34. The 2019 edition of the Hawaii Bowl turned out to be the final UH game for former quarterback Cole McDonald and former head coach Nick Rolovich.

Hawaii withdrew from the 2021 Hawaii Bowl due to COVID-19 cases plaguing the team internally. The Rainbow Warriors were due to play Memphis. The 2022 Hawaii Bowl will feature a team from the Mountain West Conference against a team from Conference USA. If Hawaii wins at least seven regular season games and doesn't win the Mountain West championship game, they will be the Mountain West's representative in the 2022 Hawaii Bowl. - Khon2.com

K.J. Wallace showed he wasn't afraid of a challenge in choosing to sign with Notre Dame as a four-star prospect at the Lovett School. He demonstrated his willingness to take on hard work in the way he left, too. Seeking more playing time after three seasons with the Fighting Irish, Wallace wanted to go into the transfer portal, but would do so only if he could leave South Bend, Ind., with his degree. But his path to his political-science degree in three years required that he take 20 credits in the spring and another nine this summer.

That was on top of a summer-school class he'll take at his new school - Georgia Tech. Wallace will graduate this summer and be eligible to play for the Yellow Jackets this fall as a grad transfer. "It was a very busy springtime for me," Wallace said in an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Wallace joins a secondary crowded with aspirants seeking the playing time vacated by safeties Juanyeh Thomas, Tariq Carpenter and Wesley Walker and cornerbacks Tre Swilling and Tobias Oliver. There are no fewer than 17 scholarship players in the secondary. Wallace, who made five tackles in 16 games over his three seasons at Notre Dame, said he has no issue with competition. In his recruitment, "definitely, no one made any promises to me," Wallace said. "If anything, there's more of a 'you've got to earn it' (feeling). You've got to do what you're capable of doing, and that's really all I was asking for throughout this entire process, is just a real solid opportunity." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Georgia Tech continued to add to the roster from the transfer portal Sunday as former Notre Dame defensive back KJ Wallace announced his commitment to the Yellow Jackets. Wallace, from the Lovett School, played in 10 games for the Fighting Irish this past season and was credited with one tackle. He had a limited role on defense but was more involved on special teams. Wallace, 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds, played three seasons for Notre Dame, appearing in a total of 16 games. He was listed as a safety on the Fighting Irish roster. Wallace went into the transfer portal in January, announcing his plans to graduate from Notre Dame over the summer. He figures to have three years of eligibility remaining. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

It might no longer be the thin blue line many UCLA fans feared. The verbal commitment of Jaylan Jeffers, an offensive tackle from Oregon who tweeted Thursday about his intra-Pac-12 transfer, could fortify what was widely viewed as the Bruins' primary weakness after losing Sean Rhyan and Alec Anderson to the NFL draft. Jeffers is the second offensive tackle to transfer to UCLA in hopes of immediate playing time, joining Raiqwon O'Neal, an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection last season at Rutgers.

Unlike O'Neal, the 6-foot-5, 291-pound Jeffers, a redshirt freshman, has not played much in college, appearing in only one game with the Ducks. A onetime three-star prospect from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro High, Jeffers did not play in 2020 before making his college debut last season. He has four seasons of remaining eligibility and becomes the second Oregon player to transfer to UCLA, after cornerback Jaylin Davies. - Los Angeles Times

  05/04/22 - Kyle PhilipsrJr/2022, UCLA + More +

Wide receiver Kyle Philips got the call from the Tennessee Titans on Saturday and immediately broke down in tears. For the San Marcos native who led UCLA in receptions the past three seasons, the moment he made the NFL marked a dream come true. "I thought I was going to be able to hold (the tears) back, but I couldn't do it," Philips told reporters after he was drafted. "I was just extremely thankful." Philips, who was selected with the 163rd pick in the fifth round, was one of four Bruins to hear their name called Saturday. He went three spots after defensive tackle Otito Ogbonnia, who was selected 160th overall by the Chargers. Defensive back Quentin Lake also stayed in L.A., going 211th overall in the sixth round to the Rams. - Orange County Register

  05/04/22 - Otito OgbonniaSr/2022, UCLA + More +

UCLA defensive tackle Otito Ogbonnia already knew he was going to the Chargers before they picked him in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft Saturday. The Chargers selected the 6-foot-3, 324-pound Ogbonnia with the 160th overall pick. The four-year UCLA standout has the size and strength to develop into a stout run stopper, something the Chargers need more of after a disappointing season against the run.

Ogbonnia, who played in 43 games with the Bruins, said he enjoyed the vibe from Chargers' coaches after their productive meeting. "I always knew I was going to the Chargers ever since I visited them," Ogbonnia said. "I had a feeling I was going there. I kinda manifested it in a way where I didn't almost jinx myself, but it ended up happening and I'm forever grateful for it. "The vibe I got, something just told me, ‘This is the place I can be most successful and the place I needed to be.' Just being under that staff, being under that defense, somewhere where I can really excel. It kinda went both ways. I think they saw it out of me and I saw it out of them. I knew it was going to be my top destination that I wanted to go to." - Orange County Register

  05/01/22 - Jake BoborSr/2023, UCLA + More +

During UCLA's spring showcase last Saturday, coach Chip Kelly put on the headset live on the Pac-12 Network and made it pretty clear: Don't be surprised if Jake Bobo is atop his wide receiver depth chart come fall. Bobo, who transferred to UCLA after four years at Duke, has coaches raving during spring practice and is well on pace to be one of Dorian Thompson-Robinson's targets on the outside. "Jake has been outstanding," Kelly said. "He can make contested catches. He's a big, strong, physical target. He's smart, he's intelligent. I know Dorian and all our quarterbacks are really happy that they can look out wide and see No. 9 there." Bobo had a career year last season at Duke with 74 receptions for 794 yards, which ranked ninth in the ACC. UCLA hopes Bobo can serve as a reliable third down option, a safety valve of sorts.

And Bobo believes that understanding what he's good at has earned him instant credibility amongst teammates and coaches. He knows that he won't blow by defenders. But at 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds, what Bobo lacks in speed, he makes up for in size and toughness. Wide receivers coach Jerry Neuheisel Jr. said that Bobo and Mokiao-Atimalala are not only talented, but also "great people." "To be able to get Jake after his career at Duke, to be honest, I thought we got really lucky," Neuheisel Jr. said. "We got a steal on that one. "You talk about some of these quarterback-receiver duos - whether that's professionally or in college sports - there's a relationship off the field there and that comes with time," Bobo said. "So that's what we'll do this summer and the rest of this spring and into the fall." - Orange County Register

Duke transfer Jake Bobo has made a strong first impression in just a few weeks, with coach Chip Kelly acknowledging that he's "pushing himself to wide receiver one right now." Thompson-Robinson will need to find a new top receiver to turn to after Kyle Philips declared for the draft. The 6-foot-5 Bobo, who spent four years as Duke, could be his new target. - Orange County Register
