University of Tulsa football coach Philip Montgomery used what was maybe the Golden Hurricane's most devastating loss of 2019 as an example of Trevis Gipson's leadership. Montgomery met with media last week via video teleconference after having players drafted for the first time under him since taking over in 2015. The two selected included Gipson, who was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the fifth round as an edge rusher. When Chicago media asked what the Bears would be getting from Gipson, Montgomery promised a leader. "This guy's probably the best - and I've been around some really good ones - but overall, maybe our best team captain that I've ever been around and been with," Montgomery said. "I'm just so happy for him and for both of them and their families and excited to see what the future holds." - Tulsa World

More than 4.2 million viewers watched Day 3 of the NFL draft Saturday when former University of Tulsa players Reggie Robinson II and Trevis Gipson became the first TU duo to be selected in the same draft in 25 years. Of those tuned in, plenty had to be high school players trying to decide which university is the best option for them to one day also see their name flash across the bottom of the television screen. Before last weekend, the Golden Hurricane hadn't had a player selected in the NFL draft since tight end Charles Clay in 2011. It was 1994 the last time two former TU players were drafted. The drought made Robinson, a cornerback, the first player chosen in a draft since Philip Montgomery became the head coach in 2015.

"I think it should give a lot of respect to our program, to our university," Montgomery said in a video conference with media Monday. "We've been building over the last several years. I think as you look and see the talent level that we've been able to recruit and bring in and develop once we get them here - and obviously a lot of that is them coming in and working and putting in the effort - but we're continuing to raise the bar of what we are expecting out of our guys and the type of guys that we're continuing to recruit. "I thought it just shined a light on that - of what our program can do and what our university is about, and we've got to continue to keep building in those directions." - Tulsa World

Whether it's defensive end Trevis Gipson or cornerback Reggie Robinson II, the University of Tulsa will likely have a former player taken in this week's NFL draft. Tight end Charles Clay was the last Golden Hurricane football player drafted, when the Miami Dolphins selected him in the sixth round in 2011. Linebacker Chris Chamberlain was the last TU defensive player drafted - in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams in 2008. Gipson and Robinson are both projected to be selected in the draft, which starts Thursday night and continues through Saturday. Robinson is a projected fourth-round pick, with Gipson projected for the fifth round. If both are selected, it would be the first time since 1994 that multiple TU players were drafted. "We both came in together," Gipson said. "I've watched him grow, he's watched me grow. I don't think anybody in our class that graduated would say they would expect for it to be me and him."

TU was a program fortunate enough to host its pro day before the sports world was shut down because of COVID-19 precautions. The Golden Hurricane's pro day started at 9:45 a.m. March 12. By the end of the day, the NCAA men's basketball tournament had been canceled. Campuses across the country continued to close, too, canceling remaining pro days. "I felt really fortunate that we really got our pro day in about 24 hours before they really started shutting all of those down," TU coach Philip Montgomery said. "I thought it was great for our guys to get the opportunity for the scouts. Just like we want to go out and put our eyes on guys (to recruit), they got a chance to put their eyes on our guys. I thought we had some guys that did a tremendous job at the pro day part of it. I'm excited for all of them to get the opportunity." - Tulsa World
