Zach Smith threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns to help Tulsa recover from a 21-point second quarter deficit and upset No. 19 SMU 28-24 on Saturday. After throwing an interception and losing a fumble that led to another touchdown on his first two possessions, Smith bounced back. He completed 26 of 38 passes, including a 4-yard touchdown toss to James Palmer for the go-ahead touchdown with 2:11 remaining. It was the third time this season the Golden Hurricane (4-1, 4-0 American Athletic Conference) won after trailing by double digits in the first half, and the second time they did it against a ranked team. They trailed 23-5 against No. 11 UCF on Oct. 3 before rallying to win 34-26.

For the fifth straight meeting, SMU and Tulsa played a game decided by six points or fewer, including an SMU triple overtime win last season. Shane Buechele completed 18 of 36 passes for 200 yards and one touchdown, along with one interception, for SMU (7-2, 5-2), which missed an opportunity to move ahead of Tulsa into second place in the American standings. Tulsa was playing just its second home game of the season in front of a socially-distanced crowd of 3,940. - AP College Football

T.K. Wilkerson scored a go-ahead touchdown with 29 seconds left to help Tulsa beat East Carolina 34-30 on Friday night. Tulsa's 11-play, 75-yard final drive was aided by two questionable replays - a fumble that was overturned and a fourth-down catch that appeared to hit the ground. ECU had a chance in the closing seconds, but Holton Ahlers' pass into the end zone was batted to the ground. Zach Smith was 19-of-37 passing for 253 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Tulsa (3-1, 3-0 American), which has won four straight conference games for the first time in program history. Wilkerson had 89 yards rushing and two scores. Keylon Stokes caught six passes for 90 yards and a touchdown, and JuanCarlos Santana added 88 receiving yards and a score. Ahlers, who missed the last game against Navy because of COVID-19 protocols, completed 38 of 50 passes for 330 yards and three touchdowns for East Carolina (1-4, 1-3). Rahjai Harris rushed for 118 yards and Tyler Snead caught 16 passes for 108 yards and a TD. - AP College Football

There is something about UCF that brings the best out of Tulsa. Zach Smith threw three touchdown passes and Tulsa erased an 18-point first-half deficit to beat No. 11 UCF 34-26, snapping the Knights' 21-game home winning streak Saturday night. The Golden Hurricane (1-1) made it two straight wins over UCF (2-1), which was plagued by penalties (18 for 124 yards) and turned the ball over three times. "New year, new season," Tulsa coach Philip Montgomery said. "We've got a lot of talent on this football team. On the road in a tough environment. I'm proud of these guys for sticking together. We've always been a gritty, tough, hard-nosed football team and we proved that again tonight." Smith threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Keylon Stokes to give Tulsa a 31-26 lead with 12:56 remaining. Zack Long added a 34-yard field goal with 1:30 remaining to make it 34-26. UCF (2-1) drove into Tulsa territory, but after a holding penalty pushed the Knights out of the red zone Dillon Gabriel's Hail Mary pass fell incomplete. Gabriel was 28-of-51 for 330 yards with a touchdown and an interception. - Tulsa/AP College Football

Collins combines effort with skill and the results have been exceptional: 182 tackles over the previous two seasons, including 17.5 for lost yardage and 3.5 sacks, six pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, an interception and a forced fumble. "Not only does he have his God-given gifts and abilities and his work ethic is second to none, he is not going to be outworked. And then at the same time he wants knowledge and he knows he needs knowledge," TU defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Joseph Gillespie said. "You start putting the knowledge and the experience with it, I think his level of play will go through the roof to a whole different degree."

Collins was recruited out of Hominy High School, where he starred at quarterback and safety and won a Class A title as a senior. Gillespie has helped mold Collins into an NFL prospect, opting to keep him at linebacker because of his speed and 6-foot-4, 260-pound frame. "Zaven is a tremendous talent," coach Philip Montgomery said. "He's a guy who can cover a lot of ground. He's a guy that can play multiple positions. He can do a lot of different things for us and I think his future is extremely bright." Heading into his third season as a starter, Collins is TU's top returning tackler and the centerpiece for a defense brimming with potential. - Tulsa World

  08/20/20 - Bryce BrayrSr/2024, Tulsa + More +

Former Bixby offensive lineman Bryce Bray is transferring to the University of Tulsa, he announced on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. Bray spent less than a week in the NCAA's transfer portal. He was removed from the Oklahoma State roster after having committed what a university official said was a violation of a team policy. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 310 pounds, Bray started 10 games for the Cowboys last season as a redshirt freshman. He was a Rivals.com three-star recruit out of Bixby, where he was on three state-title teams. Barring a waiver, Bray will likely have to sit out the 2020 season, which opens Sept. 12 at OSU. - Tulsa World
