  12/05/20 - Zach SmithrSr/2021, Tulsa, 6-3, 222 (DS#16 QB) + More +

No. 22 Tulsa clinched a spot in the American Athletic Conference title game, using a strong defensive effort and a tie-breaking 66-yard touchdown pass from Zach Smith to Josh Johnson to beat Navy 19-6 Saturday for its sixth straight victory. The Golden Hurricane (6-1, 6-0, No. 24 CFP) needed to win one of their final two games to play for the AAC championship. Tulsa will face Cincinnati at home next weekend before taking on the Bearcats for the league title on Dec. 19.

Navy (3-6, 3-4) will bring a four-game losing streak into next week's clash with archrival Army. The Midshipmen produced only 153 yards in offense and lost their home finale for the first time since 2002. The score was tied at 6 late in the third quarter before Smith lofted a long pass between four Navy defenders into the waiting arms of Johnson, who outdistanced his pursuers in a 40-yard sprint to the end zone. It was one of few bright spots for Smith, who went 10 for 25 for 168 yards in Tulsa's lowest-scoring effort since a season-opening 16-7 loss to Oklahoma State. - Tulsa/AP College Football

Another week, another honor for University of Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins. On Sunday, Collins was selected the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the week, the first Hurricane player to earn the recognition since 2005. A fourth-year junior from Hominy, Collins sealed Tulsa's win against Tulane on Thursday with a 96-yard interception return in the second overtime and recorded a season-high 15 tackles in the game.

Through six games, Collins has 48 tackles, including 10.5 for lost yardage and four sacks along with four interceptions and a forced fumble. He also was the Chuck Bednarik National Defensive Player of the Week in September and the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week last week. "I'm just going to go ahead and say it: Why is that guy not in the running for the Heisman?" Tulsa coach Philip Montgomery said after the Tulane win. "Tell me someone that has affected more games than that guy. If we want to talk about the best players in college football, in my opinion, he's there. He's a part of it." - Tulsa World

Falling behind early is becoming a regular occurrence for Tulsa. So are late-game heroics. Zaven Collins returned an interception 96 yards for a touchdown in the second overtime to give No. 25 Tulsa a 30-24 comeback victory over Tulane on Thursday night. Tulsa (5-1, 5-0 American Athletic Conference) forced overtime when third-string quarterback Brin Davis connected with JuanCarlos Santana for a Hail Mary 37-yard touchdown pass.

Playing its first game as a ranked team since 2008, Tulsa outgained Tulane 522 yards to 302, but turned the ball over three times. The Golden Hurricane trailed 14-0 entering the fourth quarter - the fourth game this season they have overcome a 14-point-or-more deficit to win. Brin entered with 2:09 left in the third quarter after backup Seth Boomer was carted off the field because of a left leg injury. Starter Zach Smith left with a torso injury late in the first quarter. Brin completed 18 of 28 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns. His 18-yard TD run with 9:17 remaining got Tulsa's comeback started. Corey Taylor II, carrying the ball for the first time in four games, gained 132 yards on 19 carries for the Golden Hurricane. Santana added eight receptions for 138 yards and the game-tying score. - AP College Football

Zach Smith threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns to help Tulsa recover from a 21-point second quarter deficit and upset No. 19 SMU 28-24 on Saturday. After throwing an interception and losing a fumble that led to another touchdown on his first two possessions, Smith bounced back. He completed 26 of 38 passes, including a 4-yard touchdown toss to James Palmer for the go-ahead touchdown with 2:11 remaining. It was the third time this season the Golden Hurricane (4-1, 4-0 American Athletic Conference) won after trailing by double digits in the first half, and the second time they did it against a ranked team. They trailed 23-5 against No. 11 UCF on Oct. 3 before rallying to win 34-26.

For the fifth straight meeting, SMU and Tulsa played a game decided by six points or fewer, including an SMU triple overtime win last season. Shane Buechele completed 18 of 36 passes for 200 yards and one touchdown, along with one interception, for SMU (7-2, 5-2), which missed an opportunity to move ahead of Tulsa into second place in the American standings. Tulsa was playing just its second home game of the season in front of a socially-distanced crowd of 3,940. - AP College Football

T.K. Wilkerson scored a go-ahead touchdown with 29 seconds left to help Tulsa beat East Carolina 34-30 on Friday night. Tulsa's 11-play, 75-yard final drive was aided by two questionable replays - a fumble that was overturned and a fourth-down catch that appeared to hit the ground. ECU had a chance in the closing seconds, but Holton Ahlers' pass into the end zone was batted to the ground. Zach Smith was 19-of-37 passing for 253 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Tulsa (3-1, 3-0 American), which has won four straight conference games for the first time in program history. Wilkerson had 89 yards rushing and two scores. Keylon Stokes caught six passes for 90 yards and a touchdown, and JuanCarlos Santana added 88 receiving yards and a score. Ahlers, who missed the last game against Navy because of COVID-19 protocols, completed 38 of 50 passes for 330 yards and three touchdowns for East Carolina (1-4, 1-3). Rahjai Harris rushed for 118 yards and Tyler Snead caught 16 passes for 108 yards and a TD. - AP College Football
