  Tulane wide receiver Jha'Quan Jackson refuses to talk about his disappointing 2021 that began with a knee injury in preseason camp and ended in a humbling, 2-10 record. He is not being belligerent. He simply wants to focus on the present and the future rather than re-live the past. "I'm excited to get back with the team," he said after Friday morning's practice, the Green Wave's first in shoulder pads. "I worked hard all summer. The standard is coming out here and competing for a conference championship. We've been going up the hill, and we are climbing each and every day trying to get one percent better." Jackson, for one, looks a hundred percent better than he did after he got hurt last August.

Coming off a year in which he tied for the team lead in receptions (31), was second in receiving yards (425) and first in touchdown catches (eight), he suffered a severe (redshirt) sophomore slump to 19 catches, 274 yards and, most painfully, one score. This, from a guy who told fans at a meet-the-team night they could call him ATM for "automatic touchdown maker." The letdown was team wide. "He had a tough season," coach Willie Fritz said. "It was humbling for everyone. I was humbled. He had injuries and fought through it all, and that happens sometimes in this game, but he's healthy and ready to go this year." - New Orleans Times Picayune

  After persevering through an injury-affected 2021, Michael Pratt admitted he needed to get stronger to withstand the punishment quarterbacks receive in college. Mission accomplished. After playing at about 205 pounds at the beginning of last season, he said he weighed in at 218 on Wednesday and felt healthier than he had ever been. "My body's good," he said. "I just feel better overall." Pratt was banged up at the end of Tulane's opener at Oklahoma, injured his throwing shoulder two games later in the fourth quarter at Ole Miss and never was 100-percent healthy the rest of the way.

He also suffered a concussion on a massive hit while scrambling against SMU, forcing him to miss the next game against Cincinnati. Entering his third year as a starter, he expects to improve on his numbers from last season, when he completed 59.3 percent of his passes for 2,243 yards and 20 touchdowns with six interceptions. "The biggest thing is just the way the game slows down from year to year," he said. "It's a big adjustment from high school to college, and going into my second year things started to slow down and now it's at the point where the little things, the blitzes, all that kind of stuff, I just pick up a lot faster and it's kind of just habit at this point." - New Orleans Times Picayune

  Tyjae Spears rushed for more yards in Tulane's finale against Memphis last season than any player in school history not named Matt Forte. His encore might last for all of 2022. Fully recovered from a torn ACL he suffered in Septembers 2020, Spears took a handoff from Michael Pratt during a red zone drill in Tulane's first preseason practice Wednesday morning, bounced outside, turned the corner and beat everyone to the pylon for a 15-yard touchdown. He punctuated his dash with a little jump as he approached the goal line. Twelve months after admitting he was nowhere near 100 percent physically or mentally, Spears, a redshirt junior from Ponchatoula, is in a much better head space. "Last year I still had a limp, and I'm kind of getting emotional right now talking about all the hard work I put in," he said. "I don't want to brag on myself, but it's special to be here now and to keep on elevating."

How high he can go is anyone's guess. Forte's record-shattering 2,127-yard season in 2007 is untouchable, but maybe not Mewelde Moore's second-best total of 1,421 in 2001. Spears' 264-yard outburst on 30 carries at Memphis surprised no one who had seen him run. His skill set alone could help the Green Wave put last year's dismal 2-10 record in the rearview mirror. "I'll never forget one of our first practices when I got here, he got the ball on a A-gap run (between the center and guard), took a jab step and ended up in the C-gap (outside the tackle) on the other side," said linebacker Nick Anderson, who arrived in 2019 along with Spears. "Last year around this time he was hesitant to make certain cuts, but you can see him getting back to his normal self." - New Orleans Times Picayune

Last season, he posted 25 kickoff returns for 551 yards and 13 more on punt return for 132 yards. On offense, he had 17 catches for 294 yards and one touchdown. He also posted 26 yards on the ground.   2022 PRESEASON RAY GUY WATCHLIST: Jacob Barnes - Louisiana Tech,...Barnes (5-9, 193) enters his redshirt junior season as a dual threat kicker, punter. Last season (2021) he was a perfect 39-for-39 in PATs and made multiple PATs in nine games including two, 6-6 efforts against Southeastern (Sept. 11) and Charlotte (Nov. 13). Finished the season 17-for-21 in field goals, connecting on 80.95 percent of his kicks, including 12-13 within 40 yards and a season-long of 47 yards. Also added 19 kickoffs (44.1-yard average). In 2020 Barnes was a perfect 33-for-33 in PATs, including a career-best 9-for-9 against HBU (Nov. 26). Opened the season with eight straight made field goals, including a career-long 51-yarder against HBU.   The USC athletic department is taking its next step in the Name, Image and Likeness arms race across college athletics. On Wednesday, USC announced a new partnership with media company Stay Doubted to create a third-party agency that will provide NIL services to USC student-athletes who choose to opt in. The agency, BLVD LLC, will also operate as a media company for USC student-athletes. If one were to opt in, the agency will work to find NIL opportunities from sponsorships to events and merchandising. USC will not be a party to the agency agreements, nor will it receive any cut of revenue from NIL deals.

"We believe every student-athlete should have access to NIL support resources and currently only about 3% of our student-athletes have engaged professional service providers," USC athletic director Mike Bohn said in a statement. "We strive to support our student-athletes in all ways, including in the NIL space. We are thrilled to be able to meet this need and make these resources available through a qualified and reputable third party for our student-athletes should they wish to take advantage." BLVD LLC will officially launch later in the summer in advance of the fall sports season. - Orange County Register

  Former Rutgers placekicker Valentino Ambrosio tweeted Monday he was transferring to Tulane, filling a gaping hole. Valentino, a senior who will be on scholarship, converted 21 of 27 field goals and 45 of 47 extra over the past two years for the Scarlet Knights after playing soccer at Fairleigh Dickinson and Rutgers the previous two seasons. Range is a question mark—his longest field goal was 42 yards—but the Green Wave lacked reliability from anywhere last fall and in spring practice. Merek Glover went 6 for 11 in his final year of eligibility, missing a 26-yard kick against Tulsa on the final play of regulation in a game the Wave lost in overtime. - Times Picayune
