Fourth-year running back Ygenio Booker's touchdown catch at Tulane's Thursday morning practice prompted a celebratory jump bump from coach Willie Fritz on the sideline. It will not be the only one if the versatile Booker, a Brooksville, Florida product who sometimes lines up as a receiver, continues playing as well as he has in preseason camp. To get the love from Fritz, he raced to the end zone and outleaped cornerback Reggie Neely for a 37-yard grab on a 50-50 ball from quarterback Justin Ibieta. "He's very explosive," Fritz said. "He has great speed, excellent hands and a great burst. He's running full speed in four or five yards. Sometimes it takes them 15 yards to get running full speed."

Largely because of injuries, Booker, classified as a redshirt sophomore because of the free COVID year, still is waiting for a breakthrough in games. His career statistics are 25 carries for 130 yards and nine catches for 71 yards. His numbers should be much healthier this season. "I feel great," he said. "I'm just coming out here and having fun every day, playing the game like a backyard type of fun, how I grew up. I go 100 percent every time because you never know when it's your last play." - New Orleans Times Picayune

When he introduced himself to fans at Tulane's "Let's Talk Football" event in late July, wide receiver Jha'Quan Jackson said his nickname was ATM, explaining it meant Automatic Touchdown Maker. The playful bravado was out of character for Jackson, who normally is soft-spoken in public, but on point considering his breakout potential. After scoring five times in the last four games of 2020, he is capable of reaching the end zone in a variety of ways thanks to his terrific change of direction and open-field skills. He became one of freshman quarterback and roommate Michael Pratt's primary targets a year ago, making 25 of his team-high tying 31 catches (and seven of his nine touchdowns) in the final seven games. Their rapport has remained strong early in preseason practice. On Saturday, Pratt hit him deep in one-on-one drills and connected with him again on a perfect strike to the corner of the end zone during 11-on-11 work.

Jackson also scored on a 14-yard run against Army last November, averaged an impressive 13.9 yards on punt returns after supplanting Amare Jones in that role and figures to be the Wave's primary kickoff returner with Jones' transfer to Georgia Southern. His multi-faceted skills earned him a spot on the preseason watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, which goes to the most versatile player in college football. "If he keeps pushing himself, he can be a great player in this conference," Tulane offensive coordinator Chip Long said. "His ceiling is unmatched." - New Orleans Times Picayune

After practicing Friday for the first time in nearly 11 months and declaring himself ready to go, Tulane running back Tyjae Spears was brutally honest about the injury that stopped him in his tracks last September and prompted plenty of misgivings moving forward. Recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament is hard on the brain. "I'm not going to lie, I wanted to quit," he said. "Nine months ago I wasn't even walking. Two months ago, I was ready to quit and pack it up and go home." Those strong emotions likely never would have morphed into reality. Spears, a Ponchatoula High product entering his third year with the Green Wave, is too talented with too much of a future to give it all up.

After redshirting in 2019 (despite playing in four games), he rushed for 105 yards in the Green Wave's 2020 opener against South Alabama, 119 more the following week against Navy and was halfway to 100 when the knee took a fateful hit against Southern Miss at the end of a touchdown run early in the second quarter last Sept. 26. He thought his leg was broken, checked it and realized the problem was different. Either way, he knew his season was over in an instant. His perceived setbacks in his recovery reached a critical point in late May. "I wasn't seeing any progress when I was doing the work every day," he said. "I was still limping. I couldn't finish. I couldn't get up to full speed. It just took a toll on me. Some days I was progressing in the training room, and then the next day I couldn't do anything and was back down to ground zero again." - New Orleans Times Picayune

When news broke Monday that LSU starting left tackle Dare Rosenthal was entering the NCAA transfer portal after violating team rules, immediate questions arose how an offensive line that was supposed to return each starter from last season would fill in. LSU coach Ed Orgeron said in a Tuesday morning radio interview that junior lineman Cameron Wire is set to replace Rosenthal as the team's starting left tackle.

Wire, a 6-foot-6, 311-pound East Ascension High graduate, is the most tenured option to replace Rosenthal in 2021. Wire has been a utility lineman for LSU in the past two seasons, and he started in six games last season while playing tackle and guard. Garrett Dellinger, an early enrollee who was recruited as a tackle, will have to become LSU's sixth-man lineman in place of Wire. Beyond that, Orgeron said, LSU's depth at offensive tackle remains questionable. "I don't know who's the second left tackle right now, to be honest with you," Orgeron told WNXX-FM's "Off the Bench." - Baton Rouge Advocate

Former Memphis defensive lineman Joseph Dorceus will remain in the AAC. Dorceus is heading to Tulane as a graduate transfer, he announced Thursday. He entered the transfer portal in January after starting the previous two seasons. In an Instagram post, Dorceus thanked his Memphis coaches, the athletics advisers and the city of Memphis for supporting him. He also said he'd be "grateful for the blessings, lessons learned and my brothers that went to war with me." Tulane faces Memphis at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on either Nov. 26 or 27.

Dorceus walked on at Memphis following the footsteps of older brother Doroland. He was placed on scholarship by previous coach Mike Norvell after the 2017 season. He appeared in 50 games for the Tigers, including 22 starts. His 35 tackles for loss are eighth all-time in Memphis history and he was All-AAC honorable mention in 2019 when the Tigers won the conference championship and reached the Cotton Bowl. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Tulane defensive end Patrick Johnson was selected as the sixth pick in the seventh round (No. 234 overall) by the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday afternoon in the NFL draft. Johnson was the second Green Wave player taken on the third day of the draft, following teammate Cameron Sample, whom the Bengals took in the fourth round (No. 111 overall). Johnson is the 146th Tulane player chosen in NFL draft history, and the school has had two players selected for three of the past four drafts. Johnson, a Chattanooga, Tennessee, native, closed his career as Tulane's all-time leader in sacks with 24 1/2 and No. 6 on the all-time list in tackles for loss with 40. - New Orleans Times Picayune

  04/07/21 - Duece WattsrSr/2023, Tulane + More +

Returning from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for nearly three weeks, Duece Watts was not at 100% during Tulane's spring game Saturday. He still was one of the most impactful players on the field, giving a preview of what the offense could look like when it has a full complement of wide receivers under new coordinator Chip Long. Unofficially (Tulane did not keep stats), Watts caught five passes from quarterback Michael Pratt, and three of them were for first downs on third-and-5, fourth-and-7 and second-and-17. He also gained 9 yards on a swing pass and another five on a quick out as the first-team offense went on a 15-play drive against the first-team defense, setting up a 35-yard field goal. Having caught 31 passes in his first year of Division I football after transferring from Jones County Junior College, Watts said he anticipates an explosion in the fall. "Just say y'all got a surprise coming," he said. "I'm just looking to make a whole lot more plays. I needed that year to pick up on the speed. The players are a whole lot better coming from (junior college). I think I'm going to have a whole lot better season." - New Orleans Times Picayune

Two more Memphis football players, including another starter, entered the transfer portal Saturday. Memphis senior defensive lineman and two-year starter Joseph Dorceus confirmed to The Commercial Appeal that he will leave as a graduate transfer. Junior quarterback Markevion Quinn, who opted out in November, also confirmed he is transferring. Dorceus arrived as a walk-on in 2016 but grew into a two-year starter who appeared in 50 games, including 22 starts. He was placed on scholarship by former Tigers coach Mike Norvell after the 2017 season. Dorceus had 141 tackles in four seasons and his 35 tackles for loss is tied for eighth all-time in program history. He had 14 1/2 tackles for loss in 2019 and was an All-AAas the Tigers won the AAC championship and played in the Cotton Bowl. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Devin Brumfield, Covington High School's all-time leading rusher, announced Wednesday he intends to transfer to Tulane, adding depth to a Green Wave backfield that has found success spreading the wealth in the Willie Fritz era. Brumfield made the announcement Wednesday via Twitter in a post that was retweeted by Fritz, secondary coach J.J. McCleskey and the official Tulane football account. Brumfield rushed for 263 yards and two touchdowns on 59 carries in 2019. This season, he had just 21 carries for 85 rushing yards in three games. He entered the transfer portal in December. Brumfield left Covington with 6,549 career yards rushing, easily a school record. - New Orleans Times Picayune

Three more players from the Colorado football team, including two on scholarship, put their names in the NCAA transfer portal on Thursday. Starting safety Derrion Rakestraw and running back Jaren Mangham are intending to transfer, along with freshman walk-on quarterback Michael Chandler II. Rakestraw was one of just five players remaining from CU's 2016 recruiting class. A three-star recruit from Sequoyah (Ga.) High School, he came to CU as a receiver, but shifted to cornerback in 2017. In 2018, he moved to safety and settled into a key role. - Daily Camera
