  08/22/22 - Jarret DoegerSr/2023, Troy, 6-1, 199 (DS#39 QB) + More +

Western Kentucky will see a familiar face across the field at Houchens-Smith Stadium on Oct. 1. Former WKU quarterback Jarret Doege has officially been added to Troy's roster, after entering the transfer portal Sunday. The Hilltoppers are scheduled to host the Trojans on Oct. 1. "We've added a quarterback in really a unique situation," first-year Troy head coach Jon Sumrall said, according to a Friday article posted to the team's website. "Jarret has played a lot of college football, and there is no substitution for that experience. So, bringing him in is about what our quarterback room looks like concerning experience more so than whether we like who we have." Doege is already on campus at Troy, was at the team's practice Thursday and is eligible to play this season, according to the team's website.

He transferred to WKU during the offseason from West Virginia and was in a competition for the Hilltoppers' starting quarterback spot with West Florida transfer Austin Reed. Doege entered the transfer portal Sunday, and after Thursday's practice WKU head coach Tyson Helton officially announced Reed would be the team's starting quarterback. "Doege did enter the portal. Wish him the best of luck," Helton said. "What a great guy, great competitor, really good quarterback. Hate to lose him, but understand. He's a competitor and I get it. In today's portal world and all those things, I don't blame the guy, but going to miss the guy because he's a good person, good teammate and I wish him the best of luck." - BG Daily News

Former Bowling Green quarterback Jarret Doege has entered the transfer portal for the third time. The sixth-year signal-caller - whose next school will be his fourth - put his name in the portal Sunday, less than two weeks before Western Kentucky's season opener. Doege played for the Falcons in 2017 and 2018, throwing 39 touchdowns against 15 interceptions in 19 games. He was the MAC's second-leading passer in 2018, racking up 2,660 yards. Most recently, he quarterbacked West Virginia from 2019 to 2021. He recorded 40 touchdowns and 19 interceptions with the Mountaineers, helping them reach bowl games in his last two seasons in Morgantown. He entered the transfer portal after the 2021 season and committed to Western Kentucky in January. He was named to the Maxwell Award watch list in July, but appears to have lost the Western Kentucky quarterback battle. - Toledo Blade

  08/10/22 - Javon SolomonrJr/2024, Troy, 6-1, 246 (DS#13 OLB) + More +

The Troy Trojans defense is one of the most accomplished and talented defenses in the Sun Belt Conference and a big part of the veteran group's success can be attributed to sophomore Javon Solomon and junior Richard Jibunor. Solomon and Jibunor combined to total 27 tackles-for-loss and 19 sacks in 2021 but the unique thing about that is the pair did it primarily sharing snaps. Jibunor and Solomon both play the "bandit" position in Troy's defense, which is hybrid of a defensive end and outside linebacker who must be able to drop back into coverage on certain downs and put his hand in the dirt and play on the line of scrimmage at other times.

Solomon grew up in Tallahassee, Fla. and was a star player for Godby High School, while Jibunor grew up in Nigeria before moving to Georgia. The 6-foot-3-inch, 233-pound pass rusher originally started his college career at Auburn before transferring to Troy in 2019. In 2020 both Solomon and Jibunor became top players in the Sun Belt. Solomon earned All-Sun Belt honorable mention and Jibunor was selected to the All-Sun Belt third team as the pair made a habit of harassing opposing quarterbacks and living in the opponent's backfield. Both Jibunor and Solomon earned All-Sun Belt honors again in 2021 and the pass rushers' relationship off the field as been just as strong as the bond on the field. - Troy Messenger

  08/09/22 - Carlton MartialrSr/2023, Troy, 5-08, 213 (DS#62 ILB) + More +

With a list of accolades as long as anyone else in Troy history, Carlton Martial had options after the 2021 season, lots of them. There is no question that schools around the country would have been clamoring for an All-American linebacker to jump into the Transfer Portal and the pull of the NFL Draft was also there. So, why did he return? "A lot of people have asked me if it was for the records or for this or that, but it's not for any of that," Martial emphasized. "These past few years I kind of put it on my shoulders how it didn't end how we wanted it to. "We need a better voice as a leader on the team that can bring everyone together and be that voice to get everyone going when it's time to go. I feel like I dropped the ball on that the last few years. I want to grow as a person and a football player and be a better leader for these guys. I also see something special with his team, so I'm excited to be here and excited to be back." While Martial is taking responsibility for some of the disappointments for Troy football over the past few years, he goes into 2022 as part of one of the most veteran defenses in college football and a unit that returns other All-Sun Belt players like Javon Solomon, Richard Jibunor, TJ Harris, Will Choloh and a number of other veterans. The familiarity of this group will give the Trojan defense an unquestionable advantage in 2022. - Troy Messenger

  08/08/22 - Jarret DoegerSr/2023, Troy, 6-1, 199 (DS#39 QB) + More +

WKU finished second nationally in scoring offense and total offense in last year's 9-5 season that saw Conference USA East Division and Boca Raton Bowl titles, but several of that team's most productive offensive players are now gone, including quarterback Bailey Zappe. The Hilltoppers are in the midst of a quarterback competition, with West Virginia transfer Jarret Doege and West Florida transfer Austin Reed the frontrunners for the starting job. Both have played well since WKU opened fall camp July 29, according to Helton. "Love them both. They're both doing outstanding. It's a very, very close competition," coach Tyson Helton said. "I thought they both did a great job today. We've got another week. We've got another week and another scrimmage and it's a close battle. I think everybody on this team loves them both. We can win with both of them, so we've just got to see where it goes." - BG Daily News

Troy head football coach Jon Sumrall said that his best recruiting job since arriving on campus was convincing sixth-year senior Carlton Martial to stay for his last year of eligibility. There is very little left for the Mobile native to prove since arriving on campus in 2017. The 5-foot-9-inch linebacker arrived as an all-state linebacker from McGill-Toolen without any FBS scholarship offers. Martial earned Freshman All-American honors as a redshirt freshman in 2018 and with that earned himself a scholarship, as well. Since that time he's been one of the most highly decorated - and most productive - players in all of college football. - Troy Messenger
