  08/22/22 - Joey YellenrSr/2025, Transfer, 6-3, 210 (DS#999 QB) + More +

The University of Hawaii at Manoa is moving forward to expand the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex that would increase its capacity to 17,000 fans. The plan is to have it ready for the 2023 football season. UH was able to expand what was once the practice field into a 9,300 stadium last year after the state abruptly shut down Aloha Stadium, leaving the Rainbow Warriors without a home field. Athletics Director David Matlin plans to ask the UH Board of Regents to approve a plan that would expand seating capacity to 17,000 fans. One of the main reasons is that UH runs the risk of not qualifying as an FBS or Division One program.

UH cites the NCAA rule that stated, "Once every two years on a rolling basis, the institution shall average at least 15,000 in actual or paid attendance for all home football games." Construction will be done from January to August next year, so it should be finished in time for the next football season. Former Gov. Neil Abercrombie is all for it and said it should have been done sooner. "It's gonna cost more because we didn't do what we should've done in the first place. Of course, it's gonna cost more, inflation, whether we can get supplies and all the rest of that stuff," said Abercrombie. The total cost is $30 million. UH said it will use money from unused existing funds. - Khon2.com

  08/21/22 - General BootyrSr/2026, Transfer, 6-2, 195 (DS#999 QB) + More +

OU quarterback General Booty is donating a percentage of his name, image and likeness earnings to Oklahoma Children's Hospital, OU Health announced Wednesday. "My family has been a really good example to me my whole life, and we talked about the importance of giving back," said Booty, who played last season at Tyler Community College in Texas. "I have a special place in my heart for kids, so after my visit there, I knew Oklahoma Children's Hospital would be where my support would go." Booty, who is projected to back up starter Dillon Gabriel this season, is unveiling a website (mtjn.org) where fans can purchase shirts, hats and other memorabilia featuring his name, number and his brand "MTJN," which stands for More Than Just a Name. "I have a unique name, but I'm also a good player," Booty said. "That's the connection … Oklahoma Children's Hospital is more than a name. They are the best at what they do. - Daily Oklahoman

  08/16/22 - Derek BoykinsrSr/2025, Transfer, 6-2, 230 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

Moving to 2022, Charlotte must replace all three starting linebackers from a season ago, with Martin, Tyler Murray and Justin Whisenhunt moving on from the program. While there's a feeling of uncertainty with so many new faces, Healy feels confident in Boykins' abilities, labeling him as the "dude" of the linebacker corps and praising his work ethic throughout the offseason. Linebackers coach Adam Braithwaite echoed those comments, posing a challenge to the redshirt junior during the offseason. "He said, 'What do you want to be," Derek Boykins said, quoting Braithwaite. "You can be an All-American or you can be on the bench. It's up to you."

Boykins' work ethic both on the field and in the weight room has caught the attention of the staff and fellow players, but taking that next step to be a leader has been an entirely new experience - one he's needed his new teammates for. The 49ers added Wake Forest transfer Chase Monroe and freshman Reid Williford to join the returning group of Boykins, Burden, Prince Bemah and B.J. Turner, who combined for less than 400 total defensive snaps last season. "It's been hard. Personally, I'm not a vocal dude, so I've had to step out of my comfort box and elaborate on some stuff," Boykins said about the new leadership role. "Having Chase (Monroe) in the room has helped me a lot because he's a pro. But I think I'm finally stepping up to be who I need to be." - Charlotte Observer

  08/15/22 - D.J. JusticerSr/2026, Transfer, 6-0, 205 (DS#999 CB) + More +

UCLA beat out quite a few schools to land DJ Justice, a three-star wide receiver recruit in last year's class who turned down Auburn, Penn State and Oregon, among other schools. The athletic 6-foot pass-catcher, billed as a one-on-one nightmare for defenders, could have developed into a potential big play threat in Chip Kelly's high-octane offense. But it appears that Justice may not even take a single snap on offense. After not seeing playing time last year, Justice is switching over to defense.

Kelly confirmed that Justice will play either safety or cornerback this season after he was spotted taking defensive snaps during the first week of fall camp. Justice was a receiver during spring camp, but discussions had already begun around then about a potential switch. "I want kids to be comfortable in what they want to do," Kelly said. "He's a really good athlete and we'll find a way to get him involved, whether it be special teams or defense or whether it be on offense." Justice, the son of former MLB slugger David Justice, requested the change. He played a bit of defense in high school at Bishop Alemany in addition to wide receiver. As a sophomore, Justice notched five interceptions in three games, Kelly noted. - Orange County Register

Injuries in fall camp can sink a season before it ever begins. Nebraska's avoidance of any serious injuries ended with Scott Frost revealing Saturday that freshman wide receiver Decoldest Crawford will be out "for an extended period of time" due to a knee injury suffered in a team scrimmage. Frost said Crawford was having a strong fall camp. Other receivers name-dropped by Frost include Alante Brown, Omar Manning, Oliver Martin, Ty Hahn, Brody Belt and Wyatt Liewer. "I think we're deeper there than we've ever been with guys that are capable of going on the field," Frost said. "I think we're going to be able to keep our best on the field when we need to and (when we) rotate, feel like there's not much of a drop-off." - Lincoln Journal Star

  08/11/22 - Joel WilliamsrSr/2025, Transfer, 6-1, 203 (DS#999 SS) + More +

Less than a week into preseason practice, Kentucky football's defensive secondary has lost another possible contributor. Junior Joel Williams, who ended spring practice as one of the top candidates to replace injured Vito Tisdale at nickel back, will transfer out of the program, a UK spokeswoman confirmed Monday. Williams appeared in seven games last season mostly on special teams. He totaled two tackles. A former four-star recruit in the class of 2020, the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, native enrolled early at Kentucky then played in nine of 10 games as a freshman.

He was one of six players who missed time early last season during an investigation into a fight involving football players and members of a UK fraternity at an off-campus party, but burglary charges against Williams and his teammates were later dropped, clearing them to return to the team. When Tisdale suffered what is expected to be a season-ending knee injury in spring practice, Williams was one of the first players mentioned by Coach Mark Stoops as a candidate to take on a larger role. "He's doing a really good job at that position," Stoops said. "When you're asking me about the versatility, we don't have somebody who can do (what Tisdale did) but as far as playing that spot, Joel has done a nice job with the nickel, medium position. So yes, we're going to count on him a lot, and we've got to bring some others along." - Herald Leader

  08/09/22 - Terez TraynorrSr/2026, Transfer, 6-3, 210 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Terez Traynor got the ax. In a good way. Idaho's redshirt sophomore receiver caught 50 passes for 737 yards and three touchdowns last year and was named to the All-Big Sky Conference third team. Nonetheless, "he's had his ups and downs," said new Vandals' coach Jason Eck. "We've got to keep him doing what he's supposed to do." So, an optimistic sign on a pretty good first day of preseason football camp, according to Eck, was awarding the daily practice award, the Vandal battle ax, to Traynor. As one of the team's most talented players, Traynor agrees he is responsible for setting a standard for the Vandals. "I'm still learning to be a leader," he admitted. "I'm young myself." But he had a leader-like response to getting the ax. "I didn't get it just for me," he said. "The whole receiver group gets it." - Idaho Statesman

  08/06/22 - Jack SalopekrSr/2026, Transfer, 6-3, 186 (DS#999 QB) + More +

After losing its starting quarterback and virtually all pass catchers from the 2021 season, there is a lot of uncertainty as to what Western Michigan's offense will look like under first-year coordinator Jeff Thorne. And with that uncertainty comes skepticism about how the Broncos will fare in head coach Tim Lester's sixth season at the helm. Jack Salopek, last year's backup quarterback, exited spring ball with a slight edge over dual-threat signal caller Mareyohn Hrabowski and Alabama transfer Stone Hollenbach, and the redshirt freshman out of Pennsylvania took nearly all of the first-team reps on Thursday, continuing his trajectory for the starting job in Week 1.

"He had a great spring, great summer, and I've told everybody, the race just began today, but he's in the poll position," Lester said. "He got the most reps with the 1s. The back-shoulder one he threw down the sideline was impressive. I thought he made good decisions, but we have to watch the film." WMU football. Salopek, 6-1, 185, showed enough zip to deliver a strike across the field on an out route, good placement on a seam route to tight end Austin Hence and good touch on a back-shoulder fade to Wisconsin transfer A.J. Abbott, who made a sliding catch between defenders against a WMU zone. - Kalamazoo Gazette

  08/05/22 - Lannden ZandersrSr/2025, Transfer, 6-1, 210 (DS#999 SS) + More +

Veteran Clemson safety Lannden Zanders has made the "incredibly difficult decision" to retire from football after an injury-plagued career. Zanders, a fourth-year player who was expected to compete for reserve snaps at safety in 2022, cited three shoulder injuries over the past year as his main reasoning for stepping away from "the game I love" in a Wednesday Twitter post. "While I've worked hard with our trainers and doctors to return to the field, I just do not believe I am physically able to be the kind of player I have always prided myself on being," Zanders wrote.

A 6-foot-1 safety and former three-star 2019 recruit from North Carolina's Crest High School, Zanders played in 25 games with 10 starts over three seasons at Clemson. The 21-year-old safety finished his career with 57 tackles, five tackles for loss, four pass breakups and three sacks across 511 defensive snaps. After appearing in 14 games as a true freshman in 2019, Zanders played the entire 2020 season with a torn labrum in his shoulder and suffered another season-ending shoulder injury in Clemson's 2021 season opener against Georgia. "Though I am disappointed I will not play football again, I leave the game with no regrets," Zanders wrote. "I am proud I got to play beside so many great teammates and for so many great coaches." - The State

  08/03/22 - Lannden ZandersrSr/2025, Transfer, 6-1, 210 (DS#999 SS) + More +

One-time Clemson starting safety Lannden Zanders is giving up football because of continuing problems with his injured right shoulder. Zanders has had three surgeries to repair and rehab a torn labrum. He was cleared to compete at the Tigers' fall camp, which opens Friday. However, Zanders said on social media Wednesday he felt he was not "physically able" to be the player he had been and made the choice to step away from the game. Zanders started nine games for Clemson in 2020, then sustained a season-ending shoulder injury in the Tigers' 10-3 loss to eventual national champion Georgia in last year's opening game. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound fourth-year junior from Shelby, North Carolina, has had three surgeries to try and fix the injury. He leaves the program with 57 tackles, three sacks and four pass breakups in 25 games, 10 of them as a starter. - AP College Football
