  08/12/22 - Judge CulpepperrSr/2024, Toledo, 6-4, 290 (DS#26 DT) + More +

With an All-American lineage and three seasons of Big Ten football to his name, Judge Culpepper might have felt too cool for school when he transferred to Toledo last year. But that's not him. For one, the senior defensive tackle is a good guy who likes school. (The philosophy major got straight A's in high school.) For another, he would have had no room to talk. When he arrived from Penn State, he knew well that - never mind the difference in recruiting stars - his new teammates on the Toledo defensive line could hold their own against anybody. "There was really very little drop-off, if any at all, between the team I used to play for and the team I'm on now," said Culpepper, whose father, Brad, was an All-American defensive tackle at Florida and played nine years in the NFL. And that was last season. Now? While Culpepper would never say it, I will: There probably is a difference between his new team and his old one this year. Toledo's defensive line - featuring a pair of two-time all-conference selections with serious NFL potential (end Jamal Hines and tackle Desjuan Johnson) and all four starters back - could be better. - Toledo Blade

  08/12/22 - Chip TrayanumrSr/2026, Toledo, 5-11, 227 (DS#24 RB) + More +

Just like in the spring, a transfer on defense has kicked off the black stripe removal for the Ohio State football program, with Chip Trayanum being the first to do so. Trayanum is an Akron native but spent the first two years of his career at Arizona State as a running back. He ran 692 yards and 10 touchdowns on 127 carries before entering the transfer portal. Now he arrives in Columbus looking to accomplish the same thing Steele Chambers did a year ago: Making the switch from running back to linebacker.

Chambers also made the transition in Year 3 and emerged as the Buckeyes' best linebacker in 2021 with 47 tackles, five tackles for loss, two pass breakups, a sack and an interception. Trayanum has been repping as the second-string Will linebacker behind Chambers during fall camp and has already impressed some of his teammates with his athleticism. "Chip's probably one of the most athletic people I've probably ever seen come through this facility already being here in the offseason," Teradja Mitchell said of Trayanum. "He's fast, he's strong. I'm excited to see him play. I feel like he's made a great transition over from running back to linebacker, and I'm excited to see him play." - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  07/29/22 - Dyontae JohnsonrSr/2023, Toledo, 6-2, 235 (DS#28 ILB) + More +

What do players and coaches think of preseason predictions? Not a whole lot. Of course, the games aren't played on paper. If they were, Toledo would have won about five Mid-American Conference titles in the past decade. Alas, the Rockets have a single championship. But this season could be different - according to what's on paper. The MAC's media contingent handed Toledo six of 24 first-place votes, second only to defending champion Northern Illinois' nine. Phil Steele, college football's most accurate prognosticator, picked UT to finish 10-2.

ESPN's David Hale said the Rockets are the best over/under bet in the sport, advising prospective bettors to take the over on eight wins. The ESPN power index favors Toledo to win all eight of its MAC games. "I see it every year," senior linebacker Dyontae Johnson said. "It doesn't really mean anything. I think it's just something to put on paper for fans to see. At the end of the day, when the ball snaps on September 1, we'll see who's there." Head coach Jason Candle is not one to play up expectations, taking the opposite approach and lessening the pressure on his team. He would rather have Toledo picked to finish in the middle of the pack than see headlines about 10 wins. But Candle appreciates that high expectations are reserved for programs with rabid fan bases and a history of winning. The last thing he wants to hear is that Toledo is favored to run the table in the MAC. - Toledo Blade
