OCT 10 MAC WEST DIVISION DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Quinyon Mitchell, Toledo, CB, Sophomore, Williston, Fla-Williston,...Mitchell snagged four interceptions, two for first-half touchdowns of 25 and 20 yards, tying the school record for interceptions and becoming the first Rocket ever to grab two pick-sixes in one game. The four interceptions were also the first four picks of his career. It was Toledo's first interception return for a touchdown since Chris McDonald's pick-six vs. Notre Dame last year.   Toledo's Quinyon Mitchell became the first FBS player since 2006 to intercept four passes in a game, according to Sportradar. He ran back two of them for touchdowns in the Rockets' 52-32 win at Northern Illinois. Mitchell entered the game with no interceptions in 24 career games. All four occurred within NIU's first seven possessions. He had three in the first half, returning the first one 20 yards for a touchdown and the second one 25 for a score. His third interception was in the end zone as NIU threatened to score late in the half, and he picked off Ethan Hampton again on the Huskies' first series of the third quarter. The previous player with four interceptions was Middle Tennessee State's Damon Nickson, who did it in 2006 against Louisiana. - AP College Football

  08/22/22 - Tyler LongrSr/2025, Toledo, 6-3, 290 (DS#999 OG) + More +

Toledo's offensive line is thinner. And it has nothing to do with weight. Unfortunately for the Rockets, two-thirds of their starting offensive line is out of commission, according to a source, as interior lineman Tyler Long is out for the season with a leg injury, and tackle Mitch Berg is out indefinitely with an injury. Long, a Springfield graduate, has started 17 of the past 19 games at right guard. The preseason second-team All-MAC selection was part of a line that ranked first in the conference last season in scoring (33.4 points per game) and fourth in total offense (435.8 yards).

Long started five of six games during the coronavirus year, with Toledo ranking first in pass offense (325.8 passing yards) and second in total offense (494.0 yards). Berg, a St. John's Jesuit product, appeared in all 13 games at left tackle during his redshirt freshman season in 2018, and started 10 of 11 games at left tackle in 2019. He missed the 2020 season with an injury, and started all 12 games one year ago. - Toledo Blade

  08/18/22 - Lance DixonrSr/2025, Toledo, 6-2, 224 (DS#65 OLB) + More +

West Virginia's base 4-2-5 defensive alignment is much more difficult to pin down and classify than the simple linemen-linebackers-secondary sequence of numbers often used to describe base formations. That reflects the growing trend of many defenses, which are required to adapt to the spread and multiple formations employed by most offenses, but it's also indicative of the need to adjust to the abilities of the defenders in the system. For transfer players, such as WVU linebacker Lance Dixon, that process isn't always immediate. Dixon came to WVU after two seasons (2019-20) at Penn State, in which he appeared in 12 games and played mostly on the interior of the defense. While he wasn't ill-suited to that spot, it didn't take the best advantage of his speed, which he is able to put to better use in WVU's system. Part of a two-linebacker base scheme, he does have more ground to cover, including more drops into pass coverage.

Making those changes, he admits, took a while. "It's definitely comfort level. It's also experience," he said, listing two of the biggest reasons for his more relaxed, more efficient play this past spring and in fall camp. "Having four years (of college) is a plus. Maybe it just took a little longer for me. Here I run a lot more and am able to show my speed a lot more. It's more one-'backer boxes, two-'backer boxes." His progression was a linear one. He had just 12 tackles through WVU's first five games in 2021 but then built that total steadily, getting 24 in the last five, including 11 in the Mountaineers' bowl game. "I played the most snaps and had the most tackles in that game," said Dixon, noting that the raw numbers weren't the only method by which he judged his performance. "It was also in terms of the scheme and me doing my job." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

  08/12/22 - Judge CulpepperrSr/2024, Toledo, 6-4, 290 (DS#26 DT) + More +

With an All-American lineage and three seasons of Big Ten football to his name, Judge Culpepper might have felt too cool for school when he transferred to Toledo last year. But that's not him. For one, the senior defensive tackle is a good guy who likes school. (The philosophy major got straight A's in high school.) For another, he would have had no room to talk. When he arrived from Penn State, he knew well that - never mind the difference in recruiting stars - his new teammates on the Toledo defensive line could hold their own against anybody. "There was really very little drop-off, if any at all, between the team I used to play for and the team I'm on now," said Culpepper, whose father, Brad, was an All-American defensive tackle at Florida and played nine years in the NFL. And that was last season. Now? While Culpepper would never say it, I will: There probably is a difference between his new team and his old one this year. Toledo's defensive line - featuring a pair of two-time all-conference selections with serious NFL potential (end Jamal Hines and tackle Desjuan Johnson) and all four starters back - could be better. - Toledo Blade

  08/12/22 - Chip TrayanumrSr/2026, Toledo, 5-11, 227 (DS#27 RB) + More +

Just like in the spring, a transfer on defense has kicked off the black stripe removal for the Ohio State football program, with Chip Trayanum being the first to do so. Trayanum is an Akron native but spent the first two years of his career at Arizona State as a running back. He ran 692 yards and 10 touchdowns on 127 carries before entering the transfer portal. Now he arrives in Columbus looking to accomplish the same thing Steele Chambers did a year ago: Making the switch from running back to linebacker.

Chambers also made the transition in Year 3 and emerged as the Buckeyes' best linebacker in 2021 with 47 tackles, five tackles for loss, two pass breakups, a sack and an interception. Trayanum has been repping as the second-string Will linebacker behind Chambers during fall camp and has already impressed some of his teammates with his athleticism. "Chip's probably one of the most athletic people I've probably ever seen come through this facility already being here in the offseason," Teradja Mitchell said of Trayanum. "He's fast, he's strong. I'm excited to see him play. I feel like he's made a great transition over from running back to linebacker, and I'm excited to see him play." - Cleveland Plain Dealer
