  10/25/25 - Josh HooverrJr/2027, Texas Christian, 6-1, 200 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Josh Hoover threw a touchdown pass, Nate McCashland kicked three field goals and TCU outlasted West Virginia 23-17 on Saturday night. TCU (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) barely outgained West Virginia 343-342 but made the most of its opportunities. "Our guys just had to gut it out," TCU coach Sonny Dykes said. "The last two road games, we found a way to lose. Tonight, we found a way to win." TCU started its first three possessions past midfield and led 10-0 before West Virginia had mustered a first down. Each team scored their initial touchdown on a short field following a poor punt. After Trent Battle opened the scoring on a 1-yard run for the Horned Frogs, Hoover fooled West Virginia's defense with a fake handoff, then found Eric McAlister on a 4-yard scoring toss midway through the second quarter for a 17-7 lead.

McAlister, who was targeted 18 times, caught nine passes for 124 yards. Hoover, tied with two others for the most TD passes (21) in the country entering play Saturday, finished 24 of 39 for 247 yards. McCashland kicked field goals of 35, 22 and 41 yards. Dykes said Hoover was shaken up on a hard tackle on a first-quarter run but stayed in the game. "I don't know if he was the same since," Dykes said. Hoover took the hit in stride. "That's part of the game," he said. "You're going to get knocked around every now and then. You've just got to shake it off and move on to the next play and just keep firing away." West Virginia (2-6, 0-5) has lost five straight. The Mountaineers have been held to 17 or fewer points five times this season. West Virginia freshman Scotty Fox Jr. threw two touchdown passes, including a 28-yarder to Jeff Weimer with 3:15 remaining in the game. TCU recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock. McAlister gave his team a scare, though. He caught a 21-yard pass on third down but fumbled and teammate Major Everhart recovered it at the West Virginia 19 with 2 minutes left. - TCU/AP College Football

  10/18/25 - Josh HooverrJr/2027, Texas Christian, 6-1, 200 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Josh Hoover threw three touchdown passes, Kevorian Barnes ran for 106 yards with two scores and TCU held on to beat instate Big 12 rival Baylor 42-36 on Saturday in a game that matched the top two FBS passers and was delayed more than two hours in the fourth quarter because of lightning. The Horned Frogs (5-2, 2-2 Big 12) went ahead to stay on a 5-yard TD run by Barnes that made it 14-7 in the second quarter, two plays after a brief heavy rain downpour and a lost fumble by the Bears. Barnes took a direct snap for a 14-yard score to make it 42-21 on the first play when the game finally resumed and was finished in bright sunshine. Baylor's Keaton Thomas returned a fumble 24 yards for a touchdown, and Sawyer Robertson threw a 35-yard TD to Kobe Wilson with 30 seconds left before the Bears (4-3, 2-2) recovered an onside kick. Namdi Obiazor's interception with 13 seconds left finally clinched the win for TCU, nearly six hours after kickoff.

Sawyer, the national passing leader, was 25-of-52 passing for 318 yards with two TDs and three interceptions. All the picks came after the resumption of play. He now has 2,376 yards and 21 TDs. Hoover completed 22 of 31 passes for 231 yards. He threw a 6-yard TD pass to Jordan Dwyer with 11 seconds left in the first half and a 3-yarder to tight end Ka'Morreun Pimpton on the opening drive of the second half for a 28-10 lead. Hoover now has 2,024 yards and 21 TDs this season. TCU had just gone up 35-21 on Trent Battle's 65-yard TD run with 13:46 left when play was stopped for the first time because of lightning, even though the rain had stopped and the skies were starting to clear before that 58-minute delay. Play then resumed for only about 15 minutes, but soon after the Bears came up short on a fourth-and-3 play from their own 33 with 6:44 left, the game was stopped again for another 78 minutes. Both teams had come out and were completing warmups to resume when officials sent them back to their locker rooms because of another lightning strike detected within 8 miles of the stadium. - TCU/AP College Football

Eric McAlister had eight catches for 254 yards and three of the career-high five touchdowns thrown by Josh Hoover as TCU beat SMU 35-24 on Saturday in the last scheduled game between the former Southwest Conference rivals that played for the 104th time in 110 years. Hoover finished 22-of-40 passing for 379 yards, and now has 53 TD passes in his 22 career starts. McAlister's 70-yard catch-and-run score with 9:18 left put TCU (3-0) ahead to stay, and he added a 44-yard touchdown three minutes later. The longer of those scores came three plays after Kevin Jennings' third TD pass for the Mustangs (2-2), a 34-yarder to Jordan Hudson gave them their only lead at 24-21.

The Horned Frogs for now will hold on to a 54-43-7 lead in the "Battle for the Iron Skillet" that had continued since the SWC broke up after the 1995 season, except for 2006 and the pandemic-impacted 2020 season. Jennings finished 24-of-37 passing for 290 yards and three touchdowns, along with two interceptions. There was another impressive catch by McAlister inside the 1 that didn't count, a leaping grab late in the third quarter while defended on a third-and-15 from the 30, though officials ruled his foot landed out of bounds. There was no replay review by officials, even though coach Sonny Dykes called timeout before the Frogs missed a 47-yard field goal. It also appeared McAlister had a catch in the end zone late in the first half, but SMU cornerback Jaelyn Davis-Robinson pulled the ball away for an interception instead of a touchdown as they fell in the end zone. - AP College Football

Josh Hoover threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns, two to freshman Ed Small, and TCU beat Football Championship Subdivision member Abilene Christian 42-21 on Saturday night. Joseph Manjack IV had 114 yards receiving for the Horned Frogs (2-0), who played their home opener two weeks after a 48-14 romp at North Carolina in coach Bill Belichick's ballyhooed debut with the Tar Heels. It was TCU coach Sonny Dykes' 100th career win.

Stone Earle threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats (1-2), who had a much better offensive showing in their second meeting with an FBS opponent this season. ACU fell to 1-19 against FBS teams. Small's first career TD was a one-armed grab near the back of the end zone for a 14-0 lead, and he finished off the first-half scoring with a 15-yard catch for a 28-0 lead. Small had six catches for 45 yards. Hoover was 21 of 27 without an interception, and his other scoring tosses were 11 yards to Chase Curtis and 21 yards to Jordan Dwyer, who had five catches for 89 yards. - TCU/AP College Football

The safety added five tackles in the win as the Horned Frogs' defense held the Tar Heels to just 222 yards of total offense that included just 50 yards on the ground.   Bud Clark had a first-half pick-six and Kevorian Barnes had a 75-yard touchdown run on the first second-half snap to help TCU spoil Bill Belichick's college coaching debut by rolling past North Carolina 48-14 on Monday night. The 73-year-old Belichick had won six Super Bowl titles in a 24-year run as head coach of the NFL's New England Patriots. His Tar Heels (0-1) scored on the game's first possession, but the Horned Frogs steadily took control to drive a full-house hostile crowd to the exits well before the fourth quarter.

Clark's 25-yard return late in the second was the first of two defensive touchdowns for the Horned Frogs (1-0), the other being Devean Deal's 37-yard scoop-and-score in the third. TCU's Josh Hoover threw for two scores while Jordan Dwyer finished with nine catches for 136 yards and a 27-yard first-quarter TD. Trent Battle added his own score by running untouched around the left side for 28 yards as TCU built a 41-7 lead. Caleb Hood ran for a score for the Tar Heels' first touchdown under Belichick. South Alabama transfer quarterback Gio Lopez completed 4 of 10 passes for 69 yards before exiting the game after halftime with a back injury. TCU outgained UNC 542-222 in total offense. - TCU/AP College Football

  08/31/24 - Josh HooverrJr/2027, Texas Christian, 6-1, 200 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Josh Hoover threw for 353 yards and the go-ahead touchdown with 3:13 to play to lead TCU to a 34-27 victory over Stanford in the season opener for both teams on Friday night. "We talked a lot about about being mentally tough," coach Sonny Dykes said. "I thought we were. We got down and guys never blinked. When we had to get stops defensively, we got them. When we had to score touchdowns at the end on offense, we scored touchdowns." After Stanford (0-1) took the lead midway through the fourth quarter following a missed field goal by the Horned Frogs (1-0), Hoover engineered an efficient 74-yard drive to give TCU the win.

He completed all six passes for 67 yards, capping it with a 4-yard TD to Jack Bech that gave the Horned Frogs a 27-24 lead they didn't relinquish. Hoover also threw a TD pass on the opening drive of the game and scored on a 1-yard sneak in the third quarter. "These are the ones I love," Hoover said about the late-game drive. "In my entire life, I felt like I've been a guy that lives for those situations. I think we learned a lot from those situations we had last year, and we worked on it all season. Tonight, you saw what happened. We went down there and scored when we needed to." Cam Cook put the game away with a 7-yard TD run with 1:51 to play. That all led to a 10th straight home loss for the Cardinal, who are still seeking their first win at Stanford Stadium under second-year coach Troy Taylor after going 0-7 last season. - AP College Football
