  09/22/19 - Sam EhlingerSr/2021, Texas, 6-1, 220 (DS#9 QB) + More +

Sam Ehlinger did what he usually does: throw for a bunch of touchdowns and deliver big runs. Put him together with more games like this from the Texas defense, and the Longhorns will go far in the Big 12 this season. Ehlinger passed for four touchdowns for the third time this season, and the No. 12 Longhorns' defense held Oklahoma State's big playmakers in check for most of the game to slug out a tough 36-30 victory Saturday night to open the Big 12 schedule. Texas (3-1, 1-0) ended a four-game losing streak to the Cowboys (3-1, 0-1) and ended a five-game skid in the series in games played in Austin dating to 2010.

To do it, the Longhorns had to overcome three turnovers, including Ehlinger's first interception of the season, and needed his clock-killing 29-yard run in the final minute to put the game away. "Once I knew I had the first down and the game was over, it was an incredible feeling," Ehlinger said. "You say you want to win at home." But it was the Texas defense that coach Tom Herman praised. The Longhorns held Chuba Hubbard, the nation's leading rusher coming into the night, to 121 yards on 37 carries and a long run of 13 yards. He scored twice but was also stuffed near the goal on key drives early and late. Tylan Wallace, who came in tied for the national lead with six touchdown receptions, didn't find the end zone against the Longhorns and had just two catches in the second half. - Texas/AP College Football

  09/18/19 - Sam EhlingerSr/2021, Texas, 6-1, 220 (DS#9 QB) + More +

Texas keeps adding to the offensive firepower around quarterback Sam Ehlinger with some big early results. The No. 12 Longhorns (2-1) will need everyone to chip in if they plan to keep up with Oklahoma State (3-0) on Saturday in the opening week of the Big 12. Ehlinger is off to one of the best start in school history with 11 touchdowns and 956 yards passing through three games. He is also one of only three major college quarterbacks with no interceptions in at least 100 pass attempts. The way the Longhorns keep giving him more targets for potential touchdowns has certainly grabbed Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy's attention.

"The quarterback is considerably better than he has been, in my opinion," Gundy said "They've got big and tall receivers and they want to throw the ball down the field...They are throwing the ball more than they've ever been." Wide receiver is Texas' deepest position. After losing last season's standout playmaker, Lil'Jordan Humphrey, to the NFL draft, Brennan Eagles and Malcolm Epps stepped into the role of big-body receivers who can physically dominate smaller defensive backs. Eagles, who is 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, has three touchdowns on nine catches with a whopping 22.6-yard average per reception. Epps is even bigger at 6-foot-6 and 245 pounds, and made his first career start last week against Rice with four catches for 53 yards. Texas also has 6-5 senior Collin Johnson, who is expected to return after sitting out last week against Rice with a sore hamstring. The bigger impact is coming underneath with smaller, faster slot receivers Devin Duvernay and Jake Smith, who have combined for six touchdowns. - AP College Football

  09/15/19 - Sam EhlingerSr/2021, Texas, 6-1, 220 (DS#9 QB) + More +

Texas coach Tom Herman wanted to see his team put last week's loss behind them and start fast Saturday night. The Longhorns did just that. Sam Ehlinger threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns, Jake Smith caught six passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns and No. 12 Texas rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 48-13 rout of Rice. "We said all week elite teams, you don't prove to yourself you're an elite team by winning every top 10 matchup that you face," Herman said. "Obviously, we wish we would have played better last week, but this week was going to be the big test to prove to ourselves that we could prepare, train, take care of our bodies at an elite level. And then, obviously, we had to go out there and play and start fast, and I thought both sides of the ball really, really showed they believed in that."

Ehlinger threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Roschon Johnson to cap the opening drive before throwing touchdown passes of 53 yards and 12 yards to Smith in the first half. Ehlinger finished 23 of 27 passing in less than three quarters. "Any type of game where you win after a loss is huge," Ehlinger said. "For us to come out and play to our standard, continue to prove to ourselves that when we work really hard and play to our standard, it is hard for people to beat us is great." Keaontay Ingraham rushed for 74 yards and had touchdown runs of 26 yards and 14 yards after rushing for 29 yards on 10 carries last week. - Texas/AP College Football

  08/31/19 - Sam EhlingerSr/2021, Texas, 6-1, 220 (DS#9 QB) + More +

It took three years to get there, but Texas is finally 1-0 under coach Tom Herman. Sam Ehlinger threw four touchdown passes and the 10th-ranked Longhorns rolled past Louisiana Tech 45-14 on Saturday night, giving Herman his first season-opening victory with the program. Texas had started each of the past two seasons with losses to Maryland, but had no trouble overwhelming the Bulldogs from Conference-USA in this one. Ehlinger was coolly efficient from the start with scoring passes on three of Texas' first four possessions.

Herman dismissed the previous bad starts as "irrelevant," but those losses had hung over his first two seasons, even when Texas finished 2018 with a Sugar Bowl win over Georgia. His players were more willing to acknowledge just how significant getting to 1-0 meant. "It's a testament to the maturity or our team," Ehlinger said. "The confidence we have to just let loose in the opener after the last two years." Offensive lineman Sam Cosmi called the win good for the soul. "Getting a win is really good for our heads, our morale and confidence," Cosmi said. Texas is one of the favorites to challenge Oklahoma for the Big 12 title as long as Ehlinger can keep delivering touchdowns like he did last season and Saturday night. The junior passed for 25 TDs and ran for 16 more last season, and his four scoring thrown against the Bulldogs tied his career high. Ehlinger left the game at 38-0 and did not play in the fourth quarter. - AP College Football

The hits came at Sam Ehlinger from just about every angle this summer. Baker Mayfield jabbed him first. Then Terry Bradshaw landed one. The junior quarterback for Texas didn't seem to mind, and will likely care even less every time he gets to flash a "Hook'em horns" hand sign after scoring a touchdown. Which he does a lot. "It's completely irrelevant in my mind," Ehlinger said as he leads No. 10 Texas into a 2019 season when the Longhorns will be expected to again challenge for the Big 12 title. "All that's outside noise."

The noisy Summer of (Bashing) Sam erupted in June when Mayfield, the former Heisman Trophy-winning Oklahoma quarterback now with the Cleveland Browns, used a radio interview to dig deep into a pool of rivalry resentment. He and Ehlinger played for rival powerhouse high school programs in the Austin area. Mayfield said Ehlinger wasn't as good as Drew Brees or Nick Foles, two pro quarterbacks who also came from Ehlinger's Westlake High School (and some pretty good company to be mentioned with). "Sam can stay down there in Texas," Mayfield said. "That'll stir the pot. He doesn't like me, and I hope he knows I don't like him either." Then came Bradshaw, the retired NFL great who said Ehlinger "ain't that good" when speaking to a Louisiana Tech fan group. - AP College Football
