  04/15/20 - Alec LemonSr/2013, Syracuse, 6-1, 202 (DS#36 WR) + More +

Former Syracuse football wide receiver Alec Lemon has been hired as the head coach at Glen Burnie High School in Maryland, the school announced on Facebook. Lemon played for nearby Arundel High School in Gambrills, located just nine miles South of Glen Burnie. In Central New York, Lemon set records for career (201) and single-season (72) receptions - both of which have since been eclipsed. A first-team All-Big East selection as a senior, he ranks third in program history with 2,596 receiving yards and is tied for fourth with 18 receiving touchdowns. After leaving Syracuse in 2012, Lemon was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Houston Texans. He appeared on the practice squad for the Texans and Baltimore Ravens over the next two years before a stint with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2016. - The Post-Standard

  04/06/20 - Rex CulpepperrSr/2022, Syracuse, 6-2, 221 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Another quarterback is moving in to Rex Culpepper's neighborhood in Tampa, Fla. His new neighbor: Tom Brady. The six-time Super Bowl champion is renting the 30,000-square foot waterfront mansion on Davis Islands built by Yankees Hall of Fame shortstop Derek Jeter, the Tampa Bay Times reported. The house sits next door to the Culpeppers and features seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms and a billiards room that wraps around a pool. Brady's house doesn't just have one boat lift - it has two. The neighborhood has been abuzz in recent days about the prospect of Brady's arrival. His move from New England to Tampa Bay was the biggest offseason story in football. After playing 20 seasons with the Patriots, Brady signed a two-year contract with the Buccaneers last month, reportedly worth $50 million and more with incentives.

Culpepper, a senior quarterback on the Syracuse football team, is home while the university continues to hold online classes through the remainder of the semester amid the coronavirus pandemic. Culpepper was honored with the first-ever Jim DaRin Courage Award at the SU football team banquet following the 2018 season. Earlier that year, Culpepper was diagnosed with testicular cancer and returned to the team by the fall. "The closest thing I can say is it felt like beating Clemson," Culpepper said then. "You just feel so incredibly ecstatic that nothing in your life could ever go wrong." - The Post-Standard

  03/31/20 - Kenneth RuffSr/2020, Syracuse, 6-1, 308 (DS#114 DT) + More +

KJ Ruff started training for Pro Day before Christmas. The former Syracuse football defensive lineman has spent his days at PER4ORM, a gym in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., working to trim down the 40-yard dash time that he calls "his baby" and do everything he can to show professional scouts he's capable of playing at the next level. On March 13, Ruff learned SU's Pro Day was postponed to April 20 -- just three days before the start of the draft. Five days later, the school canceled the event. Ruff said the shift in emotions has been "a rollercoaster."

"Every athlete that plays football plays their entire life thinking about Pro Day, thinking about their chance to get to the next level," Ruff said. "... The back and forth kind of pissed me off a little bit, to be honest with you, but you've got to be able to tune out that frustration when an opportunity like this comes along." The Orange's NFL Draft hopefuls, such as Ruff, are in the process of putting together virtual combines to be sent to scouts via their respective agents as well as Roy Wittke, SU's director of player development who is serving as an NFL liaison through the Buffalo Bills. Wittke will share the information he gathers with the Bills, who will then distribute that data and video to the rest of the league. - The Post-Standard

  03/07/20 - *Andre CiscoJr/2021, Syracuse, 6-0, 216 (DS#4 FS) + More +

One of the most productive defensive backs in the nation for the last two years, Cisco is already the FBS active leader in interceptions (12). He followed up an All-American freshman season by earning second-team All-ACC honors in 2019 despite missing three games due to injury. Cisco has excellent anticipation, partially a product of his strong preparation, as well as the ball skills to capitalize on the opportunities that provides. An IMG Academy product, Cisco has worked to bulk up since he jumped in as a Day 1 starter and that should help him out in run support this fall. - The Post-Standard

Tony White will be the new defensive coordinator at Syracuse. Orange coach Dino Babers declined to discuss the vacancy on his staff when asked during a signing day news conference on Wednesday, but Arizona State made the announcement on Tuesday night in a release naming Marvin Lewis and Antonio Pierce as co-defensive coordinators for 2020. The school said the two would "fill the role left by previous defensive coordinator Tony White, who assumed the same position at Syracuse University."

White confirmed on an Arizona radio show that he would take the Syracuse job. He said it was a “last-second decision” that would allow him to be closer to his mother, who lives in New York City. The position at Syracuse has been open since Zach Arnett accepted it in January and then changed his mind and took the same position at Mississippi State. Both Arnett and White were on Rocky Long's staff at San Diego State, which uses a 3-3-5 defensive scheme that Babers is ready to embrace as he begins his fifth season with the Orange. - AP College Football

Syracuse has hired Sterlin Gilbert as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The university announced the hire on Thursday. Gilbert is a familiar face. He previously worked with Orange head coach Dino Babers for three seasons, serving in the same role at Eastern Illinois (2012-13) of the Championship Subdivision and at Bowling Green (2014) of the Mid-American Conference. "Coach Babers runs a first-class program. I'm excited to reunite with him," Gilbert, who was head coach at McNeese State last season, said in a statement. Gilbert takes over for Mike Lynch, who also was an assistant under Babers at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green and followed him to Syracuse four years ago. There was no immediate word from the athletics department on Lynch, who served as offensive coordinator and running backs coach for four seasons, or Kirk Martin, quarterbacks coach the past two seasons. - AP College Football

Syracuse football wide receiver Trishton Jackson will forego his final season and enter the 2020 NFL Draft. Jackson announced his decision Thursday afternoon on Twitter. His departure means SU loses one of its most explosive athletes and offensive threats. Jackson, a second-team All-ACC selection this past season, led the Orange in catches (66), receiving yards (1,023) and receiving touchdowns (11) as a redshirt junior. He played in 13 games for the Orange, making his debut in the 2018 Camping World Bowl after sitting out the 2018 regular season following his transfer from Michigan State. - Syracuse.com
