Syracuse running backs Abdul Adams and Jarveon Howard have opted out of the 2020 season, a source told The Post-Standard/syracuse.com. Adams and Howard, who had been projected to be the team's top two running backs this year, have not practiced with the team throughout training camp. Jawhar Jordan and Markenzy Pierre will now lead the group. The news, first reported by The Athletic, does not come as a surprise. Coach Dino Babers has been cagey when asked about the status of Adams and Howard. Neither player was listed on the depth chart earlier this week. - The Post-Standard

Former McNeese State defensive end Cody Roscoe has officially transferred to Syracuse football, the school announced on Wednesday. Roscoe is eligible to play his senior season immediately after the NCAA granted his waiver due to Roscoe's strong academic standing in contrast with McNeese State's APR-induced postseason ban. The 6-foot-1, 247-pound Roscoe logged nine sacks and 11 tackles for loss as a junior for the Cowboys, to go with 42 tackles, 10 pass break-ups and eight quarterback hurries. He ranked third on McNeese State with 4.5 sacks as a sophomore after playing in seven games in 2017 as a true freshman. Before coming to McNeese State, Roscoe was a standout at Heights High School in Houston. Georgia cornerback Champ Bailey, Syracuse defensive end Dwight Freeney and Kansas State running back Darren Sproles will appear on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot for the first time. The National Football Foundation on Tuesday announced the 78 players and seven coaches from major college football who are up for selection to the Atlanta-based Hall of Fame. There also are 99 players and 33 coaches from outside the highest level of college football eligible for induction. The College Hall of Fame class of 2021 will be announced early next year. Bailey was the Nagurski Award winner as the nation's best defensive player in 1998, while also playing receiver and returning kicks for the Bulldogs. McNeese State defensive lineman Cody Roscoe has verbally committed as a transfer to Syracuse football, he announced on Monday night. The 6-foot-1, 247-pound Roscoe has one year of eligibility remaining and will need a waiver from the NCAA to be eligible to play in 2020. If not, he'll redshirt this year and wrap up his career as a redshirt senior in 2021. Before coming to McNeese State, Roscoe was a standout at Heights High School in Houston. Roscoe follows two familiar faces to Central New York in Sterlin Gilbert and Jeff LePak. Gilbert was the Rowdy's head coach for one season before reuniting with Syracuse head coach Dino Babers as the team's offensive coordinator earlier this year. Syracuse football players will begin returning to campus for voluntary athletic activities on Monday, the school announced on Tuesday. Upon arriving in Central New York, an undisclosed number of athletes will immediately be tested for Covid-19 and isolated until they test negative for the virus. That period could last as long as 14 days, according to SU Athletics. Athletes will then begin working out in groups composed of no more than 10 people. Individuals are only allowed contact to people within their pod until phase two of training beings. Phase two is likely to be implemented in July, the school said, with 30-person groups being the next measure. All athletes must practice social distancing. Protective equipment, including face masks, will be used in all athletic facilities, while all shared equipment will be sanitized prior to and after each use by a player. - The Post-Standard

As expected, the momentum from a 10-win season and a nationally televised primetime matchup against one of college football's premier programs proved to be a box office smash for the Syracuse football program last fall. The university drew an average attendance of 42,164 fans to the Carrier Dome in 2019, according to figures compiled by the NCAA. It's the highest mark since the 2002 season, when an average of 42,259 fans showed up for SU's six home games. Syracuse increased its average attendance by 5,121 fans from the prior season. Only seven programs saw a higher attendance jump in 2019.

The figures are buoyed by a crowd of 50,248 that showed up for the early season home game against Clemson, the program's first home sellout since Donovan McNabb was taking snaps in 1998. A record number of new season-ticket sales also strengthened attendance figures, even as the team's performance waned through a 5-7 record. Kansas led the country with an average attendance increase of 14,451 in Les Miles' first season. - The Post-Standard

Two text messages pinged on Kendall Coleman's cell phone Saturday evening immediately after the final pick of the NFL Draft was announced: one from his agent, one from a scout on the Indianapolis Colts. The former Syracuse football defensive end spent the previous three days waiting, hoping to hear his name called. But as the event wound down, the next-best outcome began to materialize. Coleman's hometown Colts emerged as a free agent suitor.

The franchise spoke with Coleman early in the pre-draft process, but had been quiet in recent weeks. That changed as Coleman's agent explored UDFA possibilities during the seventh round of the draft. The texts included details on a formal offer as well as the assurance that Indianapolis views Coleman as a strong fit with a legitimate chance to compete for a roster spot during preseason camp. Surrounded by his parents, brother and sister, Coleman didn't need long to finalize a decision. "Everybody's reaction was just being ecstatic," Coleman said. "Just being overly happy about the fact that, at the end of the day, every kid dreams about hearing their name called, but I still put myself in position to chase my dreams." - The Post-Standard

Former Syracuse football punter Sterling Hofrichter was picked by the Atlanta Falcons in the seventh round of the NFL Draft on Saturday. Hofrichter, taken 228th overall, joins defensive end Alton Robinson (Seattle Seahawks, fifth round, 148th overall) as Orange products to be selected this year, marking the first time since 2014 that multiple SU players have been drafted. He's also the second punter to come off the board after Texas A&M's Branden Mann.

A four-year starter for the Orange, Hofrichter followed Riley Dixon, now on the New York Giants, and Rob Long in the program's lineage of prolific field-switchers. He was one of three finalists for the Ray Guy Award last year and was voted to seven different All-America teams. Hofrichter, a three-time All-ACC performer, ranks second in SU history in gross punting average (43.27), having dropped at least 20 punts inside the opposing 20-yard line in all four of his seasons. He's logged only 13 touchbacks during that span, including two last year despite 65 attempts, and recorded 72 career 50-plus yard punts. - The Post-Standard
