Spencer Rattler wasn't at the Southeastern Conference Media Days event last week, but you wouldn't know it. His teammates - Jovaughn Gwyn, Dakereon Joyner and Zacch Pickens - were asked about him. Head coach Shane Beamer was, too. Even other SEC quarterbacks were queried on the ex-Oklahoma signal-caller. "It's kind of crazy because he was my roommate there (at the Manning Passing Academy)," said Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson, who went against Rattler in a throwing contest at the camp that later went viral. "Meeting him, talking to him, getting to know him - it was pretty fun." Rattler is a question mark.

His benching in 2021 at Oklahoma makes him as such. But his arm talent and oozing potential make South Carolina as hard a team as any to peg in the preaseason prognostications. It's also part of why the Gamecocks have had more offseason exposure than they've had since Steve Spurrier patrolled the sidelines. "I think the most noise we made at SEC Media Days last year was when we re-enacted the Coach Spurrier Arby's picture on the way back to the airport. But there was very little talk about our football team," Beamer quipped. "That's different this year. People are talking about us nationally, which is what we want. We have high expectations at South Carolina. People are talking about our players as individuals more nationally than what they were last year. There's more buzz about this program right now." - Rock Hill Herald

Trey Knox has a humorous anecdote to explain the difference playing his old position, wide receiver, and tight end, where he will potentially be a starter this fall for Arkansas. "Playing outside receiver, on fourth-and-1 you're most likely going to run the ball, and when the ball is snapped you can just turn and watch the play. You can turn and look inside and see if we got it or not," Knox said. "As a tight end, you're involved in that play more often than not. It's just getting there and getting set and really knowing that if I don't move this guy in front of me, we're not going to get the first down. It's just a different mindset. It's just the urgency of I have to get this done and I have to get it right now."

At 6-5, Knox had always been thought of as a potential tight end, but he delayed the position move for as long as he could to hold on to the ability to play wide receiver. But after a 2020 season when his production dropped significantly and a 2021 season opener against Rice when he went without a catch, Knox approached Razorbacks coach Sam Pittman about making the change. "Coach Pittman was telling me that I block my heart out when there's run plays called," Knox said. "I said I can go play tight end and do the same thing. I'm going to get the job done. I might not look the part, I might not be the size, it might not look prettiest, but the job will get done. "I think he understood that and felt that was the best thing to do." - Northwest Arkansas Times

There ought to be a Best Dressed Player award at SEC Media Days. South Carolina's Dakereon Joyner would have won for 2022 as soon as he walked into the College Football Hall of Fame from the adjacent Omni Hotel. Joyner credited his mother, Theteka for the fashion concept. "Peach suit, brown shoes, tan socks, gold accessories," Joyner said at his dazzling July 19 appearance. "Shout out to Men's Wearhouse." The former Fort Dorchester High School star quarterback, veteran wide receiver and bowl hero was soaking it in while hitting the circuit of 10 interview rooms at the SEC Media Days circus. What a nice reward for a redshirt senior's up-and-down, four-plus years of university service.

It was head coach Shane Beamer's nod to Joyner's team emphasis previously lauded by former South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp and Fort Dorchester head coach Steve Laprad. And others. The Tuesday timing was extra special, the 22-year-old Joyner said: South Carolina's SEC Media Days turn happened to fall on the 13th anniversary of his father Damond's death. South Carolina's most versatile player was looking forward, too. "The sky's the limit for us," Joyner said. "We have a chip on our shoulder. We're more prepared than we were last year. We're more excited than ever." - Post and Courier

South Carolina took the stage at SEC Media Days on Tuesday, but without perhaps its most recognizable player. Quarterback Spencer Rattler was not among the group of Gamecocks players selected to attend the annual event in Atlanta this week. USC head coach Shane Beamer explained the decision during a meeting with local reporters. "In my mind, it was three guys that epitomize what this program is about," Beamer said. "Three guys that are great leaders of our program. Jovaughn (Gwyn) is a returning captain. Zacch (Pickens) has played a lot of football. (Dakereon Joyner) has done what he's done. And Spencer will have enough opportunities to be in the limelight, for sure. "I reached out to Spencer, just to make sure he understood why I wasn't bringing him and he was great. He's like, 'You don't have to call me. Take those guys. they're deserving. There will enough opportunities as the year goes."

Rattler came to South Carolina in December after a three-year spell at Oklahoma that ebbed and flowed dramatically. The former five-star recruit was lauded as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate heading into last season before he was benched in favor of blue-chip freshman Caleb Williams. The Arizona native finished his time in Norman completing 361 of his 515 attempts (70.1%) for 4,595 yards passing and 40 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions. "He wasn't going to follow me if I was at a program that he didn't believe in, that he didn't think he could be successful, that he didn't feel like he could maximize his ability as a quarterback and as a football player on a football team," Beamer said Tuesday of whether his prior relationship with Rattler as an assistant at Oklahoma played a part in landing him in Columbia. "If he didn't feel like he could do that, he wouldn't have followed me to that to a school. He feels like he can do that at South Carolina and the fact that we had a connection - me and him and Austin Stogner - was obviously an added bonus and Spencer has been great since he got here." - Rock Hill Herald

2022 PRESEASON MAXWELL AWARD WATCH LIST: Spencer Rattler, South Carolina,...After three largely successful seasons as quarterback for Oklahoma, Spencer Rattler's career went sideways. Last year, during Oklahoma's match-up against Texas, Rattler was benched for Caleb Williams in the second quarter. On November 5, 2021, Rattler's personal QB coach, Mike Giovando, announced that Rattler would be leaving Oklahoma University at the end of the season. On November 29, 2021, following the departure of head coach Lincoln Riley to USC, Rattler entered the NCAA transfer portal. On December 13, 2021, Rattler announced he would transfer to South Carolina with the jersey number 7. So he begins what is probably his final college year at South Carolina with career totals of 17 starts (15-2), 515 passes, 361 completions (70.1 pct) for 4,595 yards, 40 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. And on a lot of curious watch lists. - South Carolina Football and Rattler's Wikipedia page

South Carolina freshman defensive tackle Jamaal Whyce is back with the Gamecocks, head coach Shane Beamer confirmed Tuesday ahead of his appearance at SEC Media Days. Whyce had previously been away from the program for undisclosed reasons along with receiver Rico Powers - who has since transferred to Jackson State. "He's been back for the summer," Beamer said of Whyce. "He was handling personal things during spring practice and wasn't necessarily involved with football, but was still in school handling his academics and taking care of some personal things." Beamer acknowledged that Whyce and Powers were not with the team following South Carolina's spring game in April. Whyce came to USC as a three-star recruit in the 2022 class out of Florida Christian School in Miami. He was rated the No. 828 player and 112 defensive lineman in the class prior to enrolling in January. - Rock Hill Herald

At this point a year ago, the Oklahoma quarterback was being touted as the probable No. 1 overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. By midseason, however, Rattler had been benched in favor of Caleb Williams. By season's end, Rattler had exited Norman to rejoin Beamer, a former Oklahoma assistant. "I don't know if there's pressure," Beamer said of expectations for Rattler in Columbia. "People forget, Spencer Rattler was the starting quarterback at Oklahoma. He had some pretty high amount of pressure replacing guys by the name of Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, and Jalen Hurts."

How'd he do? In 2020, Rattler completed 67.5 percent of his passes and threw for 28 touchdowns with seven interceptions. Last year, the Phoenix native completed 74.9 percent of his throws for 11 touchdowns and five picks. He has the physical gifts, he can put it all together. "Me and Spencer's lockers are right next to each other," said Joyner, who has also played quarterback for South Carolina. "He's a natural-born leader. A great guy. He doesn't get enough credit his leadership capabilities. He's a great guy that we all love." Said Beamer, "We've got to be great around Spencer." - Herald Leader
