  10/10/20 - Zacch PickensSr/2023, South Carolina, 6-4, 298 (DS#9 DT) + More +

South Carolina defensive tackle Zacch Pickens knows what it's like to get thrown into the fire of SEC football early. He went through that last year, learning from mistakes and successes along the way. Now he's more seasoned, and he's watching a pair of former blue-chip recruit teammates take a similar path. A couple games in, defensive linemen Jordan Burch and Tonka Hemingway have his attention. "They showed up a lot," Pickens said. "I knew they were going to do big things as soon as they got here. Burch and Tonka, they're all like, funny, I enjoy them. They're real cool off the field."

Burch is one of the highest-rated recruits to ever join the program, a five-star prospect ranked No. 8 nationally in his class. He hasn't played a ton of snaps, maybe 20 across two games, but he's made at least two plays that stood out. "Both of them are extremely talented," Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said. "God's blessed both these guys a lot of ability. But they both are really really smart, very intelligent. They catch on well. They're very coachable in everything that they do. They're two of the best young men you'll ever meet in your life, just as far as who they are as people. So we're very fortunate to have both guys. "The more snaps that they see, the faster they're going to play. And they're gonna be really good football players for us. They need to play more." - Rock Hill Herald

In 53 games with the Gamecocks, Muschamp and defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson have yet to field a solid, much less outstanding, secondary. It's as familiar to hear Muschamp say the secondary needs to play better as it is to hear him say he's extremely happy with his latest recruiting class. It's only two games, but this year's secondary is already on pace to set a bad kind of history. "We're averaging eight yards an attempt right now, and that's the most I've ever been around," Muschamp said.

The average number of yards USC is allowing per pass attempt is actually 8.7. Tennessee's Jarrett Guarantano and Florida's Kyle Trask are experienced, strong-armed quarterbacks, but that's no excuse when the Gamecocks simply don't tackle. Toney and several of Florida's other playmakers received hard shoulder bumps in lieu of tackles from USC's defenders Saturday on their way to scoring 38 points. Getting arms around a man, wrapping him up and bringing him down remains an elusive concept. "There was no problem," Mukuamu said about the constant lapses in coverage. "We just got to come out and play better and compete." - The Post and Courier

Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler wanted a flag thrown against Iowa State on the game's final play - Cyclone Isheem Young's end zone interception. He wanted Cyclone Greg Eisworth flagged for holding receiver Charleston Rambo. "I mean, I wanted to give him a shot to go make a play," Rattler told reporters during the Zoom press conference. "When I threw it, it felt like it came out well. I witnessed him get held. "All the calls don't go your way. It would have been different, obviously, if it was cleaner, (but) sometimes it doesn't go like that." - Des Moines Register

Oklahoma goes into the Red River Rivalry game against No. 22 Texas in danger of losing a third straight game for the first time since John Blake's 1998 team dropped five in a row. The Sooners, beaten 37-30 at Iowa State, have lost back-to-back games for the first time since 1999 and lost in Ames for the first time since 1960. This marks the first year since 1931 that Oklahoma has lost to Kansas State and Iowa State in the same season. - AP College Football

Oklahoma dropped out of The Associated Press college football poll for the first time since September 2016 and No. 24 Iowa State jumped back into the Top 25 after a day of upsets. There largely was stability at the top of the rankings Sunday after No. 1 Clemson, No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia and No. 4 Florida all won big, though the Bulldogs and Gators switched spots. Clemson received 52 first-place votes and Alabama got eight from the panel of sports writers and broadcasters. Notre Dame was idle and held at No. 5, while No. 6 Ohio State received two first-place votes despite no Big Ten Conference games scheduled until late October.

Overall, though, five teams dropped out of the Top 25 after eight ranked teams lost Saturday, six to unranked opponents. The Sooners were involved in one of those upsets, losing at Iowa State for the first time since 1960. Oklahoma’s first two-game, regular-season losing streak in 21 years snapped its string of 64 straight poll appearances. That was the fourth-longest active streak in the country behind Alabama, Ohio State (not including the polls in which it was not eligible) and Clemson. - AP College Football

  10/03/20 - Collin HillrSr/2021, South Carolina, 6-4, 213 (DS#23 QB) + More +

Collin's Hill's first game in a South Carolina uniform gave him plenty of time with the pressure on. Former Gamecocks defensive line coach Brad Lawing had an unprintable term for that particular sort of moment, but suffice to say, Hill was asked to lead his offense in some tight spots against the Tennessee Volunteers. USC faced a 14-point deficit, which he helped erase, and a chance to tie in the late going, which he and his offense could not pull off. But in the huddle, in those moments, he showed his teammates what he was capable of. "Three words: cool, calm and collected," tight end Nick Muse said.

"He threw a 40-yard bomb to Xavier (Legette), cool, calm and collected the next play. Threw a touchdown pass to Shi (Smith), next drive, cool, calm and collected. He got sacked a couple of times. "That's just who he is. If he throws an 80-yard bomb, he's going to celebrate but get ready to throw another 80-yard bomb. That's just Collin Hill." The Gamecocks' previous two quarterbacks, Jake Bentley and Ryan Hilinski, had a certain level of fieriness or exuberance in their games. There are obviously different ways to lead, and Hill showed his way. It's something he put to use across three stints as starting quarterback for now-Gamecocks offensive coordinator Mike Bobo before transferring from Colorado State. - Rock Hill Herald

Christian Beal-Smith ran for three touchdowns and Donavon Greene returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown as Wake Forest won for the first time this season by defeating Campbell 66-14 on Friday night. Wake Forest (1-2) matched the fourth-most points in program history, aided by collecting four Campbell turnovers. "I liked the turnovers," Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said. "I liked the pressure we got and the sacks we got." Beal-Smith scored from 2 and 10 yards out in the first quarter, giving the redshirt junior his first career two-touchdown game. He tacked on a 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Kenneth Walker III scored on a 12-yard run, Sam Hartman threw a touchdown pass and Zion Keith returned an interception 45 yards for a score as part of Wake Forest's domination. Greene's return marked the Demon Deacons' first kickoff return for a touchdown in 13 years. "There was like three major blocks I was reading," Greene said. Hartman completed 12 of 16 passes for 166 yards as the Demon Deacons won in their lone nonconference outing of the season. Campbell (0-4), a Football Championship Subdivision program, completed its abbreviated fall schedule, which consisted of four road games against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

  10/02/20 - Parker WhiterSr/2022, South Carolina, 6-4, 207 (DS#5 K) + More +

He graduated in May and under normal circumstances this season would be White's last, but COVID-19 has gifted him another year of eligibility if he wants to use it. The decision hasn't been made but there's definitely an impetus to stay - averaging 77 points per season, White could easily smash USC's career mark for points scored and challenge for records in field goal attempts and makes. "At home in Charleston, I was kicking a lot with Elliott Fry," the former Wando High standout said of his summer. "I sent him a joking text message as soon as the NCAA made their rule that you could come back. I just texted him and said, 'Congratulations, I just beat your record.' We'll see how that shakes out, but he got a kick out of it, I think." His work with former Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed and USC great/current Tampa Bay Buccaneer Ryan Succop has paid dividends. White, inconsistent as a redshirt freshman, is now nearly automatic from 49 yards in. There's been plenty of talk about why Muschamp decided to kick a field goal against Tennessee while trailing by seven points with 3:16 to play last week, but none about whether or not White could make it. - The Post and Courier

South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp struck an optimistic tone. He'd been asked about a pair of key defenders in Jahmar Brown and Israel Mukuamu ahead of the team's game at Florida. Brown has been sidelined for weeks with a knee issue, while a tight groin cost Mukuamu the second half of USC's opener vs. Tennessee. But at practice Wednesday, things looked to be OK. "They're all looking good," Muschamp said. "We're all good." Each defender could hold a crucial role in trying to slow a Gators offense that looked ferocious in Game 1 with more than 600 yards and 50 points. Mukuamu is an anchor in the scondary that is bit short on top-flight reliable players. Without him, they have to dip into a group of younger guys on the bench, and that's before switching things up to account for the matchup nightmare that is Gators tight end Kyle Pitts (170 yards and four touchdowns against Ole Miss last Saturday). - Rock Hill Herald

OU's quarterbacks to this point under Riley have gone through most of their growing pains elsewhere - Baker Mayfield at Texas Tech, Kyler Murray at Texas A&M and Jalen Hurts at Alabama. "Everybody wants to talk about all the good things that those guy have done the last several years, but there was a lot that each one had really tough moments and struggles too. The struggle is just part of it. There ain't a player in history that hasn't had his struggles. It's going to happen." Rattler was 30 of 41 for 387 yards and four touchdowns but threw three interceptions, including one in the final minute that ended any chance of a final-drive comeback. "That's my challenge," Riley said of turning the struggles into a learning opportunity. "He's a competitive kid. He's eager to learn. I have zero doubt in my mind that he's going to take this and run with it in the correct direction." - Daily Oklahoman

Weakside linebacker Sherrod Greene fractured his hip against Tennessee and will miss 4 to 6 weeks. "There's no surgery required," Muschamp said. "Unusual injury. They're going to take a look at it between 4-6 weeks and see what they do from there." Greene has started 25 of his career 36 games and has 131 career tackles with 9½ for loss. Damani Staley is set to start in place of Greene, with Mo Kaba behind him. Staley, a backup at middle and weakside linebacker, had a fantastic preseason when starting middle linebacker Ernest Jones was out. He had two tackles against Tennessee. - Birmingham News

Rattler, a true freshman in his first Big 12 start, isn't the sole reason for OU's defeat. OU coach Lincoln Riley said the Sooners failed to execute in all three phrases - offense, defense and special teams. How Rattler grows from this will be pivotal to OU's success, though, the rest of the season. When asked during his Tuesday news conference, Riley did not divulge any of his conversations with his young quarterback following the loss. This is just what happens as a quarterback goes through their development, according to Riley.

"Eighty-five, 90 percent of what he did was either really good or fabulous on Saturday. But a couple of mistakes really cost us, cost our offense, cost our team," Riley said. "He's gotta learn from those, learn from the entire situation. It's a tremendous opportunity for him to grow and gain some experience and make him more ready as we continue to go on down the year." The majority that was good led to Rattler completing 30 of 41 passing attempts. He threw four touchdowns and posted 387 yards passing against the Wildcats. Rattler still has plenty to polish within his game, which Riley anticipates happening. "I'm really excited about a lot of the things he's doing," Riley said. "I know the things he has to get better at will get cleaned up." - Norman Transcript

Oklahoma, which fell from third to 16th in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll after losing to Kansas State last weekend, has been defined recently by its string of exceptional quarterbacks. From Heisman Trophy winners Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray to Jalen Hurts last season, it's been an embarrassment of riches for coach Lincoln Riley and the Sooners. It looks as though that tradition is set to continue, though maybe not quite as smoothly as the past three seasons. Redshirt freshman Spencer Rattler has thrown for 677 yards and eight touchdowns while completing 75.6 percent of his passes, but he threw three interceptions in the Sooners' shocking loss to the Wildcats. "Elite arm strength," Campbell said of Rattler. "When you watch him play, the thing that is so impressive, like so many of their guys, is the way the ball really jumps off of his arm, and his ability to make all those throws that we've seen up close and personal for the last five years, and it's been really impressive. "You can see even over the course of two games the steps that they're making. I think it's a really dangerous, potent offense and Spencer is a really talented football player." - Des Moines Register

South Carolina starting linebacker Sherrod Greene will miss at least the next four to six weeks with a fractured hip, Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said Tuesday. Greene, a 6-foot-1, 230-pound senior who had started 23 of the past 26 games for South Carolina, was injured in the Gamecocks' 31-27 loss to No. 21 Tennessee Saturday night. Muschamp said Tuesday that Greene's injury was "unusual" and that Greene will not need surgery. Greene will get rechecked in about a month or so. "Hopefully, he'll be back within that time," the coach said. "But it's a very unusual injury." - AP College Football

The new-look offense under new offensive coordinator Mike Bobo righted itself after a magnificent start and a severe dip. USC marched 75 yards in 11 plays for a touchdown on its first drive, then had 50 yards the rest of the half. "We kind of just came out and punched them in the mouth and had a great opportunity after the whole punt-bobble thing," new quarterback Collin Hill said. "And didn't capitalize on that, and kind of just stalled out the rest of the half." Hill was 25-39 for 290 yards and a touchdown, but also had a tipped ball intercepted and returned for a touchdown. Flinging passes to favorite target Shi Smith (10 times for 140 yards), Hill regrouped in the second half and the offense finished with 379 yards. - Rock Hill Herald
