Kevin Harris ran for two touchdowns and South Carolina turned three interceptions thrown by Bo Nix into points to defeat No. 15 Auburn for the first time in 87 years with a 30-22 victory on Saturday. The Tigers (2-2 Southeastern Conference) had won eight straight in the series and jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes. But Nix, the sophomore quarterback, threw three picks and the Gamecocks (2-2) cashed in each time to win consecutive games for the first time in more than a year. Shi Smith had eight catches including a 10-yard TD grab midway through the third quarter and put South Carolina ahead for good, 20-19. Auburn was driving on its following series when Nix threw his third interception - and second to cornerback Jaycee Horn who brought the ball down the left sidelines to the Tigers' 8. Harris was in the end zone a play later for a 27-19 lead and Auburn could not recover.

The Tigers closed to 30-22 on Anders Carlson's 22 yard field goal with 6:39 left. Auburn got the ball back once more with 2:15 left and drove to the South Carolina 13. Nix, though, was called for intentional grounding trying to avoid a sack and the Gamecocks held on to beat the Tigers for the first time since 1933. South Carolina had not won back-to-back games since defeating Kentucky and then-No. 3 Georgia last season. That win over the Bulldogs was the last time the Gamecocks had beaten a ranked opponent. Auburn's offense looked unstoppable the first half and doubled up South Carolina in yardage (243-119) the first 30 minutes - except when Nix put the ball in danger. Nix was 8 of 14 for 94 yards on the Tigers first two drives for a 9-0 lead. But Nix threw into triple coverage on the next series and was picked off by Horn, son of longtime NFL receiver Joe Horn. - South Carolina/AP College Football

It was late in the first frame when Sooner quarterback Spencer Rattler failed to see lurking Longhorn linebacker DeMar Overshown, who picked him off, leading to Texas' first points of the game, a 34-yard field goal from Cameron Dicker. Then, the Sooners' first drive of the second quarter lasted just three plays, when Rattler, in the midst of being sacked for a 10-yard loss, had the ball popped from his grasp by Texas' T'Vondre Sweat and recovered by Texas' Juwan Mitchell. Riley's response to his quarterback's turnovers was to put back-up Tanner Mordecai into the game for the rest of the first half. The Sooners did not score points under Mordecai's direction, but they did not turn it over either. "I felt like Tanner would go play well, and I also felt like it would help Spencer take a step back for a minute and kind of see the whole thing and settle down."

Rattler was surprised by the move in the moment, but said Riley soon told him, "Just take a breather, you'll get back in there." "My arm was bugging me, too...I think all of us, just early, the first couple of drives, our emotions were into it, we weren't focused like we should have been," Rattler said. "I feel like after we just all settled in, we were playing really good football." That's what happened in the third quarter, when Rattler responded by completing 8 of 10 tosses for 69 yards. He didn't throw a touchdown pass in the frame, but he led a pair of touchdown drives. "He got hot and we started playing pretty well," Riley said. The break appeared to suit the redshirt freshman quarterback. "It was a good learning experience," Rattler said. "I got a chance to sit back for a second, catch my breath and get back into the game...I just wanted to sit back, kind of get a breath of fresh air, see everything and that definitely helped." - Norman Transcript

  10/14/20 - Nick MuserSr/2022, South Carolina, 6-5, 258 (DS#20 TE) + More +

Tight end Nick Muse caught his first target, dropped the second and caught the next four. Included was the day's key play, where after Vanderbilt notched its only TD to make it 17-7 in the third, Muse caught a 29-yard catch-and-run on third-and-6. He's had some drops, big drops this year, but the ability of the man is to keep getting open, and keep believing he'll catch the next one. - Rock Hill Herald

The OU offense turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions in the second quarter, leading to a 17-17 tie at halftime. Rattler was benched for Tanner Mordecai amid the miscues, but he eventually returned to lead OU to victory. He finished his first Red River debut with 209 yards on 23 of 35 passing to go with three touchdowns and one interception following back-to-back losses that ended with Rattler throwing a pick. "He was better here at the end of the game than he was the previous couple of weeks simply because he trusted it," Riley said of his quarterback. "He trusted his teammates, he stayed really true to his reads. I thought his mentality and mindset and confidence was really good. "He's a guy that's going to take any setbacks or any failures and he's going to learn from them. He's not going to let them discourage him. He has that way about him." - Daily Oklahoman

Benched early and celebrating late, Spencer Rattler had quite the first experience in a most unusual version of the Red River rivalry. The Oklahoma freshman threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Drake Stoops in the fourth overtime and the Sooners survived a late rally from No. 22 Texas in regulation for a 53-45 victory. Rattler sat most of the second quarter in favor of Tanner Mordecai after an interception and a fumble, but came back with two of his three scoring passes in overtime as the Sooners bounced back from their first back-to-back losses in the regular season since 1999. The dramatic ending was quite familiar, even if it was the first time since 1999 that neither team was ranked in the Top 20. It was just the second four-OT game in 25 seasons of the Big 12, joining Kansas State's 53-50 victory over Texas A&M in 2011. - AP College Football

Spencer Rattler threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Drake Stoops in the fourth overtime, and Oklahoma survived a late rally from No. 22 Texas in regulation for a 53-45 victory Saturday as a most unusual version of the Red River rivalry ended with familiar dose of drama. Rattler's successful completion on the required 2-point conversion didn't matter when Sam Ehlinger's pass was intercepted in the end zone by Tre Brown to end just the second Big 12 game to go four OTs. Because of the pandemic, the crowd was limited to 24,000 in the 93,000-seat Cotton Bowl, with the surrounding Texas state fair shut down for the first time since World War II. On the field, it was the first time since 1999 neither team was in the Top 20. But the small crowd, low rankings and previous losses didn't matter much by the time the final five minutes came.

Ehlinger threw two touchdown passes in the final 3:28 of regulation after what appeared to be a game-sealing interception by Woodi Washington in the end zone with the Sooners leading 31-14 with five minutes remaining. After tossing a 2-yard score to Keaontay Ingram with 14 seconds left in regulation, Ehlinger opened overtime with his third rushing TD, from 3 yards. Rattler answered with a an 11-yard touchdown pass to Austin Stogner, then plunged over from the half-yard line on fourth down after his initial scoring run was overturned over review to start the second OT. - AP College/Oklahoma Football

  10/10/20 - Collin HillrSr/2021, South Carolina, 6-4, 213 (DS#23 QB) + More +

Collin Hill ran for two touchdowns and Kevin Harris ran for two TDs and a career-high 171 yards as the South Carolina Gamecocks beat Vanderbilt 41-7 Saturday for their first victory of the season. “Right now any win helps regardless of where it is," Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said. "At the end of the day, our guys stuck together. The Gamecocks (1-2, 1-2 SEC) won their 12th straight in this series by dominating Vanderbilt 486-249 in total offense and three sacks on a rainy day. South Carolina had more yards rushing (290) than the Commodores had total yards. Harris, the sophomore running back limited last season by an injured groin, had himself a day. He ran for a 25-yard TD early in the third, and he added a career-long 88-yarder early in the fourth. Muschamp said Harris is someone who gets better as the game goes on. - South Carolina/AP College Football

  10/10/20 - Zacch PickensSr/2023, South Carolina, 6-4, 298 (DS#9 DT) + More +

South Carolina defensive tackle Zacch Pickens knows what it's like to get thrown into the fire of SEC football early. He went through that last year, learning from mistakes and successes along the way. Now he's more seasoned, and he's watching a pair of former blue-chip recruit teammates take a similar path. A couple games in, defensive linemen Jordan Burch and Tonka Hemingway have his attention. "They showed up a lot," Pickens said. "I knew they were going to do big things as soon as they got here. Burch and Tonka, they're all like, funny, I enjoy them. They're real cool off the field."

Burch is one of the highest-rated recruits to ever join the program, a five-star prospect ranked No. 8 nationally in his class. He hasn't played a ton of snaps, maybe 20 across two games, but he's made at least two plays that stood out. "Both of them are extremely talented," Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said. "God's blessed both these guys a lot of ability. But they both are really really smart, very intelligent. They catch on well. They're very coachable in everything that they do. They're two of the best young men you'll ever meet in your life, just as far as who they are as people. So we're very fortunate to have both guys. "The more snaps that they see, the faster they're going to play. And they're gonna be really good football players for us. They need to play more." - Rock Hill Herald

In 53 games with the Gamecocks, Muschamp and defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson have yet to field a solid, much less outstanding, secondary. It's as familiar to hear Muschamp say the secondary needs to play better as it is to hear him say he's extremely happy with his latest recruiting class. It's only two games, but this year's secondary is already on pace to set a bad kind of history. "We're averaging eight yards an attempt right now, and that's the most I've ever been around," Muschamp said.

The average number of yards USC is allowing per pass attempt is actually 8.7. Tennessee's Jarrett Guarantano and Florida's Kyle Trask are experienced, strong-armed quarterbacks, but that's no excuse when the Gamecocks simply don't tackle. Toney and several of Florida's other playmakers received hard shoulder bumps in lieu of tackles from USC's defenders Saturday on their way to scoring 38 points. Getting arms around a man, wrapping him up and bringing him down remains an elusive concept. "There was no problem," Mukuamu said about the constant lapses in coverage. "We just got to come out and play better and compete." - The Post and Courier

Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler wanted a flag thrown against Iowa State on the game's final play - Cyclone Isheem Young's end zone interception. He wanted Cyclone Greg Eisworth flagged for holding receiver Charleston Rambo. "I mean, I wanted to give him a shot to go make a play," Rattler told reporters during the Zoom press conference. "When I threw it, it felt like it came out well. I witnessed him get held. "All the calls don't go your way. It would have been different, obviously, if it was cleaner, (but) sometimes it doesn't go like that." - Des Moines Register

Oklahoma goes into the Red River Rivalry game against No. 22 Texas in danger of losing a third straight game for the first time since John Blake's 1998 team dropped five in a row. The Sooners, beaten 37-30 at Iowa State, have lost back-to-back games for the first time since 1999 and lost in Ames for the first time since 1960. This marks the first year since 1931 that Oklahoma has lost to Kansas State and Iowa State in the same season. - AP College Football

Oklahoma dropped out of The Associated Press college football poll for the first time since September 2016 and No. 24 Iowa State jumped back into the Top 25 after a day of upsets. There largely was stability at the top of the rankings Sunday after No. 1 Clemson, No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia and No. 4 Florida all won big, though the Bulldogs and Gators switched spots. Clemson received 52 first-place votes and Alabama got eight from the panel of sports writers and broadcasters. Notre Dame was idle and held at No. 5, while No. 6 Ohio State received two first-place votes despite no Big Ten Conference games scheduled until late October.

Overall, though, five teams dropped out of the Top 25 after eight ranked teams lost Saturday, six to unranked opponents. The Sooners were involved in one of those upsets, losing at Iowa State for the first time since 1960. Oklahoma’s first two-game, regular-season losing streak in 21 years snapped its string of 64 straight poll appearances. That was the fourth-longest active streak in the country behind Alabama, Ohio State (not including the polls in which it was not eligible) and Clemson. - AP College Football

  10/03/20 - Collin HillrSr/2021, South Carolina, 6-4, 213 (DS#23 QB) + More +

Collin's Hill's first game in a South Carolina uniform gave him plenty of time with the pressure on. Former Gamecocks defensive line coach Brad Lawing had an unprintable term for that particular sort of moment, but suffice to say, Hill was asked to lead his offense in some tight spots against the Tennessee Volunteers. USC faced a 14-point deficit, which he helped erase, and a chance to tie in the late going, which he and his offense could not pull off. But in the huddle, in those moments, he showed his teammates what he was capable of. "Three words: cool, calm and collected," tight end Nick Muse said.

"He threw a 40-yard bomb to Xavier (Legette), cool, calm and collected the next play. Threw a touchdown pass to Shi (Smith), next drive, cool, calm and collected. He got sacked a couple of times. "That's just who he is. If he throws an 80-yard bomb, he's going to celebrate but get ready to throw another 80-yard bomb. That's just Collin Hill." The Gamecocks' previous two quarterbacks, Jake Bentley and Ryan Hilinski, had a certain level of fieriness or exuberance in their games. There are obviously different ways to lead, and Hill showed his way. It's something he put to use across three stints as starting quarterback for now-Gamecocks offensive coordinator Mike Bobo before transferring from Colorado State. - Rock Hill Herald
