  12/01/20 - *Kevin HarrisJr/2022, South Carolina, 5-10, 222 (DS#41 RB) + More +

The South Carolina running back has been the Gamecocks' breakout star in 2020. A 5-foot-10, 225-pound sophomore, Harris leads the SEC in rushing with 928 yards. The Hinesville, Ga., product will be a massive challenge for a Kentucky run defense that has been so-so (eighth in the SEC, surrendering 152.2 yards a game) at best in 2020. - Herald Leader

  11/25/20 - Shi SmithrSr/2021, South Carolina, 5-10, 186 (DS#31 WR) + More +

Whether it is Doty or Collin Hill at quarterback, they might not have Shi Smith to throw to against the Bulldogs. Smith left the game against Missouri with a concussion and didn't return. Bobo said Sunday night that Smith is in concussion protocol. If Smith can't go it will be a huge void for the Gamecocks. The former Union County standout. has 37 percent of the Gamecocks receptions and 38 percent of the team's receving yards. USC will need more from transfer Jalen Brooks, Josh Vann and Nick Muse in the passing game to pick up the slack for Smith. - Macon Telegraph

Cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Israel Mukuamu, the team's best NFL draft prospects, announced they are each opting out of the final three games to get a head start on their professional training. Safety R.J. Roderick is also opting out for what Bobo labeled "personal/COVID reasons." Horn was likely to leave after the season for the NFL anyway, and Mukuamu had that option as well, although a groin injury against Ole Miss had him doubtful to play the rest of this year. Their decisions along with Roderick to leave now with three games on the table seem to be the consequence of firing Muschamp in midseason, though Bobo wouldn't get into specifics.

"It's been a long year, it's a different year, when it's told to young kids, 'Hey, you don't have to play this year, you can opt out and it doesn't count,' it gives them a way out, in my opinion," said Bobo, who doesn't anticipate any more opt-outs before the year but cautioned that one never knows. "This isn't the only place where coaches are having issues with a long season and the ability to opt out. There's no hard feelings for anybody." - The Post and Courier

  11/21/20 - *Jaycee HornJr/2021, South Carolina, 6-1, 205 (DS#2 CB) + More +

The post-Will Muschamp Era fallout has begun, and the first entry is a big one. Jaycee Horn, arguably South Carolina's best defensive player, is opting out of the rest of the season so he can prepare for the NFL draft. The son of former NFL receiver Joe Horn, Jaycee Horn has raised his stock this season and become a potential first-round pick. He was named National Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 18 after intercepting two passes and deflecting another pass that became a third interception in a 30-22 win over Auburn. Horn has 16 tackles this year, one for loss, and the two picks among six pass breakups. While those two interceptions are the only takeaways of his career, he's had sparse opportunities since teams won't throw to his side of the field. It's unclear if Muschamp being fired had anything to do with Horn's decision, but whatever the reason, the Gamecocks will play their final three games without him. They're looking destitute at corner after Israel Mukuamu, one of Horn's closest friends, re-injured his groin in last week's loss at Mississippi and is expected to be out for a while. - The Post and Courier

South Carolina has lost another starting cornerback in Israel Mukuamu after he opted out of the season, joining his defensive backfield partner Jaycee Horn in preparing for the upcoming NFL draft. Interim coach Mike Bobo said Tuesday four players have opted out since the school dismissed coach Will Muschamp on Sunday. Joining Mukwamu and Horn are safety R.J. Roderick and defensive lineman Makius Scott. The Gamecocks (2-5) face Missouri (2-3) on Saturday night. Mukuamu is a 6-foot-4, 205 pound junior who was an all-Southeastern Conference second-team selection in 2019. He and Horn shared the team lead with two interceptions each. Horn announced his decision to opt out Monday. Bobo, the first-year offensive coordinator, was named to take over for Muschamp. Bobo said that defensive line starters Aaron Sterling and Brad Johnson are out for the year with injuries. - AP College Football

Georgia State's Jordan Strachan has grown accustomed to having his name mispronounced. He's heard it butchered every possible way. Emphasis on the first syllable. Emphasis on the last syllable. The silent "ch" pronounced like chainsaw or as a hard "K" sound like pecan. For the record, the name is pronounced "strahn," as in fawn or lawn. But it's perfectly OK to call him "Stretch," the moniker hung on him by a former strength coach who couldn't figure it out, either. "I've heard all types of stuff," he said. "I'm hoping to change that and get my name corrected." This week the junior spread his name on higher level when he was named the Sun Belt Conference's defensive player of the week. Strachan was instrumental in helping the Panthers defeat Troy 38-36 and earn their first road win against the Trojans. Strachan had four tackles, three for loss, 2.5 sacks, caused a fumble and recovered two fumbles - returning one 43 yards to set up a touchdown. Since his phone was dead, Strachan learned about the award from teammate Antavious Lane, who was given the same honor after Georgia State's win over East Carolina.

"After practice he came up and told me I got it," Strachan said. "It was shocking. Lot of hard work." The award was confirmation that Strachan had made a complete recovered from the torn left ACL he suffered last season just 17 plays into the historic win at Tennessee that began the 2019 season. "Had he not torn his ACL, he was going to have an extremely successful year for us," coach Shawn Elliott said. "He made so many plays in fall camp it wasn't a secret that he had the ability to create explosive defensive plays. He's worked extremely hard to get back, and now he's reaping the benefits." - Marietta Daily Journal

OCT 26 SUN BELT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jordan Strachan, Georgia State,...Georgia State outside linebacker Jordan Strachan collected three tackles for loss, including 2.5 sacks, and recovered two fumbles to help the Panthers to a hard-fought, 36-34 victory over Troy. Strachan, the junior from Kingsland, Ga., helped Georgia State hold Troy to just 40 yards rushing, the second-lowest figure in school history. In the pivotal third quarter, in which Georgia State outscored Troy 20-0, Strachan had two sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

He sacked Trojan quarterback Jacob Free and stripped the ball deep in Troy territory, recovering at the Troy 8-yard line. Four plays later, the Panthers scored to take a 33-21 lead. His first fumble recovery came in the second quarter as he scooped up a loose ball and returned it 63 yards to the Troy 20 for the fourth-longest fumble return in GSU history. For the season, Strachan leads the Panthers and the Sun Belt with 6.5 tackles for loss and five sacks, which has already tied the GSU season sack record. In the last two games alone, he has four sacks, 4.5 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and two caused fumbles. - Sun Belt Football

  10/23/20 - Ahmarean BrownrSr/2024, South Carolina, 5-08, 170 (DS#71 WR) + More +

Georgia Tech's offense will have to find a way to get more touches for wide receiver Ahmarean Brown. The leading receiver for the Yellow Jackets in 2019 has seven catches in the team's first five games for 108 yards. "I think he's an elite, athletic, explosive guy that we have to find ways to get the ball in his hands," offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude said Tuesday. Patenaude said that teams have been more attentive to Brown as a deep threat after he caught six passes for 30 yards or more last season as a freshman, tied for 10th in the ACC. For the season, Brown led the Jackets with 21 catches for 396 yards and seven touchdowns, tying Calvin Johnson for most touchdown receptions by a freshman in school history. In the offseason, Brown put on weight and added strength and grew in his understanding of how to play the position.

"A.B. looks phenomenal," wide receivers coach Kerry Dixon said in the preseason. "He's taken his game to another level." Wide receiver Jalen Camp leads the team in catches with 15 (for 201 yards), while fellow wideout Malachi Carter has the most yardage with 213 yards (on 14 catches). Running back Jahmyr Gibbs' playmaking ability has also taken some touches away from Brown. Opposing defenses have had a say, too. Patenaude said that he called a few plays against Clemson that were designed for Brown to get the ball, but the way that the Tigers covered the plays dictated that quarterback Jeff Sims throw the ball elsewhere. Brown said that defenses have been trying to "vise" him, meaning defending him with two players, one to the inside of the field and another to the outside. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

South Carolina football cornerback Israel Mukuamu got as far as warming up a bit before the Auburn game. But after he went back to the locker room, he came out without pads, leaving the Gamecocks a little short in the secondary. For the fourth week in a row, there's a question looming if his nagging groin issue will abate, and for the fourth week in a row, USC coach Will Muschamp sounded upbeat about where he was. Muschamp said Mukuamu was out practicing for the Gamecocks on Tuesday. He managed to start against Vanderbilt and Florida, but played sparingly. "I'm hoping to get Cam back tomorrow," Muschamp said. "We'll see tomorrow. Israel practiced today." Smith had a cleat spike go into his heel and went to the hospital as a precaution against infections (he had to get stitches). Mukuamu was a second-team All-SEC player last season. Without him, sophomore John Dixon has had to step up, as has the rest of the Gamecocks secondary. They held their own against a slew of talented players from Auburn, but were also extremely thin, with safety/nickel Jammie Robinson, already a starter, being the next man in if either Dixon or Jaycee Horn had been hurt (the pair played basically the whole game). - Rock Hill Herald

Patterson also spoke on Oklahoma's young quarterback Spencer Rattler saying he has great skills and will be a great quarterback. Rattler follows in the footsteps of many Heisman candidates and winners at Oklahoma. Having Rattler as the leader of the Oklahoma offense has been something different for the Sooners as the quarterbacks they have had the last few seasons have been upper classmen. Patterson says, "He [Rattler] is no different than Max Duggan a year ago." Despite being a younger quarterback, Rattler has found a way to bring the same "it" factor as the past Sooner quarterbacks, and is still one of the leading scorers in the nation. - Dallas Morning News

  10/23/20 - Shi SmithrSr/2021, South Carolina, 5-10, 186 (DS#31 WR) + More +

The acrobatic catches were as common as the sight of him going face mask-to-face mask with a defender. South Carolina's Shi Smith showed every bit of his ferocious talent, and temper, during the Gamecocks' 30-22 win over Auburn on Saturday. Smith's receptions were dazzling. The near-constant jawing, the refusal to back down from trash-mouth engagement? Well, he wasn't penalized. And the Gamecocks won, so...No harm done? "I want a guy that's a competitive, composed football player," USC coach Will Muschamp said, emphasizing "composed" with a pause before and after. "He and I have this conversation a lot. When you're really composed, man, you're hard to deal with because you still have your competitive edge and you still have your competitive nature."

Muschamp made it clear he wasn't angry with Smith. He would love to have more Shi Smiths on his roster. But it is difficult to find the balance between a game-breaker and a game-changer, a star receiver third in the SEC and 10th in the country in receptions (34 catches, 347 yards, 3 touchdowns) and a surly headache whose unnecessary actions could swing momentum. The Gamecocks can't afford to have their best (and just about only) receiver hurt their chances of winning. "I got to keep my composure a little bit more. I've been working on it," Smith admitted. "It definitely takes you out your game. With the couple drops I had, they was in my head." - The Post and Courier
