Spencer Rattler threw a 45-yard touchdown to Marvin Mims and also ran for a score as No. 12 Oklahoma won its sixth consecutive Big 12 title, holding on to beat No. 8 Iowa State 27-21 in the conference championship game Saturday. That impressive title streak probably won't be enough to get the Sooners (8-2, No. 10 CFP) back in the College Football Playoff for the fourth year in a row, even when paired with their seven-game winning streak. Oklahoma lost at Iowa State on Oct. 3 and was 0-2 in Big 12 play for the first time since 1998.

Big 12 rushing leader Breece Hall ran for two touchdowns for the Cyclones (8-3, No. 6 CFP) in the second half, when Oklahoma punted on its first five drives before Gabe Brkic's 32-yard field goal with 2:01 left. The Sooners finally clinched the game when Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy was under pressure and threw his third interception, a fluttering pass picked off by Tre Brown inside the 10. The Sooners will play in a New Year's Six game, probably back at AT&T Stadium, after winning their fourth Big 12 championship in a row since the title game was reinstated - with four different starting quarterbacks. Rattler, who finished 22-of-34 passing for 272 yards and his 25th TD, is the first of those QBs who went to Oklahoma as a freshman instead of transferring into the program. - AP College Football

  12/10/20 - Shi SmithrSr/2021, South Carolina, 5-10, 186 (DS#31 WR) + More +

South Carolina wide receiver Shi Smith made his plans somewhat clear when he walked on senior day. Then his coach, Mike Bobo, shared his plans publicly. And Tuesday night, the Gamecocks senior said his goodbye. The Union County product could have come back for one season, owing to the NCAA's altered rule during the Coronavirus pandemic. But after four years in Columbia, Smith is moving on and declaring for the NFL draft. Smith worked his way back from a concussion to play his final college game on Saturday. He finished his career with 174 catches, 2,204 yards and 13 touchdowns. As a senior he often carried South Carolina's passing game, catching 57 passes for 633 yards and four scores. - Rock Hill Herald

South Carolina linebacker Ernest Jones is declaring for the NFL draft. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound junior from Waycross, Georgia has led the Gamecocks in tackles the last two seasons. He announced on social media Tuesday he was leaving South Carolina to enter the NFL draft. Jones is the third defensive starter in the past few weeks to move on to the NFL. Defensive backs Jaycee Horn and Israel Mukuamu both opted out of the final three games of the season after coach Will Muschamp was let go last month. South Carolina wrapped up its season with six straight defeats to finish 2-8. Jones had a team-high 97 tackles in 2019 and followed that up with 86 stops this season. - AP College Football

2020 DAVEY O'BRIEN AWARD SEMIFINALIST: Spencer Rattler, Oklahoma, Fr.,...Rattler is one of only two freshmen and one of three Big 12 quarterbacks among the 17 semifinalists for the Davey O'Brien Award. The redshirt freshman has completed 178 of 260 passes (69%) for 2,512 yards and 24 touchdowns, compiling a 174.7 passing efficiency rating. He has also rushed for four TDs. He has thrown for at least two touchdown passes in eight of nine games, has registered at least three TD passes in four contests and had four in the Missouri State, Kansas State and Oklahoma State outings.

Among freshman quarterbacks, the Phoenix, Ariz., product paces the country in passing touchdowns (24), passing offense (279.1 ypg), yards per pass attempt (9.7) and total offense (290.6 ypg). Among all players who have played more than three games this season, Rattler ranks eighth in passing TDs, 10th in yards per pass attempt, 12th in pass efficiency rating (174.7), 16th in yards per completion (14.1), 15th in completion percentage (68.5) and 18th in passing offense. - Oklahoma Football

Shane Beamer is returning to South Carolina, this time as head football coach. A source close to the search told The Associated Press on Saturday night that Beamer will be hired and take over the program run the past five seasons by Will Muschamp. Muschamp was let go last month with three games remaining in the season. The person spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because South Carolina has not yet made the hire officials. Beamer is the son of former Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer and served on the Gamecocks' staff from 2007-2010 under former coach Steve Spurrier. The younger Beamer has spent the past three seasons as assistant head coach and tight ends coach at Oklahoma. South Carolina finished a dismal 2-8 season with a 41-18 loss at Kentucky, the Gamecocks' sixth straight defeat. - AP College Football

  12/05/20 - *Kevin HarrisJr/2022, South Carolina, 5-10, 222 (DS#41 RB) + More +

Harris, a 5-foot-10, 225-pound running back out of Hinesville, Ga., might not be South Carolina's best NFL prospect, but he has been the team's most consistent all-around player. The sophomore has carried the football 164 times for 928 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Gamecocks, who are 2-7. He's averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Harris rushed for an eye-popping 243 yards and five touchdowns on 25 carries against Ole Miss. He ran for 126 yards at LSU, 171 yards at Vanderbilt and 100 at Florida. He's also caught 20 passes for 142 yards and another score.

"With Harris," said UK Coach Mark Stoops this week, "he's one of the top two-three-four backs in this conference and you know that is saying a lot. He is hard to get down. He runs exceptionally hard. They do a really good job blocking. I really respect the way they put a hat on a hat and run very physical. They block physically and he runs tough as well." Harris is 72 yards shy of becoming the ninth player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards. And he will have done it in 10 games. "I think it's a goal that is on our kids' minds, and not just Kevin," South Carolina interim head coach Mike Bobo said. "It's something that the offense takes pride in, especially the offensive line and the running backs. They know how close he is and what he's meant to this football team, offensively in the run game and the pass game." - Herald Leader

Harris is 72 yards away from reaching 1,000 for the season, something only eight other running backs in program history have done. He knows how close he is and how likely it is he'll be given numerous chances on Saturday as the Gamecocks finish the regular season at Kentucky. "Him getting 1,000, I think it's important to our guys, especially our offensive line and tight ends. They know where he's at," interim head coach Mike Bobo said. "He's into it, he'd rather us be winning ballgames, but we all know he's close to getting 1,000 and to do that in a 10-game schedule against all-SEC opponents, I think that'd be something meaningful that these guys can hang their hats on moving forward."

Harris would be the ninth Gamecock to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, something that has happened just 11 times (George Rogers, the school's greatest running back, thrice did it). But none of the others did it in only 10 games. Or against an all-SEC schedule. "That's one heck of a milestone, especially for a guy like Kevin, who's had a great year and is going to have a great game for us on Saturday," quarterback Luke Doty said. "We finish out, and get a win, and get him to 1,000 yards, that'd be awesome." - The Post and Courier

  12/02/20 - Shi SmithrSr/2021, South Carolina, 5-10, 186 (DS#31 WR) + More +

All South Carolina football seniors have the choice: Stay or go. The NCAA's COVID-19 ruling from the summer means every player gets an extra year of eligibility, leaving many seniors with the choice. Some gave a hint at what they're doing Saturday, choosing to walk in the senior day ceremony. But interim coach Mike Bobo gave a little more clarity on a pair of players who have started games and played prominent roles this season. No decisions are fully locked in, but players have hinted where they're leaning, notably No. 1 receiver Shi Smith.

"He's told me that he is moving on," Bobo said. "But things can change. You never know, who gets hired and what they're going to do, but I think his plans are to move on." Smith is in concussion protocol at the moment, and it remains to be seen if he'll be able to play this coming Saturday in the season finale at Kentucky. This season, he blossomed to become the top - and sometimes seemingly only - option in the receiver group. - Rock Hill Herald

  12/01/20 - *Kevin HarrisJr/2022, South Carolina, 5-10, 222 (DS#41 RB) + More +

The South Carolina running back has been the Gamecocks' breakout star in 2020. A 5-foot-10, 225-pound sophomore, Harris leads the SEC in rushing with 928 yards. The Hinesville, Ga., product will be a massive challenge for a Kentucky run defense that has been so-so (eighth in the SEC, surrendering 152.2 yards a game) at best in 2020. - Herald Leader

  11/25/20 - Shi SmithrSr/2021, South Carolina, 5-10, 186 (DS#31 WR) + More +

Whether it is Doty or Collin Hill at quarterback, they might not have Shi Smith to throw to against the Bulldogs. Smith left the game against Missouri with a concussion and didn't return. Bobo said Sunday night that Smith is in concussion protocol. If Smith can't go it will be a huge void for the Gamecocks. The former Union County standout. has 37 percent of the Gamecocks receptions and 38 percent of the team's receving yards. USC will need more from transfer Jalen Brooks, Josh Vann and Nick Muse in the passing game to pick up the slack for Smith. - Macon Telegraph

Cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Israel Mukuamu, the team's best NFL draft prospects, announced they are each opting out of the final three games to get a head start on their professional training. Safety R.J. Roderick is also opting out for what Bobo labeled "personal/COVID reasons." Horn was likely to leave after the season for the NFL anyway, and Mukuamu had that option as well, although a groin injury against Ole Miss had him doubtful to play the rest of this year. Their decisions along with Roderick to leave now with three games on the table seem to be the consequence of firing Muschamp in midseason, though Bobo wouldn't get into specifics.

"It's been a long year, it's a different year, when it's told to young kids, 'Hey, you don't have to play this year, you can opt out and it doesn't count,' it gives them a way out, in my opinion," said Bobo, who doesn't anticipate any more opt-outs before the year but cautioned that one never knows. "This isn't the only place where coaches are having issues with a long season and the ability to opt out. There's no hard feelings for anybody." - The Post and Courier

  11/21/20 - *Jaycee HornJr/2021, South Carolina, 6-1, 205 (DS#2 CB) + More +

The post-Will Muschamp Era fallout has begun, and the first entry is a big one. Jaycee Horn, arguably South Carolina's best defensive player, is opting out of the rest of the season so he can prepare for the NFL draft. The son of former NFL receiver Joe Horn, Jaycee Horn has raised his stock this season and become a potential first-round pick. He was named National Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 18 after intercepting two passes and deflecting another pass that became a third interception in a 30-22 win over Auburn. Horn has 16 tackles this year, one for loss, and the two picks among six pass breakups. While those two interceptions are the only takeaways of his career, he's had sparse opportunities since teams won't throw to his side of the field. It's unclear if Muschamp being fired had anything to do with Horn's decision, but whatever the reason, the Gamecocks will play their final three games without him. They're looking destitute at corner after Israel Mukuamu, one of Horn's closest friends, re-injured his groin in last week's loss at Mississippi and is expected to be out for a while. - The Post and Courier

South Carolina has lost another starting cornerback in Israel Mukuamu after he opted out of the season, joining his defensive backfield partner Jaycee Horn in preparing for the upcoming NFL draft. Interim coach Mike Bobo said Tuesday four players have opted out since the school dismissed coach Will Muschamp on Sunday. Joining Mukwamu and Horn are safety R.J. Roderick and defensive lineman Makius Scott. The Gamecocks (2-5) face Missouri (2-3) on Saturday night. Mukuamu is a 6-foot-4, 205 pound junior who was an all-Southeastern Conference second-team selection in 2019. He and Horn shared the team lead with two interceptions each. Horn announced his decision to opt out Monday. Bobo, the first-year offensive coordinator, was named to take over for Muschamp. Bobo said that defensive line starters Aaron Sterling and Brad Johnson are out for the year with injuries. - AP College Football
