Bryan Harsin enters his second season as the Auburn football coach with a vital decision to make at the most critical position on his squad. TJ Finley, Texas A&M transfer Zac Calzada, Oregon transfer Robby Ashford, and freshman Holden Geriner are vying to be the Tigers starting quarter when the season begins in less than four months with a game against Mercer at Jordan-Hare. Finley has the most experience at Auburn and took most of the first-team reps in the media viewing periods and during the first half of the A-Day game. Ashford won the MVP of the spring game and showed elite speed with a nice arm. Calzada didn't get to participate fully since he's recovering from a shoulder injury to his non-throwing arm. - Birmingham News

Fifteen practices, including a scrimmage open to the public, and umpteen meetings spliced with individual skill work. Such is the college football spring season, AKA the appetizer that's never enough to sate the taste that will linger for the next four months. South Carolina's Garnet & Black Spring Game ended on April 16 and intact were the same feelings as before it. The spotlight was on starting quarterback Spencer Rattler and he did well. Not flawless, not horrendous, not flashy, just well. He was 8-of-10 for 79 yards and made some plays with his legs, rushing six times for 29 yards (but a net of minus-17 due to taking four sacks).

It wasn't Rattler's fault his protection was leaky but he showed the awareness of when it was coming, and an ability to get rid of the ball. That was also a nod to offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield, who mostly kept one receiver close by Rattler just in case he needed a bailout. "We made some plays, for sure. Obviously, we wanted to have more explosives. We connected on some quick-gain stuff," Rattler said. "That defense has been seeing all of our plays the whole spring so they're going to have an idea of what we're doing, but we still got to execute, no matter what." Nothing against what last year's rotation of QBs and what they had to go through, but Rattler stabilizes the position. Everything offensively flows from there. - The Post and Courier

Sherrod Greene was on his way to becoming a star linebacker at South Carolina. Injuries knocked that path off course the past two years. In 2020, Greene fractured his hip in the season opener against Tennessee and missed the rest of the year. In 2021, the North Carolina native suffered a right ankle injury on the second play of the Sept. 18 game against Georgia and was lost for the season. Rather than calling it a career or possibly entering the NFL Draft, Greene announced in December that he would be back at USC for a sixth season. "Got so much left to give!! I'm not done yet," Greene said in a Twitter post two days before Christmas. Greene opened up this spring about how hard the struggles the past two years have been.

He credited those in his inner circle for keeping his spirits up during a challenging portion of his career. "It was tough because the year before that I broke my hip," Greene said. "Just having back-to-back season-ending injuries could take a toll on me, but I had good support in my corner with my family, and my mom kept my head on straight. So it wasn't as bad as it may seem, but it was a good trial for me." The Gamecocks coaching staff brought Greene along slowly this spring and monitored him, and they'll do the same in the fall so he can be ready to play each week. - Rock Hill Herald

For the first time since South Carolina shook the college football world with the signing of transfer quarterback Spencer Rattler, head coach Shane Beamer was able to speak publicly on the move. Speaking with College Sports Today on ESPNU Radio on Wednesday afternoon, Beamer shared the excitement of landing Rattler, a transfer QB from Oklahoma, along with Sooners tight end Austin Stogner. Beamer got to know Rattler while he was an assistant coach on Lincoln Riley's Oklahoma staff. "I think it's huge," Beamer said. "I know it's huge. One, because of the kind of player he is. I was around him at Oklahoma. I know what kind of player he is and what kind of person he is, and I'm excited about adding him to our roster. But then just his name and the reputation he has and the excitement and buzz it generated for South Carolina football was amazing." Rattler and Stogner both announced their commitments to the Gamecocks late Monday night before officially signing financial aid agreements on Tuesday night - the eve of college football's early signing period.

Beamer said the news of Rattler's signing energized the team's recruits. "The news comes out a couple nights ago ... and immediately the amount of recruits that were texting me about it, normally it's me communicating with them through text and FaceTime - but they're hitting me up about their excitement that Spencer Rattler is coming here," Beamer said. "I think it makes a great statement about what this program's about. Spencer could've gone anywhere in the country and chose to come here for his 2022 season of football." - Rock Hill Herald

South Carolina's bowl roster picture is getting clearer. All-SEC defensive lineman Kingsley "JJ" Enagbare announced on Monday that he is forgoing his remaining eligibility to enter the NFL Draft. Enagbare's projections are wide-ranging, but he's been slotted as high as a first round pick depending on the outlet. "I'm thankful to Coach Muschamp and his staff for recruiting me, believing in me and giving me the opportunity to play at South Carolina," he wrote in a Twitter announcement. "I am also grateful for the opportunity to play under Coach Beamer and the new staff. To all the coaches, trainers and support staff who encouraged me and pushed me throughout the years, I thank you." Enagbare is the latest in a long line of productive defensive line prospects to come out of South Carolina in recent years. He finished his 2021 campaign with 41 tackles, five tackles for a loss, and 2.5 sacks. - Rock Hill Herald

South Carolina defensive end Kingsley Enagbare is heading to the NFL and starting quarterback Jason Brown is entering the transfer portal. Enagbare and Brown announced their decisions on Twitter on Wednesday. Enagbare is a 6-foot-4, 265 pound lineman who had 41 tackles with 2.5 sacks this season. He is not expected to play for the Gamecocks in the Duke's Mayo Bowl against North Carolina on Dec. 30. Enagbare thanked his coaches, past and present, teammates and fans "for the memories and being part of my journey." Brown is a first-year quarterback who started the last four games for South Carolina, leading the Gamecocks to a 40-17 win against Florida and a 21-17 victory over Auburn. Brown's move comes two days after Oklahoma transfer Spencer Rattler, who began this season as a top Heisman Trophy contender, said he was joining the Gamecocks. - AP College Football
