Diego Guajardo kicked a 44-yard field goal as time expired to lift South Alabama to a 22-19 win over Bowling Green on Saturday. Terrion Avery scored on a 13-yard run with 1:39 remaining to get the Jaguars (2-0) a 19-all tie and then Quentin Wilfawn recovered a fumble at the Bowling Green 33 that led to the winning kick. Avery's TD run was made possible by Jake Bentley's 20-yard pass to Caullin Lacy on fourth-and-8 with three minutes remaining.

South Alabama took its first lead on Kareem Walker's 1-yard run in the third quarter but the Falcons grabbed it back at 19-12 on Matt McDonald's 33-yard scoring pass to Andrew Bench and a two-point conversion. Bowling Green (0-2), which had only 9 rushing yards, still led most of the way. A blocked punt out of the end zone for a safety and Jake Bentley's 27-yard pick-6 gave the Falcons a 8-0 lead after the first quarter. Guajardo kicked a pair of field goals in the second quarter to get the Jaguars within 8-6 at halftime. South Alabama had 11 more first downs and outrushed Bowling Green 114-9 though the Eagles had a 308-257 edge in passing yards. - South Alabama/AP College Football

Jake Bentley threw two touchdown passes and new head coach Kane Wommack didn't have to wait long to get his first victory as South Alabama spotted Southern Mississippi an early lead before scoring 31 straight points in a season-opening 31-7 win over the Golden Eagles on Saturday. Trey Lowe's 1-yard TD run gave Southern Miss a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. Bentley knotted the score at 7 early in the second quarter with a scoring strike to Trent Tyre and gave the Jaguars the lead for good when he connected with Kareem Walker less than two minutes later. Davyn Flenord capped the scoring for South Alabama with a pick-6 with 44 seconds left in the game. Bentley completed 10 of 12 passes for 138 yards. Jalen Tolbert had three catches for 84 yards.   Toledo returned two blocked punts for touchdowns and the Rockets breezed to a 49-10 victory over FCS-member Norfolk State in a season opener on Saturday. Toledo led 7-0 with 6:50 left in the first quarter when DeMeer Blankumsee blocked a Ryan Richter punt that was scooped up by Maxen Hook and returned 25 yards for a TD. The Spartans answered with a nine-play 75-yard drive that culminated with Juwan Carter's 47-yard scoring strike to Justin Smith to make it 14-7. But lightning struck again when Maxen blocked a punt that was scooped up by Justin Clark and returned 13 yards for a score.

Dequan Finn added a 24-yard TD run with 27 seconds left before halftime to make it 28-7. Carter Bradley completed 8 of 11 passes for 183 yards and a TD - an 84-yard strike to Devin Maddox - for the Rockets. Finn finished with 82 yards on nine carries. Bryant Koback ran nine times for 52 yards and two scores. Carter completed 8 of 18 passes for 125 yards with an interception for the Spartans. Toledo piled up 441 yards of offense and held Norfolk State to 272. The Rockets were penalized 12 times for 140 yards. - Toledo/AP College Football

Toledo has its quarterback. Rockets coach Jason Candle announced Monday that fourth-year sophomore Carter Bradley will start against Norfolk State on Saturday at the Glass Bowl. "Carter Bradley will start at quarterback Saturday night," Candle said. "You will see some Dequan Finn also Saturday night. Carter's had a very good camp. I think Dequan has had a very good camp, as well. Both guys deserve to play, and that's how we will approach it. "But I don't think in Carter's case or DQ's case that this is an ongoing competition, and I don't think if you make a bad play that you need to look over your shoulder that you're going to come out of the football game on the next snap. Both of them bring a little bit something different to the table, and that's how we will approach this first game." Bradley has started three games for the Rockets, completing 58 of 120 pass attempts for 708 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. During the shortened 2020 season, he threw for a career-high 432 yards against Central Michigan, the most by a Mid-American Conference QB all year, and ranked third in the conference in passing efficiency (164.1). - Toledo Blade

How does first-year defensive coordinator Charlton Warren improve an IU defense that ranked top-15 nationally in forced turnovers and sacks per game? The answer is an increased emphasis on creating pressure or "havoc" in the opposing backfield without blitzing, allowing the back seven to play tighter coverage for shorter periods of time. IU defensive line coach Kevin Peoples said the defense keeps tracks of every havoc play (sack, tackle for loss, forced fumble, pass breakup, interception) during practice and names a havoc leader at the end of each day. Through five days of fall practice, redshirt sophomore defensive tackle C.J. Person and the defensive line have been consistently disruptive up front.

At 6-3 and 292 pounds, Person added lean muscle during the offseason while maintaining his strength and increasing his explosiveness off the line of scrimmage. His ability to win his matchups up front and generate pressure will be key for the Hoosiers. "C.J. Person has really stepped up, (we're) pleased with him," Peoples said. "C.J.'s always been a talent. I mean he's been twitchy, he's got a little extra athleticism, a little twitch. ... He did some really good things for us last year, but it started with him in the spring and then all through the summer. He had a tremendous summer. "He changed his body... He's done an unbelievable job of really taking coach (Aaron) Wellman's leadership in the weight room, and then changing the things that he needs to change." - Indianapolis Star/News

South Alabama held its fourth preseason football practice on Monday morning at the Jaguar Training Center, and several newcomers are beginning to make their presence known. Chief among those is offensive lineman Ja'Chai Baker, who took virtually every rep during 11-on-11 team drills as the first-team left tackle. An all-conference pick on the FCS level at Southeast Missouri last season, the 6-foot-6, 310-pound Baker (whose first name is pronounced "Juh-KYE") hasn't yet won a job outright, head coach Kane Wommack said, but has made excellent progress through the first week of camp. "We're starting to make some moves on the offensive line," Wommack said. "Obviously we've brought some of these transfer guys in here and we need to see them working with different people. Some of the guys that were here in the spring, certainly they're going to have a little bit more experience in terms of what we're doing and the communication level. I want to see kind of how they interact with different people, but I thought Ja'Chai has been doing a good job. And so he deserves some (first-team) reps." - Birmingham News

South Alabama's offensive and defensive depth charts remain largely stable from the spring, with one exception. Linebacker Jamal Brooks, a fifth-year senior who transferred in from Missouri over the summer, saw time with the first and second defensive units during 11-on-11 team drills on the first two days of preseason camp. Though the Jaguars aren't doing any contact work just yet, Brooks has managed to bat down a few passes that have come his way.

Brooks, a former Bessemer City High School standout, totaled 41 tackles in 46 career games at Missouri. He has proven himself to be both a vocal leader and a playmaker during the first two days of camp, head coach Wommack said Saturday. "I'm really impressed with Jamal," Wommack said. "Communication is so important, and that was one thing we talk about every single day in our defense - relentlessly loud communication. It exudes confidence with everybody else on the field. That's with your team, but it's also intimidating for our opponent. And Jamal is so loud when he gets on that field. And he's also really instinctive; he got his hands on a couple of balls today. We've got to come up with some interceptions off of that." - Birmingham News

South Alabama looks reasonably well-set at quarterback with Utah transfer Jake Bentley and at wide receiver, with Jalen Tolbert leading a deep and talented group. It's a different situation at running back, where Carlos Davis - the Jaguars' leading rusher in 2020 - is off the team following an offseason arrest. None of the four remaining backs - AJ Phillips, Terrion Avery, Jared Wilson and Tank Miller - looked particularly explosive during the spring. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Walker, a former highly-touted Michigan recruit who barely saw the field at Mississippi State last season, could give South Alabama the type of power back it hasn't had in recent memory. - Birmingham News

South Alabama has landed another Division I football transfer for 2021, as former Texas A&M linebacker Ke'Shun Brown has joined the Jaguars' program, a source confirmed to AL.com on Sunday. Brown, a former Carver-Montgomery standout, will have four seasons of eligibility at South Alabama. He is expected to enroll in school this week and participate in fall camp, which begins Friday.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Brown was a four-star recruit in the 2019 signing class, but has not seen game action in two seasons at Texas A&M. He redshirted as a true freshmen, then initially opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID concerns before returning late in the fall. Brown went through spring practice at Texas A&M, but was not expected to contend for a starting job this fall. He entered the NCAA transfer portal in May. Brown is the 12th Division I transfer to join the South Alabama program since head coach Kane Wommack took over in December. - Birmingham News

South Alabama has added another Division I transfer to its roster for 2021, with the commitment of former TCU safety Atanza Vongor. Vongor, a native of Grand Prairie, Texas, will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Jaguars. He originally committed to transfer to Colorado in May before re-entering the transfer portal a month later. The 6-foot-1, 208-pound Vongor was a four-star recruit and a Top 200 national prospect in TCU's 2018 signing class, but a knee injury kept him off the field as a true freshman. He played in 11 games for the Horned Frogs in 2019 and five in 2020 (totaling two tackles in two seasons) before leaving the program at the end of the beginning of the spring semester. - Birmingham News

South Alabama is picked to finish third in the Sun Belt Conference West Division in 2021, according to voting by league coaches released Tuesday. The Jaguars received 27 poll points, putting them behind Louisiana (49) and Arkansas State (38) and ahead of Texas State (25) and ULM (11). The Ragin' Cajuns received 9 of 10 first-place votes, with the Red Wolves getting the other. Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State tied atop the East Division projections with 44 points, though the Chanticleers received six first-place votes to four for the Mountaineers. Georgia State (24), Georgia Southern (20) and Troy (18) round out the projected division standings.

Preseason all-conference teams were also announced Tuesday, with wide receiver Jalen Tolbert the only South Alabama representative on the first team. Tolbert, a junior from Mobile, is the leading returning receiver in the Sun Belt after catching 64 passes for 1,085 yards and eight touchdowns in 2020.   South Alabama recently added its 11th Division I football transfer for 2021, former Arkansas-Pine Bluff defensive back Shawn Steele. Steele played four years for the Golden Lions, and will have one season of eligibility with the Jaguars due to a blanket waiver passed by the NCAA amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He announced he was committed to South Alabama on June 25. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Steele was UAPB's third-leading tackler during the 2021, season totaling 28 stops along with four pass breakups and an interception. The Golden Lions played just five games after their season was moved to the spring due to COVID, finishing 4-1 and losing to Alabama A&M in the SWAC championship game. An Arlington, Texas, native, Steele totaled 180 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 23 pass breakups and six interceptions during his career at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He has played primarily cornerback during his college career, but could also add depth for South Alabama at safety. - Birmingham News

South Alabama added its third former SEC skill-position player of the offseason on Saturday. Former Mississippi State running back Kareem Walker announced he will play his final college season with the Jaguars. Walker (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) appeared in two games the last two seasons with the Bulldogs after a year in junior college and two years at Michigan. Originally from Irvington, N.J., Walker was a three-star recruit in Michigan's 2016 signing class. He redshirted as a true freshman, then rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries in five games for the Wolverines in 2017.

Walker spent the 2018 season at Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College, rushing for 207 yards and a touchdown in seven games. He sat out the 2019 season at Mississippi State for academic reasons, then played in two games (with no carries) last season before leaving the team and entering the NCAA transfer portal in early November. Walker has already graduated from Mississippi State, so he will be immediately eligible at South Alabama even though he is a second-time transfer. - Birmingham News

South Alabama has added a transfer commitment from former Kentucky wide receiver Allen Dailey. Dailey, a Pinson Valley High School graduate, will have two seasons of eligibility with the Jaguars beginning in 2021. He announced his decision to transfer via Instagram late Sunday. The 6-foot-3, 208-pound Dailey played in 37 games in three seasons at Kentucky, totaling 23 receptions for 252 yards and two touchdowns. He will be reunited in Mobile with South Alabama wide receivers coach Michael Smith, who helped recruit him to Lexington in 2018. Dailey was a three-star prospect in the 2018 class, according to 247 Sports. He was a first-team Class 6A All-State pick as a senior at Pinson Valley, catching 80 passes for 1,441 yards and 23 touchdowns for an Indians team that went 15-0 and won the state championship with current Auburn quarterback Bo Nix under center. - Birmingham News
