Lucky Sutton rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown, Tano Letuli had a pick-6, and San Diego State shut out Fresno State 23-0 on Saturday. While the Aztecs (6-1, 3-0 Mountain West) offense mustered 124 yards through the air, Sutton led a combined 208-yard ground attack and scored the offense's only touchdown of the day on a 1-yard run late in the first quarter. Sutton's rush of 46 yards and Byron Cardwell's 54-yard reception were the only plays of more than 16 yards in the game. The Bulldogs' offense didn't have a single play of at least 15 yards.

Gabriel Plascencia made three field goals, including a 50-yarder for the Aztecs. Fresno State (5-3, 2-2) netted 227 yards of total offense, and Letuli outscored the unit singlehandedly when he intercepted Carson Conklin midway through the fourth quarter and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown. It was Conklin's second interception of the day. Conklin was 20-of-42 passing for 182 yards. Dalesean Staley led the Aztecs defense with seven tackles, a pair of pass breakups and a split tackle for a loss. August Salvati had the other interception. - San Diego State/AP College Football

Jayden Denegal was 14-of-17 passing for 205 yards and two touchdowns, Chris Johnson returned an interception 40 yards for a score, and San Diego State beat Nevada 44-10 on Saturday night for the Aztecs' fourth straight win. Nevada (1-5, 0-2 Mountain West Conference) has lost 13 straight in conference play and 11 in a row versus FBS opponents. Nevada went three-and-out on the game's opening drive and Jordan Napier - who finished with five receptions for 110 yards - returned the ensuing punt 75 yards for a touchdown just 59 seconds into the game. Johnson's pick-6 gave the Aztecs (5-1, 2-0) a 14-0 lead with 7:11 left in the first quarter.

Denegal threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Christian Washington on the first play of the second quarter and a 31-yard scoring strike to Jacob Bostick with 9:05 left in the first half before Lucky Sutton ran for a 3-yard TD that made it 35-0 with 1:46 to go in the first half. Gabriel Plascencia made field goals of 21, 45 and 49 yards in the third quarter. The senior is 10 of 10 this season and has made 22 straight, dating to last season, the longest active streak in Division I. San Diego State's Brady Anderson was ejected with a little more than four minutes to play for a hitting a defenseless player after a hit on sliding quarterback Carter Jones. Joe McFadden kicked a 34-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter and Jones threw a 16-yard TD pass to Marshaun Brown with 2:32 to play. Jones, a true freshman who made his first career start, was 16-of-32 passing for 177 yards with two interceptions. - San Diego State/AP College Football

Jayden Denegal threw two touchdown passes, Byron Caldwell Jr. and Lucky Sutton both rushed for over 100 yards and combined for three scores and San Diego State beat Colorado State 45-24 in a Mountain West Conference opener Friday night. Denegal fired a 45-yard scoring strike to Donovan Brown and San Diego State (4-1, 1-0) led 7-0 after one quarter. Christian Washington scored on a 2-yard run for a 14-0 lead early in the second. Colorado State (1-4, 0-1) halved the deficit on Jackson Brousseau's 49-yard touchdown pass to Armani Winfield on a flea flicker, but Denegal connected with Jordan Napier for a 42-yard touchdown on the ensuing possession and the Aztecs led 21-7. Denegal hit Napier for a 61-yard gain and Sutton ran 14 yards for a touchdown on the next play for a 28-10 lead at halftime.

Gabriel Plascencia kicked a 53-yard field goal and Sutton scored on a 1-yard run for a 38-10 advantage after three quarters. Plascencia is 7 for 7 on field goals and has made 19 straight dating to last season. Denegal finished with 256 yards on 13-for-16 passing. Napier had seven receptions for 153 yards. Cardwell had a 20-yard TD run in the fourth quarter and finished with 129 yards on 15 carries. Sutton rushed 21 times for 113. Brousseau completed 13 of 25 for 155 yards. He had a 4-yard touchdown run in the final quarter. Jalen Dupree carried 16 times for 103 yards. Darius Curry had a 12-yard touchdown pass to fellow freshman Kory Hall on the final play and finished 5 for 5 for 51 yards in his first game. The Aztecs averaged 316 yards of offense through their first four games but had 313 by halftime against the Rams and finished with 540. - San Diego State/AP College Football

Gabe Plascencia kicked a 25-yard field goal as time expired to give San Diego State a 6-3 over Northern Illinois on Saturday. Plascencia's winning kick came after a strong rush resulted in a short punt by Northern Illinois (1-3) to the Aztecs 44 with 1:44 remaining. Five Lucky Sutton rushes, a facemask penalty and an offsides after an NIU sub couldn't get on the field on time set up Plascencia for the game-winner. Plascencia has kicked 17 consecutive field goals, the second-best active streak in the FBS behind BYU's Will Ferrin. The senior has made 22 of 23 in his career. Both team's first drives, both over seven minutes, resulted in field goals but then the game became a defensive struggle.

The Aztecs (3-1) outgained the Huskies 266-179 with NIU passing for just 57 yards. The teams combined to go 9 of 30 on third down and 2 of 5 on fourth. There were 13 punts. Sutton rushed for 88 yards on 17 carries. Jayden Denegal was 13-of-20 passing for 110 yards. Owen Chambliss had 11 tackles, seven solo, and Chris Johnson six solo to lead the Aztecs defense, which blanked Cal 34-0 last week and Stony Brook 42-0 in SDSU's opener. In between came a 36-13 loss at Washington State. Andrew Glass kicked a 31-yard field goal for NIU's only points. Telly Johnson Jr. had 53 yards rushing on 16 carries. Quinn Urwiler had 16 tackles, 10 solo, and Filip Maciorowski 13 tackles, five solo. - San Diego State/AP College Football

Chris Johnson returned an interception 97 yards for a touchdown and Dwayne McDougle had a 35-yard fumble return for a score as San Diego State stunned previously undefeated California 34--0 on Saturday night. Jayden Denegal hit Jordan Napier on a 6-yard touchdown pass two plays after they hooked up on an 80-yard completion for the Aztecs (2-1), who rebounded two weeks after being routed 36-13 at future Pac-12 opponent Washington State. Cal dropped to 3-1. Johnson stepped in front of Jaiven Plummer to intercept true freshman Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and then raced down the right sideline for a 27-0 lead late in the third quarter. Two drives earlier, SDSU's Dalesean Staley knocked the ball loose from Kendrick Raphael and McDougle scooped it up and ran in untouched.

Staley intercepted Sagapolutele late in the third quarter. "That's a good team that played well on a good night," coach Sean Lewis said of his Aztecs. "I'm really proud of them. Lot of great emotional toughness they've showed in the past 14 days to respond to coaching, to respond to situations and to respond to an incredible opportunity that they had tonight that they really capitalized on against a really good football team. We're a good team." On first-and-20 from the SDSU 10-yard line early in the second quarter, Denegal hit Napier at the 50 and the wideout ran to the Cal 10 before being dragged down. Two plays later, Denegal made a nifty short toss to Napier, who then followed 338-pound pulling lineman Joe Borjon into the end zone. Gabe Plascencia kicked field goals of 34 and 41 yards. Napier had nine catches for 154 yards and Lucky Sutton scored on a 3-yard run. - San Diego State/AP College Football

It was the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Sutton ran for 100 yards on 22 carries. He ran it in from the 1 to start the scoring with 5:30 left in the first quarter and from the 2 to make it 28-0 with 1:40 left in the third.

After Sutton's opening score, Denegal threw a 25-yard touchdown Jacob Bostick with 37 seconds left in the first for a two-touchdown lead.   Marquez Cooper ran for 223 yards and two second-half touchdowns to lead San Diego State to a 45-14 win over Texas A&M-Commerce in a season-opener on Saturday night. Gabriel Plascencia connected on a 50-yard field goal to give the Aztecs a 3-0 lead after one but the Lions grabbed the lead when EJ Oakmon bulled over from the 1 to make it 6-3. Cooper took over in the second half, vaulting San Diego State into the lead with a 47-yard touchdown romp in the third quarter.

Tano Letuli recovered a fumble in the end zone and Louis Brown IV pulled in a 44-yard pass from Danny O'Neil for three touchdowns in a six-minute span of the third quarter. Cooper added a seven-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter and O'Neil capped the scoring with an eight-yard TD pass to Jordan Napier. In between those two scores JD Coffey III added a 45-yard pick-six. O'Neil completed 22 of 33 passes for 214 yards without an interception and Brown caught three passes for 91 yards. Texas A&M-Commerce managed just 117 yards passing, with Eric Rodriguez completing 14 of 20 passes for 105 yards for a touchdown and the pick-six. The Lions' ground game was held to just 63 yards on 34 carries. - AP College Football

Jalen Mayden took great satisfaction last year in quickly and successfully moving midseason from safety to starting quarterback for San Diego State. But what sticks with Mayden, and fuels him during offseason workouts, is the way the season concluded for the Aztecs. "Definitely the finish," Mayden said. "I feel like I didn't do my part." He guided SDSU to wins in five of six games after replacing Braxton Burmeister as the starting QB, but the Aztecs suffered a 13-3 loss to Air Force in the regular season finale and a 25-23 loss to Middle Tennessee in the Hawaii Bowl.

SDSU was averaging 65.6 passing yards a game and ranked 131st - last - in the FBS in passing when Mayden took over. Mayden (141-for-237, 2,030 yards, 12 TDs/10 INTs) completed 59.5 percent of his passes while averaging 253.8 yards a game, third in the Mountain West and 32nd in the nation. But he also had at least one interception in each of the last six games, including three picks in the bowl loss. "I really take that to heart," Mayden said. "It's me throwing three interceptions - balls that didn't even get a chance to touch the receivers' hands - or I made the wrong read...I'm most disappointed in myself and how I played those last two or three games." - San Diego Union Tribune

San Diego State has received its third Division I transfer commitment in the new year - this one from former Texas safety JD Coffey III. And Coffey's commitment came just in time to enroll in the spring semester. Classes began on Wednesday. The 6-foot junior, who announced his commitment this week on social media, played six games each of the past two seasons for the Longhorns. He has two years of eligibility.

Coffey had limited playing time in Texas, totaling 11 tackles over two years. Five of the tackles came in one game - a win last September over Louisiana-Monroe. He entered the transfer portal Nov. 29 after slipping to third at one juncture on the Longhorns' depth chart. Coffey was highly-regarded two years ago coming out of Texas' Kennedale High, the same school that produced former SDSU running back Juwan Washington. A consensus four-star prospect, Coffey was rated the No. 7 safety by 247Sports.com in the 2021 recruiting class. - San Diego Union Tribune

San Diego State picked up some help for its depleted defensive line when Oklahoma State senior transfer Samuela Tuihalamaka indicated late Friday night on social media he has signed with SDSU. Tuihalamaka needed only two days to find a landing spot after entering the NCAA transfer portal on Wednesday. He is among more than a dozen Cowboys players to enter the portal. Tuihalamaka did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The 6-foot-1, 304-pound Tuihalamaka is a "super senior," afforded one more year to play by virtue of the "COVID year" granted to players in 2020 by the NCAA.

The Aztecs lost their three super senior starters - defensive ends Keshawn Banks and Jonah Tavai and defensive tackle Justus Tavai - following the 2022 season. While there are several backups eager to step into starting roles, SDSU was expected to scour the portal for experienced assistance. That's where Tuihalamaka enters the picture. He played all 13 games this season in a backup role at Oklahoma State, totaling 23 tackles, with one sack among four tackles for loss, on a Cowboys team that went 7-6. He had two tackles in Oklahoma State's 24-17 loss to Wisconsin in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. - San Diego Union Tribune

  12/29/22 - Jesse MatthewsSr/2023, San Diego State, 5-11, 189 (DS#61 WR) + More +

San Diego State wide receiver Jesse Matthews told the Union-Tribune on Monday that he will not be back for the Aztecs next season, and he is declaring for the 2023 NFL Draft. Matthews could have returned for a sixth season at SDSU, using his "COVID year" of eligbility, but he believes "it's the time in my life where I just need to move onto the next chapter." Matthews, who graduated earlier this month with a communications degree, has been invited to the Hula Bowl, which is Jan. 9 in Orlando, Fla. His focus thereafter will be preparing for SDSU's Pro Day and other workouts leading up to the draft, which is April 27–29 in Kansas City, Mo. "I feel like coming back wouldn't improve my stock," Matthews said.

"I'm 23 years old, so I'm not really a young prospect. I'm kind of in the older category. "Another year of college football would just put more wear and tear on my body. There's no guarantee I would be injury-free throughout the next season, and I feel like I wouldn't really grow much more if I were to come back to college football. "I feel like, not that I've reached my ceiling in college football, but I've accomplished what I've needed to accomplish at San Diego State." Matthews' father, Tom Matthews, is a certified agent, and the family has gathered information from scouts and coaches in recent weeks and months to assess Jesse's professional prospects. At this point, he grades out as a sixth-round pick. A strong Pro Day - especially if he puts up a good 40 time - could move him up a round or two in the draft. - San Diego Union Tribune

San Diego State linebacker Michael Shawcroft, who battled through injuries to become a leader on the SDSU defense, announced on social media that Saturday's EasyPost Hawaii Bowl will be his last game. "Playing football has been my life since I was 5 years old," Shawcroft posted online Wednesday night. "I've had so many great memories and made friendships that will last a lifetime. "Unfortunately, I have to listen to my body and decide what is best for me and my future. With that being said, I've decided that the bowl game will be the last football game I ever play. "Thank you San Diego State for giving a hometown kid a chance to play in front of his friends and family. I'm forever grateful." Shawcroft, a senior from Helix High, said last month that he needed some time to decide whether to return for one more season and use his "COVID year" of eligibility.

"That's something I've been praying about, I'm going to think about," Shawcroft said at the time, adding, "It's just something that I need to listen to my body. I've had a lot of things happen to me here. "I need to talk to trainers, talk to coaches and really decide what's best for me in the next step of my life." He decided the Christmas Eve game against Middle Tennessee will be it for football. Shawcroft has been a leader both on and off the field for the Aztecs. He was a second-team all-Mountain West selection this season. At SDSU's team banquet two weeks ago, Shawcroft was recognized with the President's Award for High Achievement. It is given to the player "who has achieved the highest standards of athletic and academic excellence." - San Diego Union Tribune
