  09/11/21 - Jordan YatesrSr/2025, Sam Houston, 5-11, 195 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Geoff Collins believes the resiliency demonstrated by his Georgia Tech players shows "we're leaps and bounds from where we were." Collins also knows a more telling test awaits next week when the Yellow Jackets visit No. 6 Clemson. Fill-in starter Jordan Yates passed for four touchdowns and Georgia Tech contained Kennesaw State's triple-option offense to beat the Owls 45-17 on Saturday. "To come out and play at a high level in every area of the game is pretty cool," Collins said. With the bounce-back win from last week's stunning loss to Northern Illinois, Georgia Tech (1-1) gained momentum for its Atlantic Coast Conference opener at Clemson next week.

The performances by Yates and Kyric McGowan, who had two touchdown catches, are evidence of improved depth from back-to-back three-win seasons. Yates became the first quarterback in Georgia Tech history to throw for four touchdowns in his first start. The redshirt freshman completed 17 of 22 passes for 254 yards as the replacement starter for Jeff Sims, who was in uniform but held out with a left arm injury. Yates gave credit to his offensive line. "I'm really proud of my guys out there," Yates said. "They kept me upright all game up front." - Georgia Tech/AP College Football

Eric Schmid threw for three touchdowns and defending FCS champion Sam Houston beat Northern Arizona 42-16 Thursday night. Leading 21-7 at halftime, the top-ranked Bearkats broke the game open with the help of two third-quarter interceptions. Luis Aguilar's 30-yard field goal got the Lumberjacks within 21-10 in the third quarter and they were driving again before Trevor Williams intercepted Jeff Widener and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown. Ysidro Mascorro then intercepted Widener on NAU's next possession and the Bearkats turned that into another score on Noah Smith's 7-yard run. Ramon Jefferson went over 100 yards rushing and Cody Chrest over 100 yards receiving for the Bearkats. This past spring, Schmid passed for 20 touchdowns and ran for eight more in leading Sam Houston to the Bearkats' first national championship, finishing 10-0. - Sam Houston/AP College Football

  08/31/21 - Dezmon JacksonrSr/2023, Sam Houston, 5-11, 214 (DS#60 RB) + More +

Dezmon Jackson is a gamer. That phrase can mean a lot of different things these days, but here's what it means in regard to the Oklahoma State running back. "I don't say this a lot, but he actually plays better in games than he practices," OSU coach Mike Gundy said. "Now, he practices hard, but in games, he slashes and seems to be more productive than he actually is in live settings in practice. "There's very few young men that I've come across in my career that were actually able to do that." That's a little bit of an unfortunate trait, considering how much time football players spend practicing, compared to playing games.

However, opening week is here, and Jackson is sure to get some game action on Saturday when the Cowboys host Missouri State at 6 p.m. at Boone Pickens Stadium, televised by ESPN+. "I've always referred to myself as not really a practice guy," said Jackson, a 5-foot-11, 220-pound redshirt senior. "I don't know why, but when I'm in practice, it don't really click to me, but when I get on the field in games, it's just so easy. "I think it's just my adrenaline going, knowing it's game day. Playing with my teammates, playing in front of fans and just doing something I love. It's something that gets me going." - Daily Oklahoman

  05/16/21 - Jequez EzzardrSr/2022, Sam Houston, 5-09, 193 (DS#32 WR) + More +

Eric Schmid threw for three touchdowns, including a 10-yarder to Ife Adeyi with 16 seconds left, and Sam Houston wrapped the longest and most unusual college football season with its first FCS national title, beating top-seeded South Dakota State 23-21 on a rain-drenched Sunday. Jequez Ezzard caught two touchdowns for No. 2 seed Sam Houston (10-0). He also had a 5-yard catch on fourth-and-3 to extend the final 16-play, 65-yard drive, after Schmid converted an earlier fourth-and-1 with a 9-yard run. South Dakota State (8-2) went ahead 21-17 on Isaiah Davis' third TD run, an 85-yarder with 5:41 left. Davis, who finished with 178 yards rushing on 14 carries, went down the sideline in front of the Jackrabbits bench, eluding half of the defense before breaking free to the end zone. Sam Houston coach K.C. Keeler got his record 24th FCS playoff victory, and became the first coach to win FCS titles at multiple schools.   05/08/21 - Jequez EzzardrSr/2022, Sam Houston, 5-09, 193 (DS#32 WR) + More +

Jequez Ezzard's catch-and-run for a touchdown and punt return for a score were among two of three touchdowns Sam Houston State scored in the last 2 1/2 minutes of the third quarter en route to a 38-35 comeback win against James Madison on Saturday. Second-seeded Sam Houston State (9-0) advances to the FCS title game to face No. 1-seed South Dakota State (8-1) on Sunday in Frisco, Texas. The Jackrabbits dismantled Delaware 33-3 earlier Saturday. It's the Bearkats' first trip to the title game since losing in 2012 to North Dakota State.

James Madison led 24-3 at halftime and were up 27-10 with three minutes left in the third before Ezzard struck. Eric Schmid threw a slant to Ezzard who caught the ball about 14 yards into his route and he took it the rest of the way for a 69-yard touchdown reducing the deficit to 27-17. After forcing James Madison to three-and-out, Ezzard ran back a punt 80 yards to cut the lead to three. Zyon McCollum then picked off Cole Johnson after his pass bounced off the hands of his intended receiver on the Dukes' first play of the drive. Schmid ran it in from 20 yards out as time expired to end the third quarter for a 31-27 Sam Houston State lead it never gave back. Ezzard finished with 107 yards receiving on four receptions. - AP College/Sam Houston State Football
